Our definition of organic farming recognises the direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced.
Organic farming methods offer the best, currently available, practical model for addressing climate-friendly food production. This is because it is less dependent on oil-based fertilisers and pesticides and confers resilience in the face of climatic extremes.
It also stores higher levels of carbon in the soil, and as a result if organic farming was common practice in the UK, we could offset at least 23% of agriculture's current greenhouse emissions.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), which may cause cancer upon contact or inhalation, can be a grave danger to people around the world and even cause a potential ecological crisis.
One of the largest single-location POP stocks in the world is in a storage site in Kocaeli, Turkey .
Disposal of POP stocks is complicated and expensive. Not all POPs can be treated and disposed of the same way and destroying them must be done carefully to avoid additional contamination risks to the environment around the storage sites.

all in all, a good outing.

We are providing hand wrapped around organic pinto beans, rice, veggies and cheese in our mild Mexican sauce. Walked past this organic farm today, and it reminded us very much of the TV series Darling Buds of May. Chickens and ducks were roaming free, and looking very happy with their lot. Farm machinery was haphazardly parked up, and we fully expected Pop Larkin to appear any minute and invite us in for some nosh and booze.......!

I had another fine early season hike on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge and brought back a few photos to commemorate the outing. This time, I hiked the Coyote Wall trail. It's sure starting to look a lot like Spring out there!
A vermicomposting bucket is mixed with food waste and worms. Several different species of worms such as Canadian nightcrawlers, red wigglers or earthworms are excellent at decomposing organic waste products and turn those throwaway food scraps, paper or yard waste into compost as beneficial soil amendments. Compost is the key to organic farming and researchers at MU's Bradford Research Center in Columbia are looking at ways to make this style of food production more efficient and affordable.

Stinging nettle pesto:
1 cup of steamed stinging nettle from our garden
1/2 cup of organic pine nuts
1/3 cup of organic extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoon of minced organic garlic
These are worms from an organic compost pit, which the ChildFund in India project helped establish through a local women's Self Help Group. The women sell the compost and worms to farmers and at the local market.
When we arrived at the compost pit, one of the woman had been waiting with the worms in her hands. After we had finished taking photos, she shrieked and chucked the worms back in the pit and ran to wash her hands - all the children were giggling.
