Toad Lane Museum, Rochdale 1980s Co-operative Union booklet

Closed January 2007 upon withdrawal of Co-op Group from Non-Food Stores

“With the slender funds contributed by the promoters, he [Rev George Fox] and Mr Clark purchased the stock-in-trade for furnishing the store, which was opened on March 23rd 1877”.

[From “The History of Park Lane Chapel By George Fox, Late Minister of The Chapel. With Thirty-Four Illustrations” (Manchester: H Rawson & Co, New Brown St.1897)]

Seen here awaiting demolition early in 1973, the Central Stores originally comprised a green grocer's, butcher's, grocer's and draper's departments as well as a large meeting room for official business and social functions. The 1909 edition of Seed's Wigan & District Directory describes the business as “cloggers etc”. In 1920 the Ashton in Makerfield UDC's Buildings, Highways & Streets Committee approved an application by the Co-operative Society for “alterations to premises at Bryn, to form a fish and fruit shop” (Wigan Archives ref. UD Ash/A/A1/44).

Managers included Howorth Greenwood (1881), Nathaniel Wright (1892), Joseph Corcoran (1910?), Fred Cobley (1925) and John Marsden (1960?).

Opened 1981 by CRS Barnsley.

Subsequently CWS,

Street art is a strong part of urban life and the urban experience. I especially love places like this, where artist and styles gather and create an evolving collage.
