This area is when you walk in the door to the closet. I didn't like walking into clothes, it felt confining. I used my cricut cutter to make this fun sign for my "store". Hopefully I will keep it organized now that it is a store... I used a fun pillow from Ballard Designs to pin my various pins on to keep them out so I will actually use them!

The Detroit Music Awards Foundation is a Michigan 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation, whose mission is to recognize Detroit area musicians working on a national, regional and local level. Its purpose is also to support and nurture the musical community in the Detroit metropolitan area, and to create a network for musicians that cuts across genres and styles.

The DMAF was chartered in 1988 by a distinguished group of Detroit music and media professionals. The fledgling group held its first award show in 1992 at Detroit's Music Hall, and moved to the State Theatre, its present location, in 1993. In 1998, the organization merged with the Metro Times-sponsored Detroit Music Awards. Now, the Detroit Music Awards Foundation is a single entity presenting the Detroit Music Awards each spring. In 2005, the ceremony was the opening event for the debut of the Motor City Music Conference (MC2)

DMAF awards are similar to the Grammy Awards presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Award winners are determined by local musicians and music industry professionals in southeast Michigan, and presented in ten music genres; Folk/Acoustic, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Country, Classical, Rock/Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop, Electronic and World. The DMA is the only local music awards in the nation to be presented by a not-for -profit organization. Voting is accomplished entirely via the internet.

Previous DMAF events have featured electrifying performances and guest appearances by some of Detroit's most glittering music legends: Was (Not Was), Eminem with D12, The Clark Sisters, Kid Rock, Martha Reeves, Smokey Robinson, Bob Seger, Glen Frey, The Miracles, Grand Funk Railroad, George Clinton and Parliament, and Ted Nugent, among many others. The annual award show also spotlights outstanding emerging local musicians.

Proceeds from emerging artist showcases throughout the year and the award show are used to present educational events and provide resources to local musicians. Through a partnership with ArtServe Michigan, health insurance is now also available to members.

The DMAF was proud to receive the Spirit of Detroit Award from the city of Detroit in 1993.

The Fort A.P. Hill Family took a day off from work to have some fun during Organization Day on May 22. The day kicked off with a Memorial Day flag-raising ceremony to honor those who have fallen in battle. Next was a 5-kilometer run and walk at Beaverdam Pond.

As the day unfolded there was a spirited kick ball competition, a fishing derby, a climbing wall, canoe races, horseshoes and a tug of war. There was also a great lunch of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad, chips and watermelon for dessert.

The culmination of the day was the dunking booth where garrison commander Lt. Col. Peter E. Dargle and Command Sgt. Maj. Keith R. Whitcomb took turns getting dunked. It was all for a good cause, those who threw the balls to dunk the command team donated canned goods and other items to the A.P. Hill Food Bank.

The National League of American Pen Women was founded in 1897. Realizing a need for an organization that would include women of the press, Marian Longfellow O'Donohue, niece of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, decided to create such an organization. Along with Margaret Sullivan Burke and Anna Sanborne Hamilton, she made plans for "bringing together women journalists, authors and illustrators for mutual benefits and the strength that comes of union".

On June 26, 1897, the three women brought together 17 writers, novelists, newspaper women, a teacher, a poet and an artist for the first meeting. Alice R. Morgan, an illustrator for New York publishers, designed the League insignia, the owl, symbolic of wisdom, placed in a triangle formed by a red pen, a blue pencil and a white brush, colors of the American flag.

The first National Convention was held in Washington, DC, in April, 1921, and the 300 women in attendance were received by President and Mrs. Warren G. Harding. Mrs. Harding was a distinguished member of The League, as was Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt.

In 1978, following its 80th birthday, The League was presented with the Literary Hall of Fame Award in recognition of its contribution to the cultural life of the United States Other recipients of the award have included Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Ariel and Will Durant and Charles Schulz.

The official League headquarters is the Pen Arts Building, built in 1895 and part of the Dupont Historical District in Washington, DC. Its most famous occupant was Robert Todd Lincoln, eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln. This 20 room mansion was purchased by The League in 1951 and was entered on the National Register of Historical Sites in 1978.

World Impact is a Christian missions organization dedicated to ministering God's love in the inner cities of America.

--

Since it's establishment in June of 1996, the Dallas ministry has sought to share the love of Christ with the community through Bible clubs for children, youth ministries, church planting, and leadership training for indigenous leaders.

--

History of World Impact

In 1965, Keith Phillips, a student at UCLA, began teaching Youth For Christ Bible clubs in Watts. He began recruiting BIOLA students to volunteer with him and the ministry to the urban poor grew. By 1971, God called Keith to full-time ministry and World Impact was incorporated. Full-time missionaries moved into the communities they served. Evangelism to children expanded to teens and whole families.

News of the ministry spread to other urban areas of the country and by 1972 World Impact was ministering in San Diego, California, and Wichita, Kansas. In 1975, Keith wrote about World Impact's experiences in They Dare to Love the Ghetto. In 1976, the St. Louis and Newark ministries began and World Impact moved into their present headquarters at 20th and Vermont in Los Angeles. In 1977, the Fresno ministry began.

During the 1970's, while retaining a strong emphasis on evangelism, World Impact became more intentional about discipleship. By 1981, Keith Phillips wrote The Making of a Disciple, still recognized as one of the seminal books on discipleship. Films depicting urban ministry, as well as urban ministry training materials, were developed.

In the early 1980's, World Impact started ministries to the whole person, while keeping its priority of evangelism and discipleship. In 1982, the Los Angeles Christian School was opened and Morning Star Ranch was acquired to disciple young men from the inner city. By 1984, World Impact began job training opportunities (Inner City Enterprises), a thrift shop (The Sonshine Shop), and the Newark Christian School, while writing a culturally-conducive "through-the-Bible" curriculum. Out of these experiences, Keith wrote No Quick Fix, explaining the need for ministry to the whole person and the importance of whole families.

In 1986, the Wichita Village property was acquired, from which the Good Samaritan Clinic was launched, an old Y.M.C.A building was remodeled for ministry in St. Louis, low-income housing was developed in Newark, and God provided THE OAKS camp, 65 miles north of Los Angeles. In 1988, the Chester, Pennsylvania, ministry opened, and ministry centers in San Diego and Fresno were remodeled.

During the 1980's, the efforts of evangelism and discipleship were bearing fruit and new believers were forming into worshiping communities, leading World Impact to plant culturally-relevant churches in the inner city. The massive numbers of immigrants from Central America and Asia, along with the growing numbers of urban poor, underscored the need to not only evangelize and disciple individuals, but to establish new churches among the poor. In 1990, church planting became the primary strategy to evangelize, equip, and empower the urban poor.

In the early 1990's, as national attention was focused on the inner-city during the Los Angeles riot, World Impact acquired Harmony Heart camp in Pennsylvania, began ministry in Oakland and San Francisco, opened schools in Watts and Chester, launched The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) and planted its first churches in various cities.

In 1996, World Impact celebrated its 25th anniversary as Deer Creek camp (outside Denver) and the Dallas ministry were added. Keith Phillips wrote about World Impact's emerging church planting ministry in Out of Ashes. In 1999, World Impact hosted the first of three conferences on urban church planting, called Crowns of Beauty, each of which welcomed over 1200 international delegates.

In 2000, World Impact began hosting its School for Urban Cross-Cultural Church Planting, training urban church plant teams from all over the nation. In 2001, The John Mark Curriculum was published to train cross-cultural missionaries and three TUMI satellite campuses were opened. By 2004, 20 churches had been planted in eight World Impact cities, and an auditorium at THE OAKS Adult Conference Center was completed, dedicated in honor of board member Dr. Jack Hayford.

The World Health Organization recommends that all pregnant women attend a minimum of four antenatal care visits with a trained health care provider and that a number of key services be provided at those visits. However, there are large inequities in access, adherence, and quality of antenatal care between and within regions and countries. In order to meet the needs of all pregnant women and newborns – by diagnosing and treating infections, screening for anemia and nutrition deficiencies, addressing malaria in pregnancy, and preventing HIV transmission, among other services – the global health community must come together to identify innovative solutions for improving access, content, and quality of antenatal care around the world. Join us as we host a policy dialogue focused on delivering quality antenatal care with a focus on low-resource settings.

I organize my fabric scraps that are significatly smaller than a fat quarter in one of these two bins. The bin on the left was picked up several years ago at TJ Maxx and holds my larger scraps that I think I might use later. The smaller bucket I made about 5 years ago with fabric from IKEA. This holds my much smaller pieces (think small squares and strips) that I most likely will use in foundation paper piecing, or small patchwork projects. I try to go through these frequently now to keep the clutter down.

A photograph showing an Ancient Order of United Workmen Shannonville membership ribbon sewn in a quilt. The Ancient Order was a fraternal society with insurance benefits, similar to the Foresters.

According to Bruce, the Hall was built in 1885. In December 19, 1891, Emma Maud Lake (widow of Myron B. Lake) sold for $1.00 part of lot 6 to Samuel Geddes, Mathew Hill and Archibald D. Walker, the trustees for the Shannonville Lodge of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, no. 301. Arthur Exley (Bruce's maternal grandfather) and John Exley (Bruce's maternal Uncle).

The lodge ribbon was pieced into a quilt top by Bruce's maternal grandmother, Anne Exley (nee Doughton). The ribbon probably belonged to one of the former members/trustees, which is now preserved in a quilt owned by Bruce's son, Cameron B. Portt.
