Ottobre

Un tempo, era d'estate,

era a quel fuoco, a quegli ardori,

che si destava la mia fantasia.

Inclino adesso all'autunno

dal colore che inebria;

amo la stanca stagione

che ha già vendemmiato.

Niente più mi somiglia,

nulla più mi consola,

di quest'aria che odora

di mosto e di vino

di questo vecchio sole ottobrino

che splende nelle vigne saccheggiate.

(V. Cardarelli)

"October's charm lies in its contrasts—the warmth of the sun against the chill in the air, the bright hues of the leaves against the deepening sky, and the joy of gathering with loved ones against the backdrop of a world preparing for its winter slumber."

This view was taken from my front garden looking over the fields.

After trying to stay warm in my waders since about 3am, I figured that the high barometer had taken it's toll on any activity that may have taken place. The golden sun broke the horizon under bluebird sky's and dead calm breeze and it was time to hang it up this frosty morning. As I slowly waded away from the spillway toward the shoreline, I thought that one more try in the faster current couldn't hurt anything, so I took the biggest bluegill from my bait bucket (about 10" in length)and rigged it up. With a short lob cast, the bluegill hit the water and took off for open water like a shot. It didn't get but a few feet when the water boiled with a violent eruption as this beast turned that big Bluegill into breakfast. With my knees knocking and heart pounding at the sight of what just took place and what was about to happen, I took up the line slack and put the medium heavy St. Croix rod to the test. The big toothy critter felt the sting of the hook and took to the air like a Barracuda. After a battle of wits for about twenty minutes with the big Muskellunge, she gave in and a successful hand landing took place. The brute topped the scale at nearly 38 pounds and 52" in length. I did keep the Muskie, maybe out of pure excitement and the vision of fish fry's for the next several months. She was the last big Muskie that I removed from a body of water. That final day of October 1997 is burned so deep into my mind that when the leaves start to fall and the north winds begin to howl, I head for the waters to find the king of freshwater fish and partake in it's mystique.

October or Spring in the Southern Hemisphere is a time of renewal although this year the rains were late and only started once we arrived. This was taken the morning after a thunderstorm and heavy downpour and although the ground was still wet the new green grass had yet to grow.

This gave a lovely colour to the image which contrasts hugely with the "green" images that I normally post.

It was a beautiful morning for our walk yesterday. Pouring with rain today!

I think one of my favourite things about Halloween has to be the pumpkin seeds; I know you can buy them pre-ready, but there's just something about putting the effort in to dig them out of the pumpkin, clear and roast them that makes them taste so much better.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

The wind was still blowing so hard that it was difficult to hold the camera steady...

Lovely to see so many darters on the wing on a sunny day at Sutton Hoo! Most were in flight, but this Common Darter paused for a little while!

October sunshine bathed the park with such a melting light that it had the dimmed impressive look of a landscape by an old master. Leaves, one, two at a time, sidled down through the windless air.

Flags flying over the Value Village store on a gloomy day. It was a treasure hunting kind of day.

It's almost Halloween

And I'm not sure what I'll do,

Should I be a bat with one tooth

Or a ghost with just one boo?

Or maybe I'll be a skeleton

With one working boney foot,

Or maybe a tree with one leaf

Who is forced to forever stay put.

Or a witch with one big wart

Or a pumpkin with one large smile,

All of this sounds so strange

I should probably think a while.

It's October 1 and we spent the whole weekend working in the yard. Amazingly, there is a week of sun forecast. This bird has been a regular every day of the last month. Flicker, backyard Olympia.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Tigs meant to pose, honest, but you see there was a squirrel playing in the leaves and he just couldn't keep his eyes off the fun.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

I’ve noticed something while traveling… If you want to see and explore something interesting, don’t trust Google. No offense to google & social media platforms, but take out a map and explore. The old-fashioned way. On the feet with a map. I’m not a big fan of eating out and consider places where there’s only food dull. I could never understand people who get stuck at a restaurant for hours or overspend money on food. This is why when I travel for me, a place except food must have a significant history or interesting decor or entertainment!
