The distribution of profits to members based on the value of purchases they had made from the society's shops and not solely on the amount of capital they had invested distinguished many of the early co-operatives from other businesses existing at that time. Purchases would be recorded in ledgers and a proportional payment made back to the customer at the end of the relevant accounting period. For many families, this payment -the dividend or “divi”, as it was known- covered expensive one-off purchases such as items of furniture or clothing at a time when few people had any other means or ability to save money. The practice also encouraged the repeat custom that was vital to the growth of co-operative societies in their early years.
As the volume of trade increased some co-operative societies began to issue dividends in the form of trading stamps, a practice which was adopted nationally in 1969.
