By far, White Sands is my most favourite place in America. It's so surreal to be amongst the vast white dunes of gypsum sand. More than this, I hear each breath, footsteps mean something and White Sands is entirely peaceful. I've walked, hiked and slid down the massive dunes tho' the biggest thrill came when an Air Force pilot strapped me in his plane, took the door off and allowed me to literally hang out to photograph the landscape below. It might be said that these white sand dunes touch my soul.

"I warn you to leave, this is the last warning!" I get up off my knees and walk over to the man who's been staring down at me with a fierce expression. "How many times do I have to tell you that we're not interested in whatever it is your selling?" The man doesn't answer but clenches his jaw tight as he turns on his heels. He floats out of the room without saying another word before slamming the door shut behind him, leaving me alone in this spooky place with all these strange spirits floating around me. I take a deep breath and try not think about what just happened or how they might be watching my every move or moving around me now even more quickly than they were before.

Digital Photo Magazine interviewed me about photographing Istanbul. What a treat to visit Istanbul, but to photograph this great city, too? Wow. Istanbul offers photo opportunities wherever you turn.

What was it about Istanbul that made you want to capture it on camera?

The Ottoman architecture of Istanbul, it’s minarets reaching to the heavens, the colourful spice market, Grand Bazaar presented a vivid image in my mind. Hypothetically, I had been photographing Istanbul even before I arrived. I had seen a myriad of photos while researching my trip and visualized how I would capture the various scenes differently. Once my feet hit the pavement, it seemed as if I had already visited the city, making my task of capturing the city on camera all the more easy. Additionally, having grown up in Tripoli, Libya, re-discovering the Islamic world has been high on my list. Istanbul has been only one stop with regard to this journey.

Istanbul is famous for its beautiful Ottoman architecture, such as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and so on; artistically, do you think you did it justice?

Ottoman architecture is brilliant, isn’t it? The style completely captures my imagination, and there is a fairytale magical element I’ve not seen elsewhere. My eye is drawn towards curves, and lines, so Istanbul was ideal for me as a photographer. Hour upon hour I studied Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque), Süleymaniye Mosque, Basilica Cistern following each curve and line.

The Ben Youssef Madrasa is the largest Medrasa in Morocco. It was an Islamic college in Marrakesh, Morocco, named after the Almoravid sultan Ali ibn Yusuf (reigned 1106–1142), who expanded the city and its influence considerably.

The carvings contain no representation of humans or animals as required by Islam, and consist entirely of inscriptions and geometric patterns such as star and petal designs in zellige tilework.

Arriving at Ben Youssef Madrasa, you might feel slight disappointment as the entrance is dark and narrow. The big production awaits as you turn the corner into the main part of the building. An explosion of intricate tile patterns in blue, aqua, amber, white, black and burnt orange combined with complex wood carvings titillate the senses. A rectangle shallow pool of aqua water unexpectedly softens the geometric patterns. The aesthetics are exquisite.

I never tire of visiting Ben Youssef Madrasa and must admit to paying closer attention to detail when exploring this wonder with film photography. Instead of capturing digital images in an instant, I took time to scrutinize the lines, patterns, textures and angles with a film camera.

Take your time and take it all in. There is no rush in Marrakech just as there is no scramble when using analogue.

The medersa centres around a large courtyard with a central pool for ablutions. The buildings are covered in an abundance of decoration: carved cedarwood, exquisite stuccowork, and colourful zellij tiles.

This article about "Sí El Paso" first appeared in The El Paso Times 05 January 2020 issue. The article is written by Maria Cortez Gonzalez.

In his worldwide travels, El Paso photographer Mark Paulda is often asked where is he from.

When he replies El Paso, the second question is usually "why El Paso?"

Paulda, who is super proud of his city, wants people to know what El Paso is about. And the best way for him to answer is through a pictorial.

Through TCU Press, he has recently released "Sí El Paso," a look of El Paso and its people through photographs. The book comes out 10 years after his first photographic book of the city, which was a best-seller for the Fort Worth-based publisher.

"The first book, 'Celebrating El Paso' had City Hall on the cover so once the building was raised, it made the book outdated," Paulda said. Not to mention, there are no more copies available of the book.

Paulda said the city has changed a lot in 10 years, especially in development Downtown.

"The Mills Building has been renovated and brought back to life and has a whole different character," he said as an example

So he was happy to take another look and photograph key areas of El Paso including buildings designed by architect Henry C. Trost, the missions, around the University of Texas at El Paso and Fort Bliss as well as people and cultural activities.

Paulda said El Pasoans are always proud of their city, whether they live here or are away.

Mark Paulda, accomplished photographer and wandering wayfarer, doesn’t just showcase scenery in El Paso 120; he makes a powerful statement: “El Paso is not at the edge but instead at the very center of some remarkably amazing landscape.” Paulda subverts the notion that El Paso is merely a desert city in the middle of nowhere by taking his audience on journeys to striking destinations within a 120-mile radius of the border city.

Alongside photographs of mountainous locales like the Hueco Tanks, Paulda includes photos of such variety that some might not believe these locales are within a two-hour drive of El Paso. The breathtaking White Sands of the Tularosa Basin are only ninety-five miles to the north; the untouched rivers, delta, and lake of Elephant Butte, merely one hundred and twenty miles away. Getting lost in the Medina of Marrakech is all part of the fun. It takes a strong sense of direction and a lack of panic to navigate the normally busy alleyways. Set out with the idea of exploring and an adventure and you'll be fine. Go with a film camera and you'll be even better.

The Medina of Marrakesh is an old Islamic capital originating from the 11th century. It is enclosed by 16km of ramparts and gates. The city owes its original splendour to the Almoravide and Almohade dynasties (11th - 13th centuries), who made Marrakech into their capital.

The Medina has several architectural and artistic masterpieces from different periods in history:

- the ramparts and gates (in pinkish clay, like most of the original structures)

- the Koutoubia mosque (its 77m high minaret is a key monument of Islamic architecture)

- the Saadian Tombs

- Jemaa El-Fna square

- Ben Youssef Madrassa

I can't count the number of times I've lost my way in the Medina.

Fortunately, Marrakech has plenty of things to see so you'll end up at an interesting place anyway. My best advice - wander aimlessly—without a guide or destination—through the narrow, labyrinthine alleys of the city’s ancient walled medina. In the narrowest, quietest alleys of the medina, don’t be surprised to find a lemon garden or an extravagant Moroccan courtyard.

This is Qatar. Visiting Qatar can be an otherworldly experience solely because the culture is so vastly different than what we know and accept in the Western World. I grew up in a Muslim country so I'm keenly aware of the way I should dress, behave and what is culturally acceptable. To visit a country like Qatar and think we can be fully American or British without a problem is a problem. My best advice to you is if you visit a country like Qatar or U.A.E. or Saudi Arabia, be aware.

That said, Qatar is an incredibly mysterious and fabulous country to visit. I usually only have a brief stopover in Doha, but I once stayed ten days to get a good and genuine feel for Qatar.

The architecture in Qatar is modern, stylish and sexy. I almost feel like I'm at Disneyland whenever I'm in the Doha's business district. The city is unreal. The wealth on display is incredible to look at even though the wealth is unattainable for people like you and me.

Everything new is old again. We always hear the opposite. In Qatar historical places that were old were torn down and rebuilt to look old. Souq Waqif is a great example of what I've just said. Al Zubarah Fort in the middle of the desolate desert is another good example. These are not bad elements about Qatar, but I do find them curious in an amusing sort of way.

One of the highlights for me in Qatar is Katara Cultural Village. It houses an incredible amphiteatre made of limestone that is out of this world beautiful.

By far, White Sands is my most favourite place in America. It's so surreal to be amongst the vast white dunes of gypsum sand. More than this, I hear each breath, footsteps mean something and White Sands is entirely peaceful. I've walked, hiked and slid down the massive dunes tho' the biggest thrill came when an Air Force pilot strapped me in his plane, took the door off and allowed me to literally hang out to photograph the landscape below. It might be said that these white sand dunes touch my soul.
