In the collection of the Finnish Appelo Archives Center in Naselle, Washington.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Appelo Archives Center was opened under the Wahkiakum Community Foundation in 2005. It became its own 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization in April 2010. The dream of founder Carlton Appelo, the Appelo Archives Center was opened as a place to share the rich history of the Naselle-Grays River Valley [of southwest Washington] and its surrounding areas.
The Appelo Archives Center is dedicated to encouraging the study of region-wide history by preserving collections, sponsoring community and educational activities, facilitating genealogical research, and fostering Scandinavian studies, with an emphasis on Finnish-American heritage.
MUSEUM
The Archives Center's main room upstairs houses our local museum and research area for the communities from Grays River through Naselle. We've also got a genealogy corner where you can relax and look up your family history or browse census records from years past.
Downstairs you enter the Museum through either the Archives Cafe and Bookstore or through the front door into our Logging Heritage Room. There is a chair lift available that allows handicap access to the upstairs and the rest of the museum and libraries
C.A. & AGNES APPELO MEMORIAL LIBRARY
The Library has a collection of over 400 books to be used for research and browsing. The book collection is located in the newly renovated library area The library is named for C.A. and Agnes Appelo who operated stores in several locations for decades. C.A. and his son, Carlton, were instrumental in bringing telephone service to the area and the founders of Wahkiakum West Telco, the local telephone company. Agnes worked in the stores and regularly traveled the logging trains to sell goods to the women in the camps.
Her son, Carlton, has also collected books on history for a good part of his 90 years. The library books are available for research on local and national history to our members. A full section with Finnish language books is also available in our Finnish Library.
FINNISH LIBRARY
Catering to the local Finnish and Scandinavian heritage our Finnish Library contains over 600 books, including the Socialist "Red Books". Many books are in English as well as Finnish, and contain political history, music, arts, local history and children's stories and much more. We've also got a display case that houses our Finnish costumes including the Expatriot Costume, designed by local ladies, that represents Finnish Immigrants and their descendants worldwide.
Week of January 8-14, 2017
Organization is my word for this year. Beginning to organize the house after Christmas.
Sort, contain and label...Re Ment storage in the Nook.
Drawer holds plastic craft containers (purchased at Walmart) of re ment. Used dymo tape to label containers and color coded as follows, pink= kitchen items, yellow=food items, green=home decor and bath.
Bigger boxes (made by Paperchase/purchased at Borders) hold larger, boxed furniture and are stored on shelves. Pink photo boxes hold larger loose miniatures and other craft supplies.
Its been a while since I've posted any pictures of my (our) Lego building studio.
Last year, the room was completely renovated. Originally, the room was built as part of a house extension in 1985 to enclose a hot tub and shower. Since owning the house, we used the hot tub only a few years until we shut it down and converted the room into a playroom. The playroom then evolved into a family Lego studio. During this time, we built storage and work spaces around the hot tub. This of course resulted in inefficient use of space and inconvenient accessibility.
Finally, in 2018 we embarked on a much needed renovation. This involved removal of the hot tub and infrastructure, followed by new floor joists and framing. The shower was converted into a storage closet and the entire room received new tiled floor with under floor heating system.
Of the best attributes of this studio is abundant natural light emanating from large floor to ceiling windows and three overhead skylights. For nighttime use, the room is illuminated from ceiling mounted track lighting and a series of adjustable gooseneck LED worklights fitted along the entire length of the work spaces.
Lastly, a custom centre island was constructed from 2x Ikea Kalax storage units. The units were bolted together, a table top surface was installed (with bullnose edges) and heavy duty castor wheels were fitted to the bottom. This centre island not only incorporates integrated storage but serves as an immensely useful worksurface for staging models, sorting parts, or collaboration.
Storage and parts organization is a topic for another day. Suffice to say, we use Ikea Trofast drawers for bulk parts storage of major colours. We use wall mounted Kalax units (not shown) for less used colours, the island Kalax units store monochrome colour detail parts (e.g. slopes, round bricks, etc.), and finally the workspaces are completely surrounded by many 100's of small parts bins organized by part type and also colour if applicable. All storage is labelled using custom python software scripts which generate part thumbnails, part descriptions etc. and automatically lays out label graphics for a variety of Avery brand label sheets of different sizes.
It is a wonderful space to spend time being creative and having fun! Now I just need time to enjoy it!

The "office" side of my home office. Shelving by elfa, various storage bins and boxes. The blue paper boxes are really nice and are from The Container Store. The large gray file boxes are some generic things from an office supply store. The four small white bins are actually ice cube bins! I use them for iPod stuff, phone stuff, camera stuff, and small tools (all labeled as such).

I'm taking everything out of the Lego room in order to put in a loft bed. This is the start, but it still seems like I've hardly put a dent in getting stuff out. Space is definitely a factor in Lego collecting.
I am a craft magazine addict so instead of trying to find a creative solution to organize ALL my years of issues, I keep only my favorites. The rest I cut up with an Exacto knife. I cut out the pages that I want to save for later and organize them by subject in binders full of page protectors. The sections of my binders are organized by jewelry, interior design, holidays, etc.
The very first original all-purpose Organization 13 coat made by Saeru, modeled here by dual_wielder a.k.a. Harl (with her own Roxas wig) at Anime Expo 2008. (You can see more shots from this night - including the Deep Dive fight scene - here = www.cosplay.com/shoot/134374/)
Originally built in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club, a luxury men's club for members of the Shrine organization, the club fell victim to the stock-market crash and was forced to close its doors in 1934. InterContinental Hotels bought the property in 1988, and immediately began renovations. A quarter of a billion dollars and 12 years later, this truly magnificent hotel was re-introduced to Chicago.
Restoration work was guided by the original athletic club's 1930 yearbook, the SCIMITAR, donated by a club member. Its black-and-white photographs were used to duplicate and restore entire rooms, right down to the detailing in draperies, carpets and murals. Today, each floor of the hotel represents a myriad of cultures and eras. The public areas available for viewing provide a glimpse of the rich history of the building.

Odd Fellows Hall, 530 Main Street Vacaville, California. Plaque on the Odd Fellows Hall, 530 Main Street, Vacaville, California. The Vacaville Odd Fellows Lodge No. 83 was chartered in 1859 as one of Vacaville's oldest fraternal organizations. They re-built this structure of brick and cast-iron columns in 1889, the previous two buildings having burned in 1877 and 1884. The earthquake of 1892 seriously damaged the front of the building. The Odd Fellows still own the building, and rent the storefronts to maintain the meeting hall on the second floor.
You've got to love it when organization and uncluttering means that you get to go and buy stuff! Have been slowly, very slowly, working through all the rooms in the house. The kitchen is only the second and will be the one that gets done in between the others because there is the rare week that you can keep the kitchen torn up and because the stuff at the Container Store is not cheap!
Blurry view of my "office" side, but you can see the rolling file cabinet. I tried to keep almost everything off the floor so my toddler can play while I'm working, and I don't have to worry about her getting into too much trouble.
A simple solution to a minor problem: How to organize your Lego bricks for efficient building.

From a California Office of Emergency Services (OES) Fire and Rescue History and Organization document:
"Cal OES S.H.A.R.P.S. UNIT (Special Hose and Relay Pump System)
The Cal OES S.H.A.R.P.S. is a specially-designed unit with unique features and operating characteristics. The unit was specifically designed and equipped to supplement and eventually replace the Cal OES 6" aluminum pipe program. The SHARPS is equipped with sufficient adapters and fittings to be totally compatible with existing Cal OES pipe and standard fire department screw threads. The S.H.A.R.P.S. unit carries large diameter, 5" quick-coupling, lightweight fire hose. At present, one mile of the 5" hose is carried. The tractor houses a 1,000 GPM pump, with two portable 1,500 GPM pumps carried on the trailer. The total pumping capacity is 4.000 GPM]."
OES 200 was assigned to the Sacramento Fire Department and initially housed at Station 7 in Valley Hi (South Sacramento) before eventually ending up at the new Station 3 (ex-Natomas FPD). As far as I know, it is no longer in service.

Interesting view of four young men, rather boys, who have taken up arms for the Reich. The caps are military, but the uniforms are not official. They seem to have M1841 Dreyse rifles with them, but the picture can be of a much later date, although I would not say it is post 1918.

In the early days of color television there used to be a joke that NTSC stood for "Never Twice the Same Colors". For those unfamiliar with the subject, NTSC stands for National Television Standards Committee, an organization that was set up in 1940 in the U.S. to set color TV standards for North America.
Of course, the Europeans (except the French) went with the Phase Alternating Line (PAL) standard so they could be different from the Americans, and the French invented the Séquentiel couleur à mémoire (French for "Sequential Color with Memory") standard, or SECAM, so they could be different from the Europeans, but not the same as the Americans.
At any rate, I have an imitation Tiffany Dragonfly lamp that reminds me of NTSC. This is one of my test subjects, since it offers so many colors. So I have taken a lot of pictures of this lamp.
But depending on the camera, lens, angle of view, and the time of the day, every image comes out just a little bit differently. Although all the images look very similar, I have never gotten two images exactly the same.
But the M240 gave me yet another interpretation. The M240 image is nice by itself, but it certainly deviates more from the other images. Tweaking the WB could not get the colors closer to the other images.
Below are some comparisons.
Falls of Clyde is the last surviving iron-hulled, four-masted full-rigged ship, and the only remaining sail-driven oil tanker. Designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1989, she is now a museum ship in Honolulu, but has deteriorated to poor condition and is not open to the public. In September 2008, ownership was transferred to a new nonprofit organization which intends to restore her.

Rome is the capital city and a special comune of Italy (named Comune di Roma Capitale). Rome also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. With 2,872,800 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi), it is also the country's most populated comune. It is the fourth most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. It is the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, which has a population of 4,355,725 residents, thus making it the most populous metropolitan city in Italy. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. The Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states.
Rome's history spans 28 centuries. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe. The city's early population originated from a mix of Latins, Etruscans, and Sabines. Eventually, the city successively became the capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, and is regarded by some as the first ever metropolis. It was first called The Eternal City (Latin: Urbs Aeterna; Italian: La Città Eterna) by the Roman poet Tibullus in the 1st century BC, and the expression was also taken up by Ovid, Virgil, and Livy. Rome is also called the "Caput Mundi" (Capital of the World). After the fall of the Western Empire, which marked the beginning of the Middle Ages, Rome slowly fell under the political control of the Papacy, and in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. Beginning with the Renaissance, almost all the popes since Nicholas V (1447–1455) pursued over four hundred years a coherent architectural and urban programme aimed at making the city the artistic and cultural centre of the world. In this way, Rome became first one of the major centres of the Italian Renaissance, and then the birthplace of both the Baroque style and Neoclassicism. Famous artists, painters, sculptors and architects made Rome the centre of their activity, creating masterpieces throughout the city. In 1871, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, which, in 1946, became the Italian Republic.
Rome has the status of a global city. In 2016, Rome ranked as the 14th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. Its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The famous Vatican Museums are among the world's most visited museums while the Colosseum was the most popular tourist attraction in world with 7.4 million visitors in 2018. Host city for the 1960 Summer Olympics, Rome is the seat of several specialized agencies of the United Nations, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The city also hosts the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) as well as the headquarters of many international business companies such as Eni, Enel, TIM, Leonardo S.p.A., and national and international banks such as Unicredit and BNL. Its business district, called EUR, is the base of many companies involved in the oil industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and financial services. Rome is also an important fashion and design centre thanks to renowned international brands centered in the city. Rome's Cinecittà Studios have been the set of many Academy Award–winning movies.

The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are a set of steps in Rome, Italy, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top.
The monumental stairway of 174 steps (the slightly elevated drainage system is often mistaken for the first step) was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy, and the Trinità dei Monti church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, both located above — to the Holy See in Palazzo Monaldeschi located below. The stairway was designed by architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi.
Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fontana_della_Barcaccia
The Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Boat) is a Baroque-style fountain found at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome's Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square). Pope Urban VIII commissioned Pietro Bernini in 1623 to build the fountain as part of a prior Papal project to erect a fountain in every major piazza in Rome. The fountain was completed between 1627 and 1629 by Pietro possibly along with the help of his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini, especially after his father's death in August 29, 1629.
The sculptural fountain is made into the shape of a half-sunken ship with water overflowing its sides into a small basin. The source of the water comes from the Acqua Vergine, an aqueduct from 19 BCE. Bernini built this fountain to be slightly below street level due to the low water pressure from the aqueduct. Water flows from seven points of fountain: the center baluster; two inside the boat from sun-shaped human faces; and four outside the boat.
According to legend, as River Tiber flooded in 1598, water carried a small boat into the Piazza di Spagna. When the water receded, a boat was deposited in the center of the square, and it was this event that inspired Bernini's creation. The fountain is decorated with the papal coat of arms of the Barberini family as a reminder of Pope Urban VIII's ancestry.

Chief among my many personal failings is an inability to return phone, text, and email messages within a time framed deemed "socially acceptible." Its not necessarily because I don't want to communicate with the people who are trying to communicate with me. Its just that I'm often in private negotiation with my thoughts. My thoughts are are jealous succubi. They demand my exclusive attention for indefinite stretches of time. Even still, I do my best to escape their surly gravity and return an orphaned email every now and again.
I received one such email from the gentleman pictured above, Philip Lauri. He intimated that he enjoyed what I was doing with The People of Detroit, wanted to feature it on the website for his social branding organization Detroit Lives!, and he suggested we meet to discuss doing something collaboratively.
Well, much like Jesus and Ja-Rule, I may not always come when you call... but I'm always on time. A mere 132 days later, the collaboration has happened in earnest as represented by this photo. The photograph was taken near Phil's place in the beautifully tree-lined Woodbridge neighborhood in Detroit.
But wait, there's more.
I applied for a business acceleration program with the Detroit Creative Corridor. This photo was taken on the eave of the official announcement of who had been selected for the program.
It came up in conversation that Phil applied for the same program. Although I knew I'd been accepted to the program at the time, the program organizers made me swear to keep a secret until the official announcement. That conversation went something like this:
Me: Hey, have you heard about DC3 business accelerator program?
Phil: Yea, I applied.
Me: Me to.
Phil: Yea.
Me: Yea...
Well, I guess Phil was sworn to secrecy also. As it turns out, we were both accepted along with 15 others to be part of the inaugural group of participants in this business development program for creatives. If you have a chance, come out to the program launch event.
I'm looking forward to working with everyone in this program and I'm thoroughly pleased that such a program exists. In a climate where the national, international and - most disappointingly - local art establishment is all too eager to support creative endeavors that peddle trite images of a dour, haggard, toothless Detroit; DC3 has chosen to support creatives in Detroit who not only imagine a better future but revel in a wonderful now.
Which isn't to underestimate the immense challenges that confront the city. Its more to say, "enough, already." Those challenges - and the people who have failed them - have been celebrated so relentless as to force the impression that they are the only aspect of reality in Detroit that is acceptably authentic.
That's simply not the got damn truth.
The truth is that in direct proportion to this place's challenges stands opportunity. Folks like Phil are proof of that. The DC3 program is proof of that. The fact that downtown Detroit's population has experienced a 59 percent increase in college-educated people younger than 35-years-old is proof of that (Woodbridge is adjacent to the downtown/Midtown area).
These people, programs, and population increases aren't happening at some indistinct point in an amorphous future. They are happening right now.
They are just as much a part of Detroit as the broken buildings and broken spirits put forth by less comprehensive thinkers as authentically Detroit.
And with that, if you'll excuse me, I have some emails to return.

1917 Lithograph certificate by H.A. Thomas & Wylie (#51212) certifying Guilford's Lucy F. Chittenden as a "...member of the American Flag House and Betsey Ross Memorial Association and a subscriber to the Endowment Fund for the preservation of the Historic House in which the First Flag of the United States of America was made and for the erection of a National Memorial in honor of Betsey Ross. The names of all the Subscribers are placed on the Roll of Hono and preserved in the Archives of the Association."
The document is finely printed in formal B&W script with a fine color image (Chas. H. Weisgerber's painting "Birth of Our Nation's Flag,") of Betsey displaying the flag to Washington, George Ross & Robert Morris. There is a red seal of the organization and printed signatures of the organization's President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. To raise funds to purchase Ross's house (at 239 or 241 Arch St. in Philadelphia), the organization sold these ten-cent subscriptions to the American Flag House and Memorial Association.
