When I first thought about visiting Nepal, I thought of fresh air, Hinduism and an incredible view of the Himalayas. I did not expect utter chaos on the streets and pollution so thick that the highest mountain range in the world was near impossible to see. This is Kathmandu I'm referring to and not the entire country of Nepal.

There were grand plans to tour around Nepal to see the incredible landscape, but a near fatal airplane ride that lasted all of ten minutes changed my mind. The airplane I was on was put together with Band-Aids. I'm sure of this. Once the plane landed again in Kathmandu, I swore I would never fly again. It was that scary.

So, all of my time was spent exploring the capital city of Kathmandu. Visiting and seeing the Pashupatinath Temple and Kathmandu Durbar Square were incredible experiences. The intricacy of the architecture alone is mind blowing. The crowds at each historical site make them feel a little less holy as it were.

The traffic from Point A to Point B, however, made the experience less than enjoyable.

I don't mean to entirely knock Kathmandu. The people are charming and everyone I encountered was more than friendly. If you love people watching and have no trouble talking to strangers, you'll love Kathmandu. If you want to feel the unique vibe of the city make your way to Thamel.

Thamel is interesting with its overcrowded streets and hundreds of electrical wire twisted and tangled on electric poles.

On Saturdays I join a Zen meditation class at Hakone Gardens, a Japanese garden in Saratoga, California. Well, the class is currently suspended until the shelter in place order is lifted. Today we had an online class, which worked surprisingly well. This photo is at the main square after entering the main gate, looking straight up with a 210° angle fisheye lens.

I am trying out the latest addition in my lens collection, the new Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens. This is a circular fisheye lens, meaning you get a full circle. The angle of view is an amazing 210°, e.g. the camera can see more than a half sphere! The lens has a sturdy build, is very sharp, and has a very large depth of field. For example, at f/5.6 the lens is sharp from 10cm to infinity. Overall, a very good lens.

I processed a balanced, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Thank you for visiting - ♡ with gratitude! Fave if you like it, add comments below, like the Facebook page, order beautiful HDR prints at qualityHDR.com.

Are you considering a trip to Hong Kong? Here are 12 Awesome Reasons to Visit Hong Kong. This is a vibrant modern city still connected to its historic past.

Hong Kong is a good example of giving a travel destination a second chance. In years past, I had barely a stopover or a mere two days in Hong Kong. This is not nearly enough time to scratch the surface as the city has so much to offer.

Hong Kong is not for the faint of heart if you are on a budget. The city lives large and a stay here can set your wallet back. Be prepared to spend and have little except a good time to show for it. The peninsula is beautiful and the surrounding mountains create a natural boundary for the ego-driven skyscrapers that touch the shores.

Much like New York City, you'll feel ant size while walking beneath the towering buildings. The stretches between destinations are further than you think so using public transportation is highly recommended. The transport system, whether via subway/metro or Tram is very simple to navigate.

I went from "meh" to I like Hong Kong during this last journey. Let's see if next time I fall in love.

For now, here are my 12 Reasons To Visit Hong Kong ::

:: Sail around the harbour on the Star Ferry. Seeing Hong Kong's massive skyscrapers from the water will give you a new appreciation for what a metropolis should be.

:: Public transportation in Hong Kong is efficient, clean and safe.

Review of "Sí El Paso" first appeared in the January 2020 issue of El Paso Scene. The gracious review is written by Randy Limbird.

No photographer has chronicled El Paso and the surrounding region more extensively than Mark Paulda. His first photographic compilation of the borderland, “Celebrate El Paso,” came out over 10 years ago. “No one guessed but the book went on to be a best seller and the fastest selling book for my publisher, TCU Press,” Paulda said.

But after a decade of changes — in which landmarks like City Hall and the ASARCO smokestacks were razed, others like San Jacinto Plaza were restored and new ones were created, like the red “X” rising above Juárez — it was time for a new edition.

The result is “Sí El Paso,” a larger version of the older book, with over 250 color photographs of El Paso, Juárez and Southern New Mexico. And while his first book was nothing but photographs, “Sí El Paso” includes memories and stories written by a range of El Pasoans. To make the book even more accessible to our community, the text is provided in both English and Spanish.

Mark, whose photographs have appeared in El Paso Scene several times over the past dozen years, approached me about doing something with the new book, so I offered to put it on the January cover. It was a joy leafing through the book, but hard to pick out just a few images out of so many.

The main picture featured on this month’s cover jumped out at me.

On my way to work one morning, this scene caught my eye. This is the window of a now chain sandwich shop. And luckily, no one was sitting at the table. But it used to be a jeweller. Erickson’s. A wonderful store. It’s located in a neighbourhood that used to be predominantly Swedish, Andersonville. My great grandparents lived here and my great grandfather was a beat cop here.

Now these places, where one could hear - and speak - Swedish are slowly disappearing. They’re almost gone. There used to be two delicatessens on Clark. They would really hum at the holidays when people were buying their smörgåsbord cheeses, meats, and fish. There was a bakery that provided all the baked goods and sweets for holidays and everyday. That closed a couple of years ago.

There’s still a small cafe that serves Swedish pancakes just like grandma used to make. Or at least there was until the pandemic. I really hope this place survives because the food was tops, the service friendly, they knew me, they were always full, and it would be very sad for the neighbourhood, not to mention the employees.

There is a pub which serves glögg at the holidays with neon signs to announce the time has arrived once more. Several bars serve this delight, actually. My grandmothers made glögg, as well, and I always enjoyed the pageantry of that night in the kitchen. I grew up drinking it (in very small amounts) which might explain a few things.

So I was remembering and wishing that some things could remain the same.

The backstory I wrote when this was featured in Frames Magazine (online) in 2020. That same year, it was also included in an online class on what makes a good photo originating in the UK.

And edited today to say the café is still open!

Life in London is fast-paced. You can blink and miss seeing about ten things that just happened. Seriously, this is true.

As I was once told by a shopkeeper in Soho, everyone in London is tired. It's no wonder because the day ends before you know it begins. Take a wild journey tho' London with this fun video which shows various areas of London. The video includes St Paul's Cathedral, numerous London Underground platforms with subway trains in motion, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Circus, busy Oxford Street, Westminster Abbey, Battersea Power Station, Chelsea Bridge and so much more. All of the sights are packed into a one minute video.

It is no secret I am easily entertained. It is also no secret I am fascinated with London at night. Marry the two and you'll find me stuck in the middle of the road capturing London light streams and everything in motion. It all began when I learned photography and my penchant for photographing light streams (lights from cars as they drive by) never diminished. Thanks, Rupert Truman for teaching this little trick to me.

From Piccadilly Circus to St Paul's Cathedral, Haymarket Street and onto Trafalgar Square, then Battersea Power Station. You'll find everything moves fast in the city. The video also takes you to London Underground then back up to Oxford Street.

No wonder everyone in London is tired, but can you really be tired of London?

This article about "Sí El Paso" first appeared in The City Magazine El Paso. The article is written by Austin North.

"El Paso is a feeling," said photographer Mark Paulda. His new photo book "Sí El Paso", the third in a series showcasing El Paso, exemplifies that feeling - it features a plethora of gorgeous photos of the city and its surrounding landscape, supplemented with excerpts of many individual El Pasoans' experiences of the culture. Mark initially released his book titled "Celebrating El Paso" ten years ago - it was a huge success, quickly becoming a best seller and selling out with three months. Mark said, "with the first book, "Celebrating El Paso," I was actually still learning - quite honestly I had no business doing a book at that time. Lo and behold, it became the fastest selling book for my publisher, TCU Press."

Mark is humble about his beginnings, stressing that he was still learning throughout these past ten years. He went to exceptional lengths to study photography - Mark said of the inception of the first book, "I had just returned from London where I had learned from some of the best photographers in Europe. I had to come back to El Paso, but I was still learning and finding my way." He reached out to acclaimed European photographers and studied under three of them - "one is a very accomplished Israeli photographer, one was a photographer for Vogue magazine and one has shot some of the most iconic, classic album covers ...It

Recoleta Cemetery: Buenos Aires, Argentina

On top of a hill in one of Buenos Aires’ most upmarket neighbourhoods lies the city’s most curious yet captivating attraction: the Cementerio de la Recoleta. It is a veritable city of the dead, populated by the tombs of Argentina’s deceased elite. The list of people buried here includes national leaders, military personnel, Nobel Prize winners and wealthy citizens. Even Eva Peron, First Lady and champion of the poor and destitute, was eventually laid to rest here in a casket five meters below the surface.

At first glance it was clear to me that Recoleta Cemetery is, and always has been, a bastion of wealth. Four towering white pillars hold up the entry gate; a forerunner of the grandeur that lies inside. Many of the 6400 mausoleums built here are grand and ornate, and some are even works of art. What they lack in size is more than made up for by the craftsmanship that went into creating them. It seemed to me that these tombs stood primarily to draw attention and show off the status of their occupants. I got the impression of huge self-importance and competing egos. It appears that if one lived large in life, then one remains lavish after death. Needless to say, this place is definitely over the top.

The architecture and ornamentation seen within the cemetery is of many different styles, often in complete contrast to its surroundings.

Turning off of Chispa Road’s crisp smooth pavement deep in the heart of West Texas, I veer onto what seems to be an unassuming stretch of dirt road. “Take a left at the fork in the road about ten miles in,” Fred had told me. “Unlock and pass through the gate then drive right into the ranch.” Driving right into an unexpected driving adventure is just what lie ahead of me.

The thirty thousand acre Coal Mine Ranch is a privately owned investment and playground for a group of businessmen who have called the ranch their sanctuary for more than twenty years. On the rear side of the Sierra Vieja Mountain Range, a world away from the flat grassy desert plains of Highway 90 and thirty miles of rough dirt road winding through steep arroyos from the end of the pavement on Chispa Road, is the Coal Mine Ranch.

Less than midway, with the pavement far behind me, the only sound I hear is the gravel and rock being churned by my 4x4’s wheels and hitting the underside of the vehicle. Clank, pop, clackity clack, in an erratic yet rhythmic cadence.

Lightning fast jackrabbits race by every so often; otherwise, there is no sign of life save for the desert brush, blooming yuccas along the way and a petrified rattlesnake or two. I reach for my mobile phone only to see there is no signal. Immediately, thoughts of the 4x4 breaking down, a flat tire, or more dramatically, a sudden ailment race through my head. Who would find me?

No one would find me and I had convinced myself of this.

For roughly 12 USD or 95 Hong Kong Dollars, Star Ferry's Harbour Tour is a real sightseeing bargain. More importantly, Star Ferry offers splendid views of Hong Kong you can't see otherwise. There are few sight-seeing activities I'll partake in these days, but this ferry is worth breaking my rule. A ride on the water is especially nice when there is a golden sunset ready to glisten on the harbour's waters.

Star Ferry itself is a beloved Hong Kong icon. Until 1978 Star Ferry was the only way to cross between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. It shuttled Hong Kong residents for over 120 years until the Cross-Harbour Tunnel opened. How remarkable the ferry runs as a means of transportation even today.

The harbour tour is an excellent choice for touring Victoria Harbour in roughly an hour. National Geographic Traveller names crossing Victoria Harbour as one of the "fifty places of a lifetime." NG Traveller is enthusiastic it seems, though I'd agree if you should add a ride on the water to your list of things to do in Hong Kong at least once.

You'll board the tour at Tsim She Tsui Star Ferry Pier at the tip of the Kowloon Peninsula. A stately double-decker "Shining Star" replica from the 1920's version awaits you. Do beware of over-exuberant Australians who are willing to fist fight over the front seats. Thank goodness this gentleman wasn't involved, though I did witness such sordid behaviour in disbelief.

That said, choose your space, sit back and relax.

There has been a walkway crossing the Thames River at this point since 1845 when Isambard Kingdom Brunel opened his suspension footbridge. Of course today, we call this point the Golden Jubilee Bridge.

Back in Brunel's time, the footbridge connected the South Bank, now the Queen’s Walk, with the 180-year-old Hungerford Market which closed in 1860 to make way for Charing Cross Railway Station on the north side of the bridge.

Using the original brick pile buttresses of Brunel's footbridge the original Hungerford Railway Bridge combine pedestrian and rail use, which the new 2002 Queens Jubilee footbridges continue to do.

The footbridge(s) offer some of the best views in London and remain one of my favourite places to cross the River Thames. On one side of the bridge, there are unparalleled views of The London Eye, Parliament and Big Ben. The other side of the Jubilee Bridge you can clearly see the Southbank, Royal Festival Hall, The National Theatre and St Paul's Cathedral with Waterloo Bridge in the forefront. At night The City of London shines like a beacon on the hill so beautiful and grand.

Especially nice is the way St Paul's Cathedral dome towers over The City of London. New contemporary buildings are going up at a rapid pace in The City, and yes, some are taller than the cathedral; however, these buildings cannot match the size of St Paul's dome. It's remarkable and so beautifully lighted.

Sri Lanka is an interesting travel destination. The highlight for me in Sri Lanka was staying in an isolated jungle resort and the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple in Colombo.

I must admit my usual go with the flow laissez-faire attitude did not serve me well in Sri Lanka. The island is far larger than one would expect and the winding roads don't allow for quick day trips to see the sites.

Upon realising my mistake, I booked a car and headed east to the area most guidebooks stated not to miss. The Galle area. From Galle northward up the coast there are plentiful beach resorts with long stretches of sand. The landscape toward the east is remarkable. The jungles are simply eye-popping beautiful.

By doing this, I missed everything in between which means I missed a lot of Sri Lanka. Does this disappoint me? No. Do I think I missed anything? Yes and no. I missed the tourist sites but I had an experience I wouldn't have otherwise.

Almost immediately, I met Chameera, who worked at the resort where I stayed. Clandestinely, I'd meet him outside the hotel after his shift and he'd take me by bus to Galle. Chameera shared with me his Galle, his home. I met his family, his friends and saw the area like few others would. I still hear from Chameera and because of him, I look fondly back at Sri Lanka.

On the flip side, I had spoken to a guide who explained what he could arrange for me.

QUIRKY FACTS ABOUT THE LONDON UNDERGROUND

The first escalator on the Underground was installed at Earl's Court in 1911. A one-legged man, "Bumper" Harris, was employed to ride on it and demonstrate its safety. Unlike modern "comb" escalators, the original "shunt" mechanism ended with a diagonal so that the stairway finished sooner for the right foot than for the left.

Anyone not wishing to walk on the escalator was therefore asked to stand to the right to allow others to pass, leading to Britain's unique flouting of escalator etiquette which dictates in most countries that escalators tend to match the rules of the road.

The first crash on the Tube occurred on the line in 1938 when two trains collided between Waterloo and Charing Cross, injuring 12 passengers.

The inaugural journey of the first Central line train in 1900 had the Prince of Wales and Mark Twain on board. The tunnels beneath the City curve dramatically because they follow its medieval street plan. The Central line also introduced the first flat fare: tuppence.

The tiles at Leicester Square depict film sprockets; Baker Street has Sherlock Holmes, Oval cricketers, while Eduardo Paolozzi's abstract mosaics at Tottenham Court Road celebrate musical Denmark Street.

The recording of the phrase "Mind the gap" dates from 1968, and is voiced by Peter Lodge, who owned a recording company in Bayswater.

He stepped in apparently when the actor hired to record the lines insisted on royalties.

During my first visit to the city, I was caught totally off guard. A protest had shut down the highway between the airport and the capital city. The driver carefully navigated the car down a slippery slope to go around the protestors only to met with another large group of protestors right near the hotel.

I was a bit shocked and uncomfortable at first, but once I ventured out on foot I realised there was no harm in my way.

Buenos Aires offers photographers splendid scenes to visit and photograph. There is a European feel to some of the architecture complete with a café culture. You'll find tango in the streets and in theatres. Colorful buildings dot grand avenues while modern architecture seems confined along the harbour. And if you want to visit the departed, Recoleta Cemetery is not to be missed.

One word of caution for any visitor - Be Aware. Be mindful of the people around you and keep your valuables in a safe place. My best suggestion is don't wear flashy jewelry, don't carry a large bag and be really careful with your expensive iPhone or camera. Pickpockets and thievery are unfortunately common in Buenos Aires.

The travel video in this blog post highlights some of the best Buenos Aires has to offer. Each image was captured with my iPhone as sometimes the mobile device is easier to use than a DSLR.

It isn't quite "low volume/high volume," but there is a method to the madness and I tried to maintain value contrast. This was my first curved piecing ever -- and with nary a pin, thanks to Rachel's Curves class!

The quilting is from a quilt I saw and thought I saved, but I cannot find it. (It has rabbits, semicircles with rabbit faces. Anyone?) Anyway, this was my first go at curved (albeit straight-line) quilting, too. Thanks to my partner for giving me an excuse to try some new things.

UPDATE: This mini has been received, so I can say that the inspiration was this quilt, from my partner's mosaic.

A video of Trafalgar Square at Night.

During the day, Trafalgar Square is full of people zig-zagging in all directions. The square has always been a meeting point and even a point for protests. Today, you'll find numerous entertainment events that run the day to night in Trafalgar Square including buskers in various locations.

The time I love Trafalgar Square the most is during the night. The grandeur of the square is amplified after dark when the crowds thin out. And, depending on the time of night you're there, you could possibly have the centre of London entirely to yourself. Stand overlooking the square with the National Gallery at your back. The views are splendid and you can appreciate the great city of London all the more.

In view is the glorious St Martin-in-the-Fields, a glimpse of Charing Cross, Canada House and even Big Ben in the distance. If you look up, I'm sure Admiral Nelson reaches into the heavens. I don't know why Nelson looks higher in the sky at night, but he does. The sound of the fountains is louder at night and they almost sound as if you are near a waterfall.

The passing double-decker buses are especially fun to watch as they circle the roundabout then jet off into Whitehall or Charing Cross Road. If you like night photography, Trafalgar Square is an ideal place to capture light streams. Of course, there are all of the other sights I mentioned to photograph as well.

I hope you all are doing fine and staying indoors (but of course going outside out of necessity). These are challenging times and we need to act patiently and responsibly. I'm taking online classes. It's a mess but adaptation is the key. I hope I get the hang of it soon. Tell me about yourself. How is the time going for you in quarantine?

This shot was taken in evening as the storm was approaching. I'm glad I get to have a balcony where I sit and relax and enjoy the views.

I feel like my cellphone camera is losing the spark you know as in capturing low quality pictures. I had to edit this to ensure good quality. This picture looked completely fine on my cellphone until I opened it on my laptop.

Five minutes after arriving on the main island of Venice I thought I was lost. In fact, I wondered if I'd find my way anywhere much less back to the hotel. The myriad of bridges over canals, the narrow alleys twisted, turned and led me around far too many corners then confused my sense of direction. I kept walking and picking out landmarks though there was no guarantee I'd return the same way.

Eventually, I arrived at St Mark's Square and this is when my heart melted. I fell in love. My love affair with Venice continues today and I've visited countless times. I still get turned around every so often though my heart doesn't race like that first time. Moving forward always lands me at or near the place I want to be.

My Best Suggestions To Discover The Magic of Venice ::

:: Take a water taxi from the airport to your hotel in Venice.

:: Take a vaporetto to San Giorgio then look back at the main island of Venice in awe.

:: Let out a deep sigh when you see the Bridge of Sighs

:: You'll think you're lost, but you're never lost in Venice. Toss your map and explore.

:: Be a tourist and go to the top of the Campanile in St Mark's Square. The view will astound you. If you're lucky you'll hear the bells of the Campanile up close and personal. They are gloriously loud.

:: Visit St Mark's Square both day and night. I love night best because few others are there. You can have your own Venice moment.

:: Take in the view from the Rialto Bridge. The bridge is overcrowded during the day, so stay up late and go at night.

:: There are plenty of squares throughout Venice. Find each and every one and drink them in.

:: Buy a Chorus Pass to visit all of Venice's incredible churches, then marvel at the masterpieces inside.

:: The truth is Venice is magic everywhere you turn and every corner you take. Be respectful of the locals. It is a living breathing functioning city.

:: The floating market at Campo Barnaba is fabulous. Don't miss it.

:: See where the birthplace of gondolas and where they are made by hand. It's fascinating to watch even across the small canal.

:: Your love affair begins in Venice and never really ends.

There are many reasons to love Venice. If the city is on your travel list, this video presentation will help you discover Venice so you can make the most out of your time. My best advice - open your mind, your eyes and your heart then allow Venice to do the rest. You might also want to throw your map away. A map will not help you much.

Have you seen movies where a person looks through a keyhole? On the viewer's side, the side where the person looking through the keyhole, the scene is dark and perhaps ominous? Through the keyhole might be a mysterious scene or even something magical?

As viewers of the movie, we are taken into a scene and we feel as if we're part of the action. Not only is the actor in the movie looking through the keyhole, but we are as well. We see what the actor sees at the very same time. We feel the suspense, angst, shock, horror, joy, enchantment - whatever emotion the moviemaker wants us to feel, we feel it, too.

This is an effective method in moviemaking and cinematography as we become part of the action. This is also an effective method in photography.

As photographers it is important to draw the viewers of your photographs into your image. Your photograph is the keyhole, so to speak, that allows viewers to experience or view what you have seen and captured with your camera. If your viewers can be drawn into your photo, then they will feel the emotion or feeling that you're trying to convey. And, if you can draw viewers in and make them feel a certain way, then you my friend, are not a picture taker but instead a photographer.

How do you draw people into your photographs? You begin by mastering photo composition. You master photo composition by practicing all key elements until they become second nature to you.

The tradition of night markets in Hong Kong reaches back to the days when the region first became a major trading centre. The days were hot, and with no air conditioning back then, the best time to go shopping was in the evening. Night markets were located throughout Hong Kong though over time and re-development schemes the markets disappeared one by one.

Temple Street Night Market is the last remaining example of a traditional Hong Kong night market. It has been a fixture of the Jordan/Yau Ma Tei District since the 1920's and perhaps even before. The market takes its name from the nearby Tin Hau Temple and you may have seen it as a backdrop in a number of movies.

People visit to buy inexpensive goods from bags, fashions and accessories, or jewellery, trinkets, electronics and gadgets. Plentiful delicious street foods tease any passerby whether its a feast of snacks, noodles or congee that is all served well into the wee hours.

The market is a popular place for visitors and locals alike to congregate in the evenings. Various forms of entertainment are common while you meander up and down the buzzing street. Expect to find mystic fortunetellers or tarot card readers from whom you can receive glimpses into your future. There is a long tradition of fortune telling in and around temples tho' the fortunetellers are not located inside the market.

The fortunetellers and tarot card readers are closer to the Temple itself as they have always been.
