Laura Keene (July 20, 1826 – November 4, 1873) was a British stage actress and manager. In her twenty-year career, she became known as the first powerful female manager in New York.
In 1858, Our American Cousin debuted in Laura Keene's Theater. It was her company that was playing at Ford's Theatre, Washington, on the night of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Keene entered the presidential box at Ford's Theatre after the President was shot by John Wilkes Booth, and cradled the wounded President's head in her lap.
Born Mary Frances Moss in Winchester, England, Keene was a niece of the British actress Elizabeth Yates. Her parents were Jane Moss and Tomas King. In 1844, she married Henry Wellington Taylor, by whom she had two children, Emma Elija and Clara Stella, before her husband abandoned the family. Her second husband was John Lutz.
Keene made her professional debut on October 8, 1851, starring in Romeo and Juliet at the Theatre Royal in Richmond (near London). This was followed by performances at London's Royal Olympic Theatre and Royal Lyceum Theatre, including several months working under Madame Vestris. After less than a year performing in Britain, Keene accepted an offer from James William Wallack to go to New York City, and serve as the leading lady in the stock company at his successful theater.
She enjoyed great popularity during her time at Wallack's Theatre (September 20, 1852, through November 22, 1853). In order to have greater control over her career, she then entered into theater management. Keene leased the Charles Street Theater, in Baltimore, from December 24, 1853, to March 2, 1854, where she acted as manager, director and performer . This was followed by touring performances in California (April 6 through July 29, 1854), in Australia (October 23, 1854 through January 1855), and again in California (April 9 through October 4, 1855).
Upon returning to New York City, Keene leased the Metropolitan Theatre, remodeled it, renamed it Laura Keene’s Varieties, and served as manager, director and star performer from December 23, 1855 through June 21, 1856. She planned to continue at this location, but a rival theater owner, William Burton, purchased the building, and moved his own operation there. (It was renamed Burton’s New Theatre, and then the Winter Garden.) At this point, she lined up investors, along with an architect who specialized in theaters, and a new theater was constructed to her specifications. Named Laura Keene’s Theatre, it opened on November 18, 1856. Keene exercised complete control, managing, directing, and starring at this theater for seven seasons, through May 8, 1863.
After deciding to give up her own theater, Keene continued as manager and star of a company which toured the United States for most of the next ten years. She also served as manager of the Chestnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, from September 20, 1869, through March 25, 1870.
Her final performance was on July 4, 1873, while touring in northern Pennsylvania. Keene died of tuberculosis at the age of 47 at Montclair, New Jersey
Her stage name of “Laura Keene” was taken about 8 Oct 1851, probably to hide fact that her husband became a convicted felon serving a life sentence in a penal colony in Australia. She became an actress as a way of supporting her daughters and decided that starting anew in America was the best for herself and for her family.
She traveled to Australia with the actor Edwin Booth in an attempt to secretly locate John Taylor and get the marriage dissolved. She was unsuccessful in locating John Taylor and returned to the U.S. via of Hawaii. She then met John Lutz, a businessman from Washington, D.C. whose prominent family included a grandfather who had served with George Washington as a captain in the Revolution. Lutz became her business manager and was often represented as her husband – although he himself was married and had a daughter.
Records exist to show that nearly all the personnel at Ford’s Theatre at the time of Lincoln's assassination (actors, stage hands, musicians, etc.) were arrested and questioned. John T. Ford himself was thrown in jail. The public suspected that the actors were complicit in the assassination and there were threats to burn down the theatre because of what had happened there. The theatre was under heavy military guard and the actors were not permitted to remove their possessions (including costumes).
The assassin’s brother Junius Booth, was finishing an engagement in Cincinnati the night of the assassination. Junius was arrested and held by authorities until it could be proven that he had nothing to do with his brother’s action.
Laura Keene had been on the same playbill in the past with John Wilkes Booth and some say she had been intimately involved with his brother Edwin Booth during the Australian tour when Laura was trying to find her husband. Edwin Booth, who was performing in Boston at the time of the assassination, was also arrested and it took special interference from Gen. Adam Badeau, a close friend and confidante of both Edwin Booth and Gen. Ulysses Grant to prove Edwin’s loyalty and secure his release.
Perhaps as part of the “re-building” of Laura Keene‘s reputation, a story began to surface that she had entered the presidential box, got down on the floor and cradled Lincoln’s head in her dress. This story was enhanced by the marketing of bloody swatches of what was said to be parts of the dress she wore that evening – and by the much-later “recollections” of eyewitnesses.
Historians have never explained why she was allowed to leave Washington when she was such a key witness in the identification of the assassin. If she had actually entered the presidential box as the legend states there would have been more reason to detain her as she would have been part of the efforts to save Lincoln’s life. There is no testimony on record from her although it is possible that she was informally questioned or formally questioned and the details have been lost. Laura Keene never made any statements regarding her own presence in the presidential box, regarding placing Lincoln’s head in her lap, and regarding her costume being covered with blood.
A few photos from Battery Park and one on the way to South Street. A few hundred perhaps with disparate signs on Fracking, Stopping mother earth's slavery, wall street as well as Keystone XL. A dozen or so police with nothing to do, no loudspeakers, a mild pleasant group smaller than the boatloads of tourists to see the statue of liberty. A lovely day [better than predicted] umbrellas hammered into parasols. No sign of the demonstration/march on any news program I saw. All in all: amiable, unfocused and weak.

St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2017 population of 308,626 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois (after Chicago), and the 22nd-largest in the United States.
Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.
The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Its metro area is home to major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina and Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri are located within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. One of the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

The Grove is a business district located along Manchester Avenue (Missouri Route 100) between Kingshighway Boulevard and Vandeventer Avenue in the Forest Park Southeast (FPSE) neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Formerly known as the Manchester Strip, the retail drag was first developed in the late 19th century to serve the working-class population of Forest Park Southeast. Today, the Grove is home to a variety of restaurants, bars, and clubs, including a significant number of LGBT-oriented establishments. The district is supported by a community improvement district (CID), created in 2009, which levies an additional sales tax on businesses within its boundaries to fund infrastructure and branding services.
The Grove is within walking distance of the Washington University Medical Center, Forest Park, and the Central West End and Cortex MetroLink light rail stations.

Nuevo revés a los fumadores: ley antitabaco y ahora aumento.
El tabaco no sólo es nocivo, adictivo y perjudicial para la salud, también es molesto para la gente que rodea a un fumador. Llegar a casa apestando
a tabaco tras una noche de fiesta o ver un delicioso plato de comida estropeado por el cigarrillo que fuman en la mesa de al lado, son situaciones que
parecen estar cerca de evitarse en los próximos meses. ¿será esto posible?

Welcome back Class of 1978 Ames Senior High School !!
Ames High School class of 1978 40-year post reunion summary
The 40th reunion was so fun !! The class of 1978 is quickly becoming one of the most connected classes out of all the Alumni classes at AHS, as approximately 102 1978 classmates met and re-connected on Friday Sep 28 2018 at North Cyde restaurant in North Ames, Iowa.
Saturday, September 29 we all toured the High School then 100+ classmates met again later that day at the American Legion on Main street for a banquet, group photos, a short program and then another wonderfully enchanted evening of re-connecting with old friends. It was so much fun to see classmates we had not seen for so long, in some cases not since AHS days 40 years ago. We all have journeyed 40 years to get back together again. Ever so special to have friends that span most, if not all of your life, especially after 40 plus years. Then we shed a tear and said our goodbyes and we hope to see you again soon, maybe in 5 years.

Las Vegas, colloquially referred to as Vegas, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada and the seat of Clark County. The Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area is the largest within the greater Mojave Desert, and second-largest in the Southwestern United States. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife, with most venues centered on downtown Las Vegas and more to the Las Vegas Strip just outside city limits. The Las Vegas Valley as a whole serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had 641,903 residents in 2020, with a metropolitan population of 2,227,053, making it the 25th-most populous city in the United States.
The city bills itself as the Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its luxurious and extremely large casino-hotels. With over 40.8 million visitors annually as of 2023, Las Vegas is one of the most visited cities in the United States. It is a top-three U.S. destination for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment has earned it the nickname "Sin City", and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, commercials and music videos.
Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, it was the most populated North American city founded within that century (a similar distinction was earned by Chicago in the 19th century). Population growth has accelerated since the 1960s and into the 21st century, and between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled, increasing by 85.2%. As with most major metropolitan areas, the name of the primary city ("Las Vegas" in this case) is often used to describe areas beyond official city limits. In the case of Las Vegas, this especially applies to the areas on and near the Strip, which are actually in the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester.

Hello, My name is Paul, I'm actually named after the late greatest actor of our generation... Paul Walker. I was rescued from the street in front of my foster's home where I was in danger of being hit by multiple cars. People tell me that I'm between a year or two old, but I am very much still a puppy and am very excitable. My coat is mostly a very even brown that has a few areas on my head and chest of white. I'm about 50 pounds, but I will probably gain a little weight as I was very underweight when originally found. My ears have been cropped by my previous owner and I have amber colored eyes. I enjoy eating anything really and I can be very food motivated, I haven't really been eating anything special, but I love any treats that come my way. I am extremely friendly to everyone I've met, other dogs, people, I'm just excited to have any kind of attention. I have a ton of energy when my owner comes home, but I settle down and like to relax during the evening by laying in my kennel and chewing on a bone. My perfect day would start with a morning walk around the neighborhood, I love to do anything athletic to get my energy out, so hiking, running, playing in the park... anything you want to do. I love going for rides in the car, so we can go anywhere you want, I just love fresh air. After getting my energy out, I'm very content sitting next to the couch and chewing on any of my toys, my favorite toys are the toughest ones and bones. Right now, I've been working on learning a few tricks and I've mastered sit and shake, I'm currently working on lay down and stay. I haven't had a lot of training, but I am extremely patient and I am very eager to please. I can't really think of anything that scares me (we haven't had any thunderstorms lately, so I can't remember if they bother me or not). When I see something in the yard from the window, I'll bark, but I'm not scared. As far as cats go, I'm very curious about them and I have tried to get one to play on occasion, but if they aren't interested I tend to give them some space. Instead of playing with the cat, I always play with my other dog friends (I have one at home and very routinely play with others). We get along great, and one of my favorite things to do is play tug-of-war with my roommate. As far as where I'd like to live, I can't say it really matters... wherever I can get the attention and exercise I enjoy, I'll be happy. When I was rescued from the street, I was very under weight and my health was suffering. Since then, my vet has given me excellent care and my foster has helped me gain enough weight to regain my health. I currently do not have any health issues and I have been living at my foster home for about a month. I live with my foster dad, his dog, and his roommate. I'm close to my foster dad, but I also love hanging out with his roommate. When I am home alone, I stay in a crate in the living room where I like to relax and chew on my toys. In the evenings I'll also relax in my crate since it's very comfortable, but when it's time for bed I usually sleep at the foot of my fosters bed where I am well behaved through the night and wouldn't dream of waking anyone up in the middle of the night(or too early in the morning). I really enjoy my foster home because I get a lot of attention, my fosters make sure that I'm always part of any activity. They make sure that while I'm involved, it's also a learning experience and I appreciate everything they've done for me(especially the getting me off the street part). Before my foster let me in his home, I was just wandering the neighborhood. Before that, I honestly can't remember what happened, but I appreciate all the help people have given me to help me get on my feet. Now I just need a loving home to call my own.

The Carolina Spritsail Skiff is a traditional boat, historically built on on Harker's Island, North Carolina, on the Outer Banks. The lines were taken for the boat by M.B. Alford in July of 1976 from a boat built in 1911 then owned by Dr R. Borden and now in the Traditional Small Craft collection at the Hampton Mariners Museum in Beaufort NC. The Museum's file number for the plans is #135.
In the mid-1960's, Julian Guthrie, a well-known traditional boatbuilder on Harker's Island built a skiff for the new boat's owner, which the owner used and enjoyed for nearly ten years before selling. The boat never left his mind, however, and he finally decided to have us build him a new one to plans obtained from the Hampton Mariners Museum.

We were fortunate to be able to work with the owner, who not only gave us the commission but the plans and a series of photographs of the original boat built for him in the mid-1960's.
This Carolina Spritsail Skiff is being built by students in the 2014 Traditional Small Craft class under the direction of Master Instructor Jeff Hammond. The plans will be followed exactly, with several slight modifications determined through the owner's previous experience (no sheet holes in the blocking aft, for example) will be incorporated. Provisions will also be made for a small outboard engine to provide enough "iron wind" to push the boat along when windless conditions are encountered in the summer on the Puget Sound.
The sails and rigging will be made by master sailmaker Sean Rankins of Northwest Sails, which is co-located with the School.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located in Port Hadlock WA and is an accredited, non-profit vocational school. You can find us on the web at www.nwboatschool.org, on Facebook, SmugMug, and of course, on Flickr.
Our mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of both traditional and contemporary wooden boatbuilding and maritime crafts.
We build both commissioned and speculative boats while teaching students boatbuilding the skills they need to work in the marine trades. We sell our boats to help support the School. Give us a call should you like to discuss our building a boat for you.
You can reach us via e-mail at info@nwboatschool.org or by calling us at 360-385-4948.
