Brewery Plantation, Clarghyll Colliery, New Year's Eve 2008.

On the last day of 2008, in -6C, a very generous person showed me a new place.

A place full of silent pines, frozen waterfalls, vent shafts, mysterious altars and adandoned machinery.

First in a series of Clarghyll Colliery and the plantation.

Polaroid OneStep 600

Polaroid Originals 600 b&w film

Portland, Oregon.

30/31August2020.

Polaroid 600 OneStep, Polaroid Yellow Duochrome.

I scanned these three images together with the intent of presenting them singularly, but I’ve got a heluva backlog of images and I thought they worked well as a triptych as scanned.

My scanner oversaturates or over vibrates, so I have tried to correct that with moderate success in Photoshop, trying to stay true to the original. I don’t usually include so much commentary (below), but I’ve had a few beers and that I guess is what can happen.

The left image is a decommissioned outhouse, it seems to be CCC era, a shame it and others in the park have fallen to disrepair. The middle is Musky and Wesley with a pair of big conifers up above one of the fields. The third, I realized after scanning is not from the park, but is a view up of the large elm tree in front of our house. I just happened to be on my back. I’m there more and more these days.

My review:

Pier Park is a gem of a park in North Portland. It does not draw crowds and seems most popular with the Frisbee golf set. Those guys can be pretty serious, In a laid back Portland kind of way.

My impressions are simple in that I have not been here very long, and now almost half that time has been Covid time, so I could have it all wrong. There is evidence of more populous times, like large collections of picnic tables grouped in designated areas labeled with letters, like A and B and C, etcetera. Giving the appearance of large groups of people. But now these areas are almost completely empty, like some kind of zombie apocalypse movie.

Pier Park, I have read, was designed after another Portland park, Laurelhurst. The Laurelhurst park might be an Olmstead inspired thing and is in some ways like a miniature Central Park. Okay, there is a man-made lake with ducks and stuff. The Laurelhurst neighborhood is kinda hoity-toity. But the area around Pier Park is not, I guess it’s considered St. John’s. Anyway, it seems like they were making a Laurelhurst Park sort of park and then just kind of quit. There are some really massive trees, like Doug Fir and Sequoia and some big cedars, and there are a few fields and quite a few trails where sometimes you have to watch out for flying disks and the sound of, “Four!” There’s no lake, nor creek.

Another fine aspect of the park is the active railroad along it’s north flank and separating it from Chimney Park. A fine pedestrian bridge crosses the tracks, I prefer parking at Chimney. It’s a pleasure to hear the train horn blowing and the creaking and squealing of their wheels echoing amongst the old trees.

Polaroid OneStep Express camera. Impossible B&W Instant Film for Polaroid 600

So, I dragged out all my instant film cameras this week. Polaroid OneStep, Polaroid Land Camera, Impossible I-1. I also pulled out a fairly large stash of film for these cameras. Well...some of it was...well most of it was REALLY old...like 2011 old. What I found is that all of the instant fllm for the OneStep was DOA. The Impossible film for the Land Camera was the same. My Fuji-film FP100/3000 is still kicking...so I have a little time left before my Land Camera becomes an Objet d'art. All of my I-1 instant film, being not quite as old as the films for the other cameras...is in tip-top shape. I even found a few packs of 600. Moral of the story? Well...there actually is none. I like investigating things as much as I like knowing things ahead of time. That is to say that I pretty much knew the Impossible 600 from 10 years ago was not going to work, but that didn't stop me from trying every single last frame.

Oh...one other note: When I lamented to my partner that I only had about 6 packs of film for the Land Camera left, her response was, "Oh well...then you'll have to throw the camera away." I said, "Throw it away!?!? It's a work of art." She said, "It's ugly." What's your take? Ugly or art or somewhere in between.
