Venice is spectacular in every shade of light

The night is Venice's time of tranquillity

Water and Acqua Alta are beautiful even if they are menacing

You'll marvel at every canal you encounter

Getting 'lost' in the maze of narrow streets and alleys are what makes Venice fascinating

Watching night fall over Venice is ever so romantic

Walking through St Mark's Square after midnight

Venice is pure magic

Venice is arguably the most romantic city in the world

The city is charming at every turn

It's possible Venice has more bridges than streets

Palaces, churches and museums

Rich, remarkable history of Venice

Cruising the canals on a private boat

You'll be inspired by the art, which is everywhere and part of everyday life

Just because it's Venice and there's no other place in the world like it

Be stunned by the detail in everything

Pause and drink in every square in Venice. Or, stop and have a drink in every square in Venice

The enduring and formidable architecture

Private water taxi, especially from the airport. What a way to arrive in Venice

Picture perfect views

You'll think you're in a movie

Mysterious streets especially in the darkness of the night

Your love affair begins here whether you're with someone or not

This was a fun image. And a lot of work. The background is from the ruins of the United Comstock Merger Mill at American Flats, Nevada, demolished in late 2014. "The working life of this cyanide-processing operation, once the largest in the country, began in 1922 and ended just four years later with the collapse in the price of silver. All salvageable equipment and building materials were removed soon afterward. The eight buildings on the site slowly decayed, but provided an engaging post-apocalyptic setting for graffiti artists, photographers, and airsoft warriors. For many growing up in the area the site served as a favored coming-of-age venue for escaping parental authority." (From All Around Nevada)

My husband and I found it and photographed these ruins in 2013 over two days.

I took an online class this year in compositing. Sure, I knew how to composite, but this took us so much further, adding atmosphere and ensuring that the light fit the image, including adding appropriate shadows. The musician was photographed late on Christmas Eve, I think in 2012, in San Francisco. His notes eerily echoed thru the empty canyons of downtown highrises. I knew this was who I wanted to later composite into the Comstock ruin.

A month ago I managed the mood I'd envisioned with the graffitied columns seeming to lean forward to listen as if the musician's audience. Enjoy. If you like this sort of thing. n

Posting something completely different....

The American artist Chuck Close, photographed his subjects first and then copied them in paint onto large..make that HUGE canvases...his goal was to make the paintings resemble a photograph as closely as he could...this is a finished canvas of his friend Frank...

When I was at the Mpls. Institute of Arts and saw how many people stopped and looked....and stayed, I knew I had to capture this iconic scene.

*******

(MARCH 30: Last week or so I've 'sunk below the surface'......finally bought new lens today after much research and making my local camera store mentor either love or hate me with my many questions, learning CS5 and Lightroom (great buy on the two), need to buy an external drive, and cull/organize better my photos)....and starting the online class I purchased awhile ago......so I'm slowing down on flickr a bit, but will catch up with you folks, groups, postings as I'm able....take care of yourselves in the meantime, and I'll be popping in to see what you're doing....big hugs to you:)........Pat

PS: After looking over Lightroom and viewing some tutorials I think how much simpler iPhoto organization is.....but I've decided to make a transfer (am now shooting in RAW only) with my new photos to LR>external drive....the drive which I still need to purchase. At this point I'm still sticking with Canon, new lens for my XSi....EF-S 2.8 17-85mm.....30 day trial period.....not going to buy a new camera yet.....just making a sideways move:).......am thinking I will go 2.8 70-200 with 2x teleconverter (400mm) for wildlife....2.8 will go up to 5.6 w/teleconverter.

Btw I LOVE CS5.....easier than PSElements in my opinion as far as I have used it although Camera Shop Mentor says that what I'm doing in CS5 for basic editing, I can as easily accomplish in Light Room....maybe so and use CS5 more for creativity....anyone have thoughts, opinions on this?

A relatively new way to explore Hong Kong arrived at the Hong Kong TramOramic tour. With the purchase of a 'Golden Ticket', you'll have two days to get the most out of your purchase. And, though the tour is included in its name, don't expect a tour guide. Be prepared to conveniently travel through the bustling city and hop off at various points to explore on your own.

The stylish trams are reminiscent of those used in the 1920's and a brilliant way to discover Hong Kong without the frustration of getting lost. The historical trams are open-top so you can clearly see major landmarks along the tram network and learn about daily life in the city. The TramOramic tour is an hour long though with the purchase of the Golden Ticket you have two days to also use the regular Hong Kong Tramway network to explore Hong Kong on your own.

The hour-long tour itself begins at one of two starting points. I used the Western Market Terminus as it is convenient to Conrad Hong Kong. The other terminal is Causeway Bay Terminus. (See the route maps below).

I had pretty much given up on shooting any fall colors this year. This is officially my last year teaching at Mt San Antonio College and I knew my schedule would probably be way too full during late September to make the trip back to Colorado.

But then this Delta variant thing showed up and suddenly one of my classes was cancelled and was replaced with an online class. Which meant that I was now only teaching 2 days a week. Suddenly, I had an open window of opportunity from Sept 22 - 28 to head back to Colorado after getting absolutely NOTHING from my trip last year. (I think I went 8 days straight without seeing a cloud.)

So on September 22, I jumped in the FJ after my last class and headed up the 15 and hung a right on the I-70. I was too late to make it for the sunrise on Sept 23, but I headed South into the San Juan Mountains. As I arrived, I noticed that there were some clouds that had begun to move up from the South and I was really hoping that they would stick around for sunset. As sunset drew near, I charged up a ridge to get above the treeline. As I arrived at the top, I began to hear some folks coming up behind me. After a few more minutes I was joined by Colorado photographer Nick Selway, his fiancee Sarah and another Colorado photographer, Joe Garza. It was only a short time later that it began to hail and then the sky opened up on us as we shot. Suddenly, the clouds broke to the West and sunlight poured in across the valley, creating a rainbow off to our left.

The difference from last year could not have been more dramatic. When I arrived last year, the skies were filled with hazy smoke and there was not a cloud in sight. This year, I found a rainbow at the top of the first ridge I climbed on my first day shooting! We shot in the rain for nearly an hour until the last of the good light had been snuffed out by the clouds, and then headed back down to the valley below. I am very grateful to Nick, Sarah and Joe for slowing up to wait for me on the way out. It was a long, slippery challenging hour back to the car.

I climbed that ridge twice that day and came back down both times a considerable distance from the FJ. I was exhausted by the time made it back the second time...but what a great start to my time shooting Autumn colors in the San Juan Mountains!

l'arbre familial

____

I'm taking an online class where one of the assignments was to create a series of photos around the notion of one's "family tree." The idea is to relate one or some stories related to our family in a literal or metaphorical sense. This is from that series and speaks of how we remain attached to our family tree while growing in our own directions, holding on to where we came from, while looking out into the larger world. Healthy families give their children both roots and wings. Healthy families teach their children empathy and forgiveness, compassion and love-- for the self as well as for others, to accept the inherent imperfections that exist in everyone. Healthy families teach their children to take risks, to allow themselves to stumble and fall, all the while knowing there will be a safety net beneath them and someone who will dust them off, gently place bandaids over their wounds, listen patiently as they tell their stories, and tell them that everything is going to be okay. Despite some significant loss/trauma during my childhood, I realize how fortunate I am to have had a mom and a grandmother who have done all of these things.

____

A walk anywhere in, and around, Dubrovnik will provide you with views unmatched in other areas of the world. In your imaginative mind, take a step back in time, then wonder what it was like so many years ago when these stunning structures were built. I love travelling this way. What was it like to be back in time? What were the sights? Smells? Sounds?

The luscious blues of the Adriatic Sea surrounding the Old City of Dubrovnik is one of the more beautiful sights one can see in this part of the world.

Ah, London Bridge. Is it just me, or is this the one place where the wind whips through with vengeance? The "Friends of the River Thames" group is not too pleased with me because I have lost hats, umbrellas, a scarf, and almost a camera due to the wind here. Is there a "Friends of the River Thames" organisation? It would not surprise me if there is. Hmm... When the temperatures are cold in London, it is colder here for sure. Bundle up and hold your belongings tight if you plan to spend time on the bridge.

But, don't let Mother Nature's punch of a breeze deter you from choosing London Bridge as a place to stop to enjoy the views or take some great photographs. The bridge is a great spot, especially with Tower Bridge, London City Hall, the More London Estate, the Shard, and Southwark Cathedral in perfect view. This bridge, too, has a fantastic ledge to steady your camera. Do, however, put the camera strap around your neck for safe keeping. One bump from a passerby, a wrong whip of the wind, or one slight act of carelessness will send your camera diving into the River Thames. The edge of London Bridge is slick.

I make this sound like a daunting location, though it really is superb. Walking across London Bridge should be on your list of things to do in London. I will often venture across the bridge, then walk to The Monument to the Great Fire of London, then continue up into the City of London for night photography.

Bhutan can mean many things to visitors. It is safe to say a journey to Bhutan will open an entirely new world to you. From the spirituality of Buddhism to the majestic Himalaya Mountains and the ancient fortresses, Bhutan will touch you in ways you never imagined.

The following advice will help you have the best experience in Bhutan.

The tiny kingdom of Bhutan is mostly untouched by the modern world. Yes, there is phone service and faint hints of the internet, but you will not find corporate chain stores anywhere. For those travellers who are weary of being bombarded with marketing, the lack of the familiar is a very very good thing.

The Bhutanese are kind. Very kind. You will find the Bhutanese to be mindful, thoughtful and generally at peace. They also enjoy the quiet, so if you tend to be loud, tone it down a bit.

Everything you see and the experiences you have in Bhutan are real, genuine, authentic and probably everyday life. Their daily dress is normal for them. Nothing is for a show just because you are visiting.

Be respectful in the Temples. Bhutan is almost wholly Buddhist and each monastery and Temple is active even if they are near a thousand years old.

Go with the flow. Expect your itinerary to change. Follow the advice of your guide. And yes, every visitor to Bhutan must have a guide.

When people ask me which are my favourite places I've visited? I can only answer by naming those I would return to.

It is raining...but, that's ok...that is the only time i don't feel agitated doing the dumb things that need to be done! Spent 3 hours at the college today trying to register Kiera for 2 classes...online classes that would not register online! Now working on an override on one class where the teacher is willing to work around the fact that she is SO far away...but the class is now full. The Maladaptive Personality class is showing 2 on campus dates, so we are trying to get an ok on that one too. Would be really happy if i felt like i accomplished something!! :-D

Calm, quiet, peaceful, simple, majestic, genuine, spiritual, kindness, unaffected, warmth, respectful, storytellers. These are all words I'd use to describe Bhutan and the Bhutanese. There are a few words missing, I know.

Bhutan is called Druk Yul - Land of Thunder Dragon.

Because of the violent and large thunderstorms that whip down through the valleys from the Himalayas, Bhutan is known as the Land of Thunder Dragon. The sparkling light of Thunderbolts was believed to be the red fire of a dragon. The Druk is the Thunder Dragon of Bhutanese mythology and a Bhutanese national symbol. It appears on the flag, holding jewels representing wealth.

The tiny kingdom of Bhutan is nestled high in the Himalayas between China, Nepal and India. To find it on a map you really must search and fly into Paro the plane's pilot carefully negotiates between mountains taller than you've ever seen.

Map Showing Location of Bhutan.

I've never been more at peace with everything than when visiting Bhutan. The culture and traditions are genuine; the people warmer than any visitor could ever expect; the landscape towers over life; and the architecture transports you a thousand years back. Nothing is for "show" in Bhutan. What you see is real in every way. There is no pretence and there is no keeping up with anyone else.

Our world changes rapidly, yet while Bhutan progresses, it is a country mostly unaffected by modernity.

Morning Flight

It was morning, and the new sun glimmers across the sand of the desert floor. “Clear!” beams Suzie, as she pokes her head out the twin engine’s open window. Flashing a mischievous smile at me she asks, “Are you ready?” “Of course,” I respond, thinking nothing of her facial expression.

Like several times before, the plane’s engines rev causing a slight vibration on the floor board as we slowly roll toward runway one at Santa Teresa’s Municipal Airport. The buzz I feel in my feet and legs always has a calming pre-flight effect on me, though little did I know this take-off would be different. After negotiating the slight curve onto the main runway, I vaguely hear Suzie’s voice through the headset, “Mark, it’s your turn to take off and fly.” As the words quickly register in my brain, no doubt my eyes widely pop open and my heart thumps as if it will burst from my chest. No thoughts race through my head except, “Good Lord, please let my fly today!” There is no time to second guess her decision or my ability; or lack of ability, as I’ve only ever been a passenger during these flights. Keeping outwardly calm, yet tightening every muscle in my body, I intently listen to Suzie’s instructions.

I reach for, and pull the throttle with a slight tremble, causing the plane to move faster.

For most of us, This is Paris -

"I love Paris in the spring time

I love Paris in the fall

I love Paris in the winter when it drizzles

I love Paris in the summer when it sizzles

I love Paris every moment

Every moment of the year

I love Paris

Why oh why do I love Paris

Because my love is here

I love Paris every moment

Every moment of the year

I love Paris

Why oh why do I love Paris

Because my love is here"

There are so many iconic sights and neighborhoods in Paris so you can't go wrong anywhere you go. My best suggestions are learn how to efficiently use the Paris Metro and know where your walking so you can navigate your way on foot.

My next suggestion is one I'd give no matter where you travel in this world. Don't be a tourist. Don't act like a tourist.

If you know a handful of French words and can string together a sentence, use them. The French appreciate anyone who tries to speak their language. Parisians might chuckle at you, but they mean it in an admirable way.

Being in Paris is more of a feeling than rushing around checking off a list of things to do and see. Walk along the Seine River and wonder what it must have been like a hundred years ago. Bring out your artistic flare and imagine what it must have been like for Gertrude Stein to give Picasso, Henry Matisse and Ernest Hemingway their big break. Splurge and enjoy proper French cuisine at a Michelin Star restaurant.

Feel the energy of Paris.

trying on some sort of street photography before the COVID-19 virus pandemic happened.

These are students taking a break at San Miguel Elementary School.

COVID-19 has become a catalyst for #educational institutions worldwide to search for innovative solutions. Now that online classes are considered to be the "new normal", will we ever see group of friends eating together like this again (?)

Last year, when the pandemic hit like a freight train, I turned to more macro and local intimate scenes like many other photographers. My husband thoughtfully bought me a proper macro lens that was on my wishlist for years, and this spring, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying putting into practice what I’ve learned during shelter in place from online classes by Kathleen Clemons and Sara Marino – two masters of macro botanical photography in my opinion! Even though the world is slowly opening back up again, my perspective will always be in tune with the tiny macro world at my feet, a silver lining of this past year.

If there is a single road that leads to a view unsurpassed by few others in the southwest, then surely Transmountain Road cutting through the Franklin Mountains would be it. The winding and ascending journey along Transmountain will take one to 5120ft, which is where I stop one brisk January pre-dawn morning to watch the sun rise above the far horizon.

The temper of the mountain is calm at this hour, almost in a slumber in the brisk morning air. No giant pine trees soften the winter wind whispering in my ear. No singing birds or running deer to take my eye off the sky. Only high-elevation cacti and desert brush crawl along the rocks and boulders often jutting out like nature’s high rises descending in to the valleys on either side of the Franklins.

Looking west I see the near full moon sinking below the horizon. Seconds later, I turn to the east marveling at a fiery ball nudging above the desert floor, and the royal blue sky rapidly transforms with bursts of splendid golden hues as if Mother Nature’s paintbrush splatters across the heavens. In an instant natural fireworks fill the sky as the moon sets and sun rises instantaneously as I watch in awe. A moment passes and the sun’s rays stretch across East El Paso tickling the sides of the Franklin Mountains waking her for another day.

Gradually the glow of the rising sun ascends from the base of the mountain to its top as one slowly opens their eyes after a good night’s sleep.

White Sands in Southern New Mexico is off the beaten path. You have to know the sand dunes exist and then you must make an effort to get there. You've seen the sea of white in movies, music videos, and ad campaigns. You may have even seen Brad Pitt's painful looking photo shoot in GQ Magazine accompanying his redemption article after his split from Angeline Jolie. If you did see the article, I'm sorry this could have been your introduction to a landscape larger than Brad will ever be.

White Sands always fascinated me on the ground. I often found myself amongst the dunes when I needed to clear my head, understand the world or to simply take a deep breath. Someone once told me White Sands touches my soul and I believe this to be true. The landscape is unforgiving and what seems to be endless waves of white sand dunes amongst the brown Chihuahua Desert in the Tularosa Basin. There is a purity to the white gypsum sand accentuated by the Sacramento Mountain range in the background.

If you allow it to be true, White Sands brings balance and understanding to an otherwise nonsensical world. Everything seems to come together and make sense at White Sands. We need this today, don't we?

As I was preparing for my book, "El Paso 120: Edge of the Southwest," I visualized a variety of unique perspectives to photograph this beautiful southwestern landscape. I'd also visit the area at various times of the day for different lighting situations.

By far, White Sands is my most favourite place in America. It's so surreal to be amongst the vast white dunes of gypsum sand. More than this, I hear each breath, footsteps mean something and White Sands is entirely peaceful. I've walked, hiked and slid down the massive dunes tho' the biggest thrill came when an Air Force pilot strapped me in his plane, took the door off and allowed me to literally hang out to photograph the landscape below. It might be said that these white sand dunes touch my soul.

Idyllic, #Awe-Inspiring, Breathtaking, Speechless, Silence, Mind-Boggling, Overwhelming, Wondrous - all appropriate words for The #white sand dunes of Southern New Mexico. Rising unexpectedly out of the otherwise drab brown Chihuahuan Desert, the white dunes are the largest of their kind anywhere in the world. The Dunes are prominent in my best-selling book, "El Paso 120: Edge of the Southwest"

Travel Destination - Museum of Islamic Art. Doha Qatar

By far, one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen in a long time - anywhere - is the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. The various layers, the stone used, and the sharp clean lines are impeccable. What's more is this beauty is surrounded by water making it all the more stunning. Unfortunately, I would have to wait until a later extended visit to go inside. In future posts, I will return to what I call the "Jewel of the Middle East," and give a more in-depth view of this gem...

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei, the Museum is comprised of the main building with an adjacent education wing connected by a large central courtyard. The main building rises five-storeys, topped by a high domed atrium within a central tower.

The cream-coloured limestone captures the changes in light and shade during the day.

The interior is no less spectacular. The centrepiece of the atrium is a curved double staircase leading up to the first floor. Above it floats an ornate circular metal chandelier echoing the curve of the staircase.

An oculus, at the top of the atrium, captures and reflects patterned light within the faceted dome. The five-storey 45-metre tall window on the north side gives spectacular panoramic views across the bay.

The geometric patterns of the Islamic world adorn the spaces, including the ceilings of the elevators.

Hopefully all of you are hanging in there during this challenging and difficult time. So much has happened since my last post. I made another trip up the coast during my Spring/Winter break at the end of February and drove right through virus country when it was taking off and then went right back to teaching after arriving home. A week later I traveled to a convention in Salt Lake and when I returned, I may or may not have had COVID-19. I had all the symptoms and dutifully contacted Kaiser about the possibility of getting a test but was turned down, presumably because they didn't have enough tests in the early days of the pandemic. Not to be deterred, I headed in for a flu test so I could rule out the virus, but the flu test came back negative. And they STILL wouldn't give me a COVID-19 test. So....after two weeks of coughing and a fever that kept coming back...I'm symptom free. Whatever I had is now gone. :)

Along with almost all of my classes. :( My online classes are still going strong, but my on campus ensembles were all cancelled for the semester...which now has given me quite a bit of extra time. What to do? Well...I guess it's time to start digging through the thousands of shots that I haven't had time to get to for the past 8 months or so.

So I thought I should probably start with a shot that represents the reason I dropped everything and made the 2000 mile round trip to the Oregon Coast last December. I had seen a couple of other shots from Shore Acres toward the end of November and I promised myself if I ever had the opportunity to head up there with the right conditions, I would jump on it. After checking the forecast and seeing a high surf warning with high winds and waves approaching 25 feet, I was in the Prius and heading North the next day.

After spending most of the day shooting facing North with a hardy crowd of photographers who didn't seem to mind the gale or the rain, I began to wonder what this section of beach looked like from the opposite direction. Either way you look at it, this particular section of the Oregon Coast is simply awe inspiring if you show up on a day with a high tide and a high surf warning. From what I have seen, the coastal rocks in this area must form some sort of ramp and as large waves approach and crash, they are launched dozens of feet into the air....possibly over 100 feet at times. It's like the fourth of July with 20,000 cubic feet of water.

Granted this isn't the cleanest photo I've ever taken as the air was full of mist and it was still raining off and on while I was shooting, but it's one of the larger explosions that I witnessed over the two days I shot there. If you look closely, you might be able to see the ant sized people standing just to the left of this massive wave.

Later that week I made the trip up to Cape Disappointment before turning around and heading home. I was hoping for similar conditions on my February trip, but unfortunately, the sun came out for several days which must have been awesome for the folks who live up there....but not as much for wave junkies like me.

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying something a bit different this year by uploading a video for my annual Christmas post. Not sure how many of you will see this, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Most of the content for this was taken last February over three consecutive snow storms in Yosemite Valley. During the first one, I was actually snowed in as they closed the roads in and out of Yosemite before closing the roads in the park itself as heavy, wet snow brought down several trees and branches throughout the park. While it was a bit sketchy shooting in the park that day, it was definitely amazing to shoot fresh snow in a nearly empty park.

I'm also trying desperately to keep my blog going which I think now has a total of two posts this year. It's been a real challenge to keep posting content there as I've started teaching a new online class at the college and have also been doing quite a bit of traveling this year. If you want to check out my new article, feel free to visit at theresonantlandscape.com .

After banging my head against the wall with Adobe Premiere, I finally switched over to DaVinci Resolve to edit this video. SO much easier! I'm thinking about upgrading to the 4k version for future projects. The quality of this video isn't the best as I wasn't there to shoot video, so what you see here is either shot with my iPhone or GoPro along with some stills from my Nikon.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish all of my friends here on Flickr a very Merry Christmas! I hope to catch up and see as many of your photos as possible over the holidays. :)

All the best,

WM

When you are near St Paul’s and the bells start chiming with various tones, you can’t help but stop to look up at Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. When you are up close the sound of the bells can be deafening. They are rather loud, but the beautiful sound echoes through the City of London like none you’ll hear anywhere else.

If you want a real treat, visit St Paul’s during Evensong. The last time I attended, the entrance was free of cost. The young choir is simply beautiful and sitting inside the cathedral with virtually no tourists in the building makes the moment truly special. Be sure to check St Paul’s Evensong Schedule before you go.

With alert senses, an open mind and a curiousness to dive into a new city, land or culture, your travel experiences amplify beyond compare. Visuals, sounds, and aromas heighten excitement and most of these things are unplanned.

I'm not a dancer. Even in my wildest dreams, I don't rhythmically glide across a polished floor with my partner. That's not to say I'm a two left-footer. I'm simply too self-conscious to be on stage, which is strange because I'm far from shy. I'd rather be behind the scenes in a supporting role or lifting others up onto my shoulders. It's true. I'm more comfortable being in the shadows. But, I very much enjoy watching other gracefully display their passion for applause.

During each time in Buenos Aires, I always found myself sitting amongst a throng of tourists watching a Tango show. A Tango show is the "thing to do" in Buenos Aires if you didn't know. I'm rarely one to do what typical tourists do as I'm often off the proverbial beaten path. And to be honest, the show seemed like a tourist trap in my mind. After a bit of self-resistance, there I was doing the thing I swore I wouldn't do. The first time I went it was my birthday I remember. I sat at a long table with people I'd never seen before, and would never see again, with a plated pick a number dinner. I sat sulking a bit and thinking what a self-inflicted mistake to be amongst the crowd who were anxiously awaiting the curtain rise.

The lights dimmed, the music rambled through the air and the dancers articulated their choreographed steps across the stage. Seeing and hearing this display immediately changed my disposition.
