Scottish origins. Everything's got Scottish origins these days. Well, all the whisky in the ads hoping people'll down litres of the stuff for hogmanay, that is. Except the Irish ones - for the inferior 'whiskey' - of which there are a handful still hanging around but not worth bothering with of course.
Scottish origins, hell, everything wants to have Scottish origins at this time of year. Shortbread and scones - that's scones that rhyme with 'swans', and not 'stones', bloody Sassenachs - tartan 'skirts' in Marks and Sparks - for the ladies, of course - real Scots men wear kilts with nought underneath and if you call it a skirt he'll likely floor ye. The Loch Ness monster. Sean Connery for crying out loud.
Scottish origins, I've got Scottish origins, for Ed's sake. Born, if not bred in Edinburgh, fair city, me. Never worn a kilt, like shortbread, don't like whisky except with coke and coffee - there's more than one who would question my claim to being flavour of the end of the month at this time of year.
Whatever, the origins are there and I don't think I've ever let someone saying 'Oh, you're English' get away with it, despite my RP accent and southern upbringing.
The Scots and the French supposedly get on like an English cottage on fire, as do the Irish and the Welsh - we've all been at war with the English at sometime in the past, after all.
Which begs the question: who actually does like the English? Even I can't say I'm a big fan, although try telling me that Faulty Towers and The Office aren't the best thing since sliced lamb and mint sauce and I'll floor ye. Oops, that's my wee Scottish origins showing through again.
It’s Work From Home Day! That means, it’s going to be a “slow day” for pictures. Heck, not everyday’s going to have a masterpiece.
So today, I present to you…
The origins of gearheadedness.
Before the DSLR(s), I just had to have the latest phones. These are the ones that survived over the years.
7650 – first ever camera phone!
N70 – best all around phone ever!
N93 – because Gary Oldman looked so cool taking videos with it and I thought it beat lugging around my handycam.
P990i – from p800 to p900 to p910i to p990i..i thought I would get them all. P1000 was a joke. No more Sony Ericsson for me.
iPhone 3G – coz Globe gave it to me. Now I’m using it for Sun. Ironic. Somebody kill it already.
E71 – the iphone and the Pxxx series spoiled me. Just gotta have the QWERTY keyboard
E52 – I love Nokia! Mostly everything I would ever need in a phone. Plus the fact that that the battery last three times as long as the iPhone.
In Memoriam:
Motorola something – back when I didn’t have a landline in Manila and text messaging didn’t exist. 300 pesos would last me 1 day for calls. 15 pesos per minute!
Forgotten Nokia Phone – the one Neo used in the Matrix. I just used to call it the Banana Phone.
6150 – 18k brand new! 2 player Snake via infrared!
Communicator series – the 9110 and another model I forget. Dropped both accidentally and both split in half.
3310 – when you just gotta text and don’t have any money to buy a better phone. Interchangeable cases!
Nokia 6630 – the one that looked like a spaceship
Nokia 6680 – because I didn’t want to have a phone that looked like a spaceship.
Nokia 6230i– Dad liked it, borrowed it, and kept it.
Dopod – Dad liked it, borrowed it, kept it too.
I should start a museum.

The origins of Sutton and Sons date back to 1998, when Danny Sutton opened a fishmongers (formerly âThe Fishery') on Stoke Newington high street. Things must have worked out rather well as, in 2010, Danny and his wife Hana decided to open a fish and chip restaurant just up the road. As you can probably imagine, this is no ordinary fish and chip shop and, although they're much beloved for their traditional takeaway, this place is more a (small) fish restaurant that puts some emphasis on takeaway fish and chips and traditional British food. After all, when was the last time you saw a chippie doing an offer on half a dozen oysters and a bottle of prosecco? Or an actual wine menu at a chippie? Yes indeed! I didnât get a trad fish and chips but the portion sizes looked immense if what anyone else was eating was anything to go by.
Sutton & Sonâs non piscine offerings include traditional english fare like steak and kidney pie, and the atmosphere is very much that of your local chip shop, though I guess with a few âcontemporaryâ touches. That said, there are the obvious nods to the traditional chippie such as tiled walls and one of those things at the counter where you can watch freshly made fish under those oddly coloured heat lamps that keep the food warm. Whilst Danny oversees the running of the business, Hana produced a range of desserts and pickles for the restaurant. There's a chalkboard which shows (presumably) what she has created on the day. We had her vanilla cheesecake, which was absolutely and exactly what a cheesecake should be :3
It's not just the desserts that change regularly. Asides from the regular a-la carte, the 'Catch of the Day' - which, as far as I can tell, the stuff they got in earlier in the day from the fishmonger side of the business. On the day this included quite a few delicious fishes but we tried mackerel (for me) and a pint of prawns (yeah, by the pint! for my friend). What we got was representative of a good fish restaurant - unpretentious and good quality seafood, prepared simply. Nothing particularly mindblowing, but at the level of quality you would expect, fresh from a fishmonger. Another thing worth mentioning is that they have definitely got the recipe for chips right. As you probably know, a lot of the time, when a fishmonger fries a wedge of potato, the result can be quiteâ¦limp and oily. Not so here - the chips are just just delicious crispy and lightly salted. And, lest we forget: deep fried Mars Bars are also a thing, and also on the menu.
If youâre interested in putting these guys to the test for yourself, thereâs now two more Sutton & Sons restaurants - one in Islington, and one in Shoreditchâs Boxpark (which I assume is more temporary). Iâll sum this up with the thoughts of âChris bâ, a TripAdvisor commentator: â...there has been such a decline in fish and chip shops, and many today are kebab and chicken places with perhaps an old bit of fried fish lying about. But not so here.â. Also can we make takeaway mackerel a thing? I would love to live in a world where takeaway mackerel was a thing...

The Bassoon has its origins in the 17th century, and took its moderrn form in the 19th century. It is a double reed instrument like the Oboe, and able to play in the tenor and bass registers. The instrument folds over on itself with the top or bell higher than the player’s mouth.
These instrumentss were made in London. The one on the left was made around 1930 by Hawkes & Sons, and the one on the right in 1935 by Boosey & Hawkes (after the merger with Boosey & Company). The former is a Buffet (or French) system Bassoon and the latter a Heckel (or German) system one. The systems differ in the size of the bore, the fingering system, the shape of the bell, the type of reed used and the quality of sound. The Heckel system has become the dominant one around the world including the UK.
Bassoons are assigned the number 422.112-71 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
4 = Aerophones. Sound is primarily produced by vibrating air. The instrument itself does not vibrate, and there are no vibrating strings or membranes.
42 = Non-free aerophones. The vibrating air is contained within the instrument.
422 = Reed Instruments. The player's breath is directed against a lamella or pair of lamellae which periodically interrupt the airflow and cause the air to be set in motion.
422.1 = Double reed instruments or Oboes. There are two lamellae which beat against one another.
422.11 = Single Oboes [as opposed to sets of Oboes].
422.112 = With conical bore.
422.112-71 = With Keys.

The origin of the Fune Hoko (Fune means "a ship" or "a boat") is a story from Chronicles of Japan: Empress Jingu crossed the sea to conquer the Shilla Kingdom on the Korean Peninsula. The figure of Empress Jingu, stored inside the houseboat-shaped float, wears a mask, a crown, a long-sleeved jacket in dark blue and golden silk, a pair of intricately decorated scarlet pants and dignified scarlet amour. The Empress gave birth to the 15th Emperor of Ohjin. Following the Empress's example, the deity figure wears the bleached white clothes around its body, which are given away as maternity girdles for easy deliveries after the procession. The current hoko float was designed during the Hohreki Era (1751-1764) and was completed during the Tempo Era (1830-1843). The head of the boat is crowned by Geki, a legendary phoenix bird. The Geki is 1.3 meters in height and 2.7 meters in wingspan.

During its 400 year history, Kennedy Quay and its associated docklands have been the seat of commerce and trade for the City of Cork however the area has been in decline for many years.
Kennedy Quay still operates commercially and has a number of interesting features including a number of old buildings but there has been a lot of demolition work in the area since I first visited ten years ago.
One of the key landowners in Cork Docklands, Origin Enterprises owns close to thirty acres of land on Cork’s south docks and demolition has taken place of their silos on Kennedy Quay by the R&H Hall building. Origin Enterprises, a subsidiary of convenience food group IAWS, has recently submitted a plan for a major retail and residential development of the docklands area of Cork.
In March the Government announced that three major housing developments in Cork City will benefit from combined State support of €25.89 million through the Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Fund (LIHAF). According to the press release - “The new funding will catalyse the development of three sites: a 600 unit suburban greenfield site at the Old Whitechurch Road; the former “Atlantic Quarter” site on the former Ford Depot site on Centre Park Road; and the R & H Hall site on Kennedy Quay.”

-Oree Original
Pueblo Nuevo presents, ORIGIN, the first solo exhibit by Oree Original (aka Daniel Jimenez). This new series of paintings are intensely bright, kaleidoscope-like puzzles that evoke pre-Columbian iconography remixed with Oree's personal mythology of our universe. Triangles, circles, squares and lines are used to construct complicated hypnotic patterns which form larger entities. Different combinations of these basic shapes, coupled with the vibrating relationships of solid colors give Oree's creations a seemingly infinite life with endless possibilities of their origins.
Born and raised in East Los Angeles, Oree moved to the Bay Area to begin an internship with Pueblo Nuevo and continue building on a career as a self taught visual artist. Currently residing in Berkeley, Oree has gained quite a reputation on dance floors of nightclubs and house parties all over the Bay. Only being kicked out of a handful of venues, he continues to steal hearts with his impeccable flowing locks.
