Apologies for not catching up with my flickr friends this week, it's been a bit fraught. I took this leafless tree at Toowong beside the Brisbane River as it's curly and fuzzy branches and twigs were a bit different. Goodness knows if it is dead or just deciduous. Otherwise it is just The Tree!

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

Most of my life I have overlooked birds, especially small ones. Then I got serious about photography. Photography gives us the unique ability to see small things in a way we never have able to before. Now I see these small birds in their exquisite detail and I can appreciate their tiny lives and their natural perfection. One can see the tiny patterns of the way their feathers lay. The rough durable feet with their tiny effective claws. The perfection of nature is so well displayed in a closeup photograph of a creature and the image can be studied and lingered over. The animal is seen in such a way that is impossible to see with just casual observation. This why I fell in love with photography, especially of wildlife. The photo offers a glimpse of life we normally don't see, an enhancement, an amplification that allows us to truly see something, maybe for the first time. This Titmouse is just as exquisite and perfect as a bald eagle. The perfection of nature and evolution is everywhere around us and a photograph captures the moment of time and perfection for us to view in a way we hardly ever can otherwise.

Otherwise known as Whisky Jacks, I awoke to their scratching around my table picking up peanuts before dawn. I quickly got up and tossed some more nuts on the table and hoped they would return upon sunrise so I could get some photos. They hung around in the pre-dawn hour and stayed until the sun came up. They disappeared not long after that.

An otherwise splendid Valesina form Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia) has suffered significant damage to her left forewing, partially hidden here by a convenient leaf. She's grabbing some supper near the central crossroads (crossrides?) of Cloud Wood nature reserve in North West Leicestershire.

This was my first visit to these woods, just a hasty late Sunday afternoon reconnaissance really, so seeing a beautiful Valesina for the first time was a big bonus even if she is no longer perfect.

The eclectus parrot, otherwise known as the king parrot, is one of my favourite tropical birds. This probably explains why I post so many shots of this beautiful bird. Indeed, my icon is a male, which is a striking green. I photographed this female eclectus during a visit to Vancouver's Boedel Conservatory. The photo was taken in June 2019, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

„The ravages of time gnaw at an iron post. The otherwise stable plastic cover is also powerless against the resulting rust.

Nevertheless, the resulting opening has something positive - after all, a little eight-legged friend has found a safe and dry home..."

„Der Zahn der Zeit nagt an einem Eisenpfosten. Gegen den hieraus resultierenden Rost ist auch die sonst so stabile Kunststoffhülle machtlos.

Dennoch hat die hieraus entstandene Öffnung durchaus auch etwas positives - hat doch ein kleiner achtbeiniger Freund ein sicheres und trockenes Zuhause gefunden…“

3D Printing

When repairing vintage cameras, I often use a 3D printer to design and fabricate replacement parts that are otherwise unavailable. Even after all this time, the intricate movements and precision of this machine fascinates me. I was printing a tiny 5mm wide hollow bushing for a camera I was servicing. I sat watching the printer form the part, layer by layer. I suddenly thought … “I need to photograph this because it’s something many have never seen!” I grabbed a camera and captured this image in the final seconds, just as the hot end of the printer withdrew from the finished print.

This is a 2-seat version and is used to give extremely expensive passenger rides.

I have mixed feelings about these modern, 2-seat conversions. Apart from a couple of one-off examples, there were no two-seaters during the war; your first flight in a Spitfire was strictly a solo affair. In the late 1940s, a small number of 2-seaters were manufactured (or converted Mk IXs) for the Indian and Irish Air Forces - about 17 in total. In recent years, several more, otherwise perfectly serviceable, Mk IXs have been butchered to make 2-seaters. The revenue from joyrides helps keeps the single seat aircraft flying. Even so, the T9s are my least favourite Spitfires to see, and I rarely photograph them.

This aircraft, MJ627, is a genuine war survivor and is known to have shot down an enemy aircraft. It appears to be one of the original batch converted for the Irish Air Force in 1950.

If you fancy a flight in the back seat of a Spitfire, be prepared to hand over about £3,000/$4,000 for a 30 minutes experience.

Like a vast lump of clay on a potters wheel, the Peña de Arties (1642m) marks a dramatic form for the otherwise open and sun filled Cinqueta valley high in the Spanish Aragon region. Seen from some angles, the mountain is like a giant's grave, and it is perhaps not surprising to find that witches are reputed to have lived watching over its northern wall from the village of Sin, and that multiple bronze age cromlechs rose high above its indubitable presence (witches as varied pagan expressions and not necessarily close to any modern caricature or medieval stigma).

Like a 'roche moutonnée that decided to be a small mountain', the land aside is perfectly pastoral and open to sun - an invitation to strong minded peoples. Just after the Peña de Arties are the well known open villages of Plan and Gistain.

The view is from the dirt track that rises and dog-legs behind the village of Saravillo.

These glass jars are illuminated by some light which makes the sight even more beautiful.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, otherwise known as Seville Cathedral. Originally conceived as a Mosque, work began in 1172. Allowing for the regular working naps known as siesta and the unfortunate habit of the dome collapsing onto surprised and presumably disappointed onlookers, construction in various major forms continued at a modest pace until 1903. Arguably, work continues today with the exterior being cleaned and maintained during my most recent visit in 2023.

To my mind the purpose of these epic and opulent god-barns was to install belief and fear by scale.

The Carina Nebula and Running Chicken Nebula from my Adelaide metro (Bortle 6) backyard. This is a combination of 13 stacked shots with a Optolong L-Pro filter and 1 shot with an Astronomik 12nm Ha filter as a luminance layer. Lots of issues, no lens collar meant I was getting trailing from differential flexure despite autoguiding. The light pollution meant even with the filter the blue channel was maxing out way too early. Horrible gradients over the frame (this is a crop). After huge amounts of adjustment the star colours are somewhat red. I will try the L-Pro again with a longer focal length (see if that stops the gradients) and will see if it helps when used without light pollution. Otherwise I am doing something very wrong here!

This is the Lesser Yellowlegs - Tringa flavipes - which is a medium-sized shorebird, it is similar in appearance to the larger Greater Yellowlegs but its bill is shorter (visually about the same length as the head) and the tail is more patterned. They mainly wade around in shallow waters of ponds, lakes and the shore eating insects, small fish and crustaceans. Breeding in North America and Canada, they nest on the ground, usually in open dry locations then they migrate to the Gulf coast of the United States, the Caribbean islands and South America. The Victoria and Albert Museum, otherwise known as the V&A, was founded in 1852, and today houses a permanent collection of over 2.3 million objects, focusing on decorative arts and design across 145 galleries. It has an unrivalled collection of sculpture, ceramics, furniture, textiles, jewellery and metalwork, but the building itself is also a remarkable example of great architecture. This image was captured on its second level, overlooking the Paul and Jill Ruddock Gallery, with the top of a glass cabinet reflecting the museum's geometric roof and skylight.

My main aim with this image was to convey the elegance of the building and the airy ambience from the light streaming through its roof, as well as the rich character of a gallery devoted to large-scale works that were once part of Renaissance buildings. I liked how the walkway and gallery were faintly visible through the glass, and how there was a glimpse in the distance of the tip of the 17th-century choir screen from the Cathedral of St John at Hertogenbosch.

Seven bracketed exposures were shot while the camera was resting on the glass cabinet, with the exposures then blended in Photoshop using luminosity masks. The midtones and shadows were geared towards the brighter exposures to produce a high-key finish, and darker exposures incorporated to preserve highlight information around the skylight and its reflection. Once the exposures were blended, I used the Pen Tool to isolate portions of the walls and the choir screen in the distance, and then brightened these with the higher exposures by applying radial and reflective gradient masks.

I tried to keep the colour-grading as straightforward as possible in order to convey the modernity and simplicity of the museum's architecture, and to keep the focus on the light itself and the way that the building's design seemed to allow light to cover every corner of its space smoothly and gracefully. Using Hue/Saturation layers, I reduced the yellows, reds and greens along the walls, and pushed towards a colder finish with hints of cyan in the shadows. There are traces of warmth in the highlights, and this was achieved by using the Apply Image function to layer-mask two Colour Balance adjustments, and by using a Gradient Map, both of which helped to create a faint split-toned finish. After this, I used two low-opacity Colour Lookups with the Bleach Bypass and Futuristic Bleak presets and set to Soft Light, which gently enhanced the image's overall contrast and added definition to the shutters across the skylight.

The final adjustments I made were in Colour and Silver Efex Pro, where I added a vignette and lowered the midtones in order to emphasise the image's tonality, and where I reduced the shadow structure in order to play up the location's clean lines and smooth textures. In a building with a collection of objects representing 5,000 years of creativity, there was something riveting, abstract and very straightforward about this vantage point.

The problem with this otherwise gift of a scene (taken late March 2024) was accommodating that lenticular cloud (right of centre) within my usual 3:1 aspect ratio.

In a perfect world, said cloud would have been a little lower in the sky. As it is, the only compromise was to go wide which, in turn, effectively distances that wonderful backdrop.

Wikepedia:

The Palace of Charles V is a Renaissance building in Granada, southern Spain, located on the top of the hill of the Assabica, inside the Nasrid fortification of the Alhambra. The building has never been a home to a monarch and stood roofless until 1957.[1][2]

The structure was commanded by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, who wished to establish his residence close to the Alhambra palaces. Although the Catholic Monarchs had already altered some rooms of the Alhambra after the conquest of the city in 1492, Charles V intended to construct a permanent residence befitting an emperor. The project was given to Pedro Machuca, an architect whose biography and influences are poorly understood. At the time, Spanish architecture was immersed in the Plateresque style, still with traces of Gothic origin. Machuca built a palace corresponding stylistically to Mannerism, a mode still in its infancy in Italy. The exterior of the building uses a typically Renaissance combination of rustication on the lower level and ashlar on the upper. Even if accounts that place Machuca in the atelier of Michelangelo are accepted, at the time of the construction of the palace in 1527 the latter had yet to design the majority of his architectural works.

Colorado Fall Light

In late September 2014 I was in Colorado for the fall color season. I photographed many places in and around McClure Pass, Ridgway, the Dallas Divide, Ouray, Aspen and Telluride and then some. This was my fourth year of doing so.

In the past, I'd shoot the fall colors in Jackson Hole, Wyoming but I have to admit that while the fall colors are really nice in Jackson Hole, you are truly missing great fall colors if you have not been to Colorado.
