19/31 October

I start the October Photo a Day challenge with a sprained ankle so not ventured further than the garden. For saying it's only Day 1, I've flitted from one subject to another!

The highest point we can find the Albercutx Watchtower at 380 metres above sea level. The late 16th century tower was one of the main lookout points to ward off the constant threat of corsairs.

Day 29 of my 31 prompts from 31 lists Drawtober!

Today's is "Silent Mist" from IG artist maruti_bitamin

Since I've already done Silent Hill fanart twice this month I opted for a nice and simple spooky ghostie.

I just packed my CDs off to Music Magpie...they accept albums, DVDs, and games. £40 winging it's way to me just in time for the fast-approaching MW3 release date :-)

I even managed to sneak one of the wife's albums in there... Can you spot it?

3 October. The ewes are enjoying the autumn grass... except when the heavens open and they start to float away. Hopefully a better lambing season to come than the last one.

Throughout the month there was a high (being published) and a low (breaking my 10-20mm lens).........

We are trying to make it possible for our holiday cottage guests to have an affordable holiday with us through renewable energy sources. Solar PV and our own sustainable logs for burners in the properties are two of the ways.

Sadly one of our ancient 60ft Scots Pines had to come down as it was rotting out at the bottom. To avoid crushing everything beneath it, the only way was in small pieces... which took all day.

I've been away for a couple of days and it wasn't until the evening of Day 1 that I remembered the October picture a day challenge. This is the only usable photo from the day, and it's a phone shot.

This is St. Oswald's Church in Strubby Lincolnshire. Strubby is the village where my maternal grandmother was born.

In 2016 my brother-in-law managed to ride the 60 miles of the gruelling Dartmoor Demon roadcycle sportive with 10 friends and family. He had (and still has) stage 4 bowel cancer. Tim raised a staggering £273,000 (which some of my kind Flickr friends also generously contributed to) for The Institute of Cancer Research who are at the sharp end in the fight against this terrifying illness.

Last night we had the final presentation of the cheque and a talk from Prof Raj Chopra (Head of Cancer Therapeutics). This money was vital in opening up new lines of research and furthering the ICR's work.

Took my bridge camera into town with me today and managed to find 10 minutes in the park.

Located in Queens Park, Loughborough is the foundry casting case used to cast the heaviest bell in the UK, "Great Paul", weighing in at 17,002 kilograms (37,483 lb).

It was made by John Taylor & Co a Loughborough based company, in 1881. It is the largest British cast bell in Britain, made for St Paul's Cathedral London. Many churches and others structures across the world have bells cast in Loughborough.

A short walk around Shardlow, Derbyshire on a beautifully warm day. The colours were lovely so not sure why I've chose to go B&W!

Shardlow was an important inland port and thanks to a conservation order in the 1970's many of the old warehouses still survive. Here is one of them beside the Trent & Mersey Canal.

Spaniels in a muddy puddle... glad none of them are mine!

No, I'm not going trick and treating, but about this time of year (or Easter) I buy myself a new bucket. Useful for those little jobs around the house and garden where you don't actually need the big bucket.

I really want to do more portrait work, so I went to Calke Abbey today with that in mind as I knew they had one of their regular "Calke Alive" events on whereby the volunteers dress up in period dress. Today it was World War 2. There was also a Tea Dance going on in the stables which looked great fun, and if I hadn't been on my own would have loved to have joined in. Children and adults alike all dancing the old time dances. I think I was born in the wrong era.

I had a quick walk around the house first to see who was dressed up there, and came across this lady who is a volunteer and was happy to have her photo taken. The light is quite low in the house, so I used the "put the window behind you technique" to get as much light as I could on the lady.

I've tried to give in an old fashioned feel with a touch of sepia and added grain. However if anyone can point me in the direction of some techniques for wartime type photos, it would be appreciated.

I took my camera on a trip to the shop to get some milk, and spotted the spider on the way, along with a good few others.
