Travel Destination :: Bali Indonesia

My first genuine encounter with Balinese culture was in the small village of Tampaksiring called Penempaham. I was the only foreigner in the Temple that day and was warmly welcomed by the villagers. I had no idea what was happening but a young Balinese boy quickly befriended me and explained all that was taking place.

It was on this day I began to wrap my head around the genuine dedication the Balinese have to their beliefs, as well as the strong sense of community. This was also the day my love for Bali grew immensely. If you are looking for a rich cultural adventure and travel destination you will not forget, add Bali to your list of top places to visit.

These are a few things I learned while in the small Balinese village:

In Bali, there is no single day without a ceremony. It is an obligation for the Balinese to promote balance relations among human, gods and nature. Those principles are materialized through a sacrifice called Yadnya. Yadnya can be a very simple thing like giving a slice of one's food to a wandering dog or cleaning up rubbish in a temple area. Yadnya, or giving away, is the root of most ceremonies in Bali.

There are five obligations or Panca Yadnya. Dewa Yadnya is for thanking the God, Pitra Yadnya to respect the ancestor's souls. Manusa Yadnya is for cleaning human souls. Rsi Yadnya is held when someone wants to be a priest and Bhuta Yadnya is for thanking nature and balancing positive and negative powers.

Travel (should) bring the unexpected to your senses, your perspectives and everything you know about life and what you know. Sometimes travel experiences and the people you meet along the way can turn your world upside down.

You might see a sacrifice at a Bali Temple or during Eid al-Adha in Muslim countries. It's also possible to be invited to dinner in someone's home and be served unidentifiable treats. There is also a possibility you'll be in a place with no running water or indoor plumbing; perhaps there is no toilet in the restroom. Your mind might be challenged well beyond what you consider "normal."

All of the above and more have happened while I've travelled around the world. In the western world, it's doubtful you'll experience anything but what you are accustomed to at home. When you step into developing countries, be ready for almost anything.

Travel with me will always lead you to expect the unexpected. I love change, challenging what I know, testing my limits and being amongst the unfamiliar. The parts I love about travel are often uncomfortable for others. Go with the flow, whatever happens, happens. There is a general timetable yet no strict itinerary or agenda.

Experience. Simply experience where you are and who you're with. Love every bit of life while you are doing whatever it is you're doing. Scare yourself and learn you are braver than you ever thought you could be.

After taking some online classes to find out the secrets to better photos, I've decided to play with some negative space, and some other things that I should be more directly conscious of. This is where this, and others that will follow come from. Thanks for looking and liking! I shoot raw, using a Nikon D3400, and edit in Lightroom (occasionally Photoshop).

During the day, London seems short to me. Have you noticed? Maybe the grey skies make the city look like your short plump uncle or aunt. I can't quite put my finger on why I feel this way. But, on a clear day when the skies are ocean blue, I'm still underwhelmed by the majestic city that melds together and doesn't look so grand.

Don't get me wrong. I love London at any time during a twenty-four hour period, and even 363 days a year. I reserve two days to loathe the city, especially when I need to walk Oxford Street.

There is an infectious energy in the capital city, no doubt. London is busiest during the day. Hordes of people casually mill about or rush from here to there. Some people are wandering tourists who can sometimes be annoying; others are quasi-Londoners who feverishly commute in and out of the city for work. Then there are the actual residents who take the city in stride and at their own pace. Did you know London's population swells nearly 60% during the day and decreases after working hours? It's true. It's also true since the financial crisis, people's patience waned and gentle manners fell by the wayside. There is stress and it shows.

I remember years ago walking out onto the street only to get a whiff of diesel fumes. The pungent aroma was unmistakable and most noticeable after I'd been away from the capital for an extended period of time. I often felt like PigPen from the Peanuts cartoon as if there was a cloud constantly hovering around me.

A view from the airplane window will reveal a red dust covering a rustic city that makes you wonder if you've made the right travel choice. The City of London is the historic heart of London. This area was already a bustling trading post almost 2000 years ago when it was part of the Roman Empire. Many of the irregular streets still follow the ancient Roman roads. The boundaries of the City also loosely follow the path of the Roman wall that was built here in the 2nd century AD.

Today the City is a mostly commercial district dominated by the stately buildings and skyscrapers that house offices for the finance industry. There are however plenty historical landmarks that were built in an era when the City was still densely populated. The star here is the majestic St. Paul's Cathedral, but there are also noteworthy civil structures such as the Guildhall and the Leadenhall Market. And the Museum of London, which is appropriately located in the oldest part of London, documents the tumultuous history of the city.

Because of its rich history, winding streets and plethora of historical landmarks, The City, or Square Mile, nears the top of the best places to photograph London. You could spend an entire day (or night) in the area. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and plan to explore the area with your camera.

For visitors, this is the place to descend upon or meet your friends. It is a familiar place with much activity throughout the day and night. For Londoners, Piccadilly Circus is an area to avoid.

The layout of Piccadilly has changed drastically over the years as the city becomes more pedestrian friendly. The vibe remains as vibrant as ever between the flashing lights of the advert board, never-ending traffic and loud voices between bits of laughter.

After a serious look and a quick think, there isn't much in Piccadilly Circus except a statue that was once a fountain and a massive advertising sign. Piccadilly is the gateway to Theatreland and Soho. It is also is a gate to Leicester Square. There really isn't much more to the area except Piccadilly Circus is a point where hoards of tourists congregate. I would suggest that today it is a grand meeting point, an overcrowded place to have your lunch and appear in a hundred photographs all at once. A place to revel in the excitement and bewilderment of tourists just passing through on their way to somewhere, anywhere else.

Often I will be out with my camera into the wee hours or awake in the wee hours. During these way off-peak hours, Piccadilly Circus is deserted. Seeing a moving car is even rare. The lights still flash as if to entertain the crowds though there is no one to be entertained. This is a definite must stop if you looking for a good place to photograph London.
