Hand-crank power is used to crack open the hand-picked, sun-dried, mountain-grown, arabica coffee berries. (You can call them beans if you want to, but most things called beans grow on vines, and these things grow on trees.) People who (unlike me) actually like coffee tell me that the coffee from the highlands of Papua New Guinea tastes good.
I took this pic of the (organic) garden I started in my backyard. This is the very beginning of it, so all of the plants are pretty small.
The plants in this picture are all pepper plants - Jalapeno, Green Bell Pepper, Orange Bell Pepper and Red Bell Pepper
Research technician, Lindsy Ramo (15), spraying vegetables with an organic pesticide at Montemarte Farm.
Local pesticides are being trialled to help vegetables grow in the off-season.
Traditionally in Vanuatu vegetables are only planted from March to September and those that are planted in the off-season are susceptible to pests. The trials at Montemarte Farm are trying to overcome this problem by carrying out research in organic pesticides, trying to find local treatments to kill pests during the off season.
They are trailing four different types, Papaya leaf, Gliricidia leaf, Ginger and Dipel derived from bacteria in the soil. Montemarte Farm, Port Vila, Vanuatu.

SAUVIE ISLAND, Ore. – Operating an organic vegetable farm requires hard work and strategic planning. Just ask Brian Wood, farm manager for Sauvie Island Organics, located about 15 miles north of downtown Portland. Brian and his crew operate a thriving Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program on the farm, which has served fresh produce to the Portland community since 1993. Over the years, staff with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) have worked with Sauvie Island Organics to provide financial incentives and conservation assistance. NRCS on-farm projects include installing a seasonal high tunnel and integrating cover crops and crop rotations into the growing schedule. NRCS photos by Tracy Robillard.

I just came across these files on my computer at work and thought I'd share. Back when I was first hired at my present company, I spent some time just learning to use my team's product, IDL. I had just read about Alan Turing's Reaction-Diffusion algorithm for morphogenesis, which neatly explains and simulates how natural patterns such as fingerprints, and animals' spots and stripes come to be. So I implemented and started experimenting with variations on it. I really wanted to use it to generate leopard spots (I know it has been done), but I couldn't find or figure out the specifics to make that work.
This is the same algorithm I made this with.
Here I have the algorithm tuned to favor narrow, well-define stripes, and just zoom in and rotate slightly between iterations of the simulation. You can see when a stripe becomes fatter than it prefers, it tends to split down the middle. Aside from the original conditions (a frame of random noise), the algorithm is 100% deterministic. The random appearance even late in the simulation is just due to the chaotic (yet interestingly regular) nature of the algorithm.
A mass of puparia of Phoridae: or coffin flies. These flies burrowed down to find the human bodies and laid their eggs on them. The larvae hatched out and fed on the bodies before pupating. The new flies then emerged through the round holes in their cases.

Vince adds our organic wastes to the compost bin. This bin produces about a 5 gallon bucket of rich soil a year.

Made during the Jana's Organics master class. The colors I chose were much too 'loud', but the shape turned out nice I think.
