One of the many 'official guides' or 'handbooks' issued under the auspices of almost every UK local authority duringt he Twentieth Century and that included details of local administration, services, amenities and industries for both residents, visitors and prospective residents and investors. It is fair to say that this splendidly honest cover, showing the two main industries of the Yorkshire UDC of Rawmarsh, was not particularly aimed at holidaymakers!
The town, adjacent to the River Don, and situated close to Rotherham, into which borough it was amalgamated in the 1974 local government reorganisation, and was unashamedly built on coal, steel and chemicals. The major employer was the large Park Gate Iron & Steel Company, whose many products included colliery roof supports - important to the other major extractive industry. The works would continue to expand during the mid-20th Century with the development of the adjacent Aldwarke site. Another major steel company was that of Wm. Oxley of the Park Gate Steel Works.
The guide includes some photos of the town that show the trolleybus overhead of the rather unusual local undertaking the Mexborough & Swinton Traction Company (they had abandoned the word Tramways in the title when they converted the system in c1927) and the wholly single deck fleet continued in operation until 1961 when motor buses were substituted. It was the first and last private company to operate trolleybuses in the UK.
The cover is remarkably bold - the iron & steel works in the background, the colliery and colliers in the forground and even the telephone wires and gas lamps are silhouetted!

I have looked at a bunch of DNA test results, and there are usually two main breeds and traces of 5 other breeds. Julia has NO TRACES of anything else... she is a pure mix :-)

Naoshima is a small fishing island off the southern Japan coast on the Seto Inland Sea, between Honshu and Shikoku, within eyeshot of the city of Takamatsu.
During the 1990s, the Benesse Corporation, a Japanese textbook publisher, partnered with architect Tadao Ando to create Benesse Art Site Naoshima, a series of spectacular contemporary art museums designed around the theme of "Nature and Art." (There's a nice summary of the place here.)
Shrewdly, they also built the museums with hotel rooms in which visitors can stay.
No less shrewdly, we stayed. It was superb.

The c1950 official guide to the small Lancashire town of Mossley - notoriously difficult to date as are many of these official guide or handbooks but some clues in the adverts in this case lean towards this mid-century period. It isn't a large booklet this as Mossley had only a population of some 11,000 and it is situated in the steep valley site of the River Tame in the Pennine Hills to the east of Manchester. The town, like several other adjacent localities, had a complex administrative past as it was, prior to the 1885 creation of the Borough Council and its situation within the old County of Lancashire, situated in three counties - Lancashire, the West Riding of Yorkshire and Cheshire. Under the 1974 local government reorganisation it was annexed into the new Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester.
The town's prosperity was largely built on textiles, woll but especially cotton and this link with Lancashire is shown in the coat of arms - the red rose of the county and the cotton plant.
She's pretty small but definitely knows how to scratch on the backdoor window to let me know there's no grub left on the balcony. So of course I break my neck to hurry up and put seeds out because afterall I wouldn't want to keep her waiting. Can you spell s-u-c-k-e-r? :)

Lucifer is a multinational Heavy Rock band from Stockholm. Founded in 2014 in Berlin by The Oath front woman Johanna Sadonis, the group first consisted of Cathedaral, Angel Witch and Ladytron members. The first 7” Single ‘Anubis’ and debut album ‘Lucifer I’, penned by Sadonis and Cathedral’s Garry Jennings and released by British label Rise Above Records, brought Lucifer international recognition. The band completed their line-up with Swede Robin Tidebrink from the band Saturn on second lead guitar. Lucifer has been touring the world including Europe, USA, Canada and Japan.
Lucifer’s is defined by their very heavy 1970s Hard Rock sound spiced with a good dose of Proto Heavy Metal and Doom Rock. Main influences are groups such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Öyster Cult, Lucifer’s Friend, Steppenwolf, 70’s Heart and Fleetwood Mac.
With a shift of constellation within the band in 2016 and Johanna Sadonis’ move from Berlin to Stockholm, Lucifer were ready for chapter two. In Nicke Andersson, notable for his groups The Hellacopters, Entombed, Imperial State Electric, Death Breath among others, Sadonis found a new renowned writing partner. Together they wrote Lucifer’s second album ‘Lucifer II’ and produced it at Nicke’s studio The Honk Palace in Stockholm in the summer of 2017. The album was mixed by Swedish producer Ola Ersfjord at Cuervo Recording Services in Madrid.
With the critically acclaimed release of their long awaited second album ‘Lucifer II’ on Century Media on July 6th 2018 and the videos for their new singles ‘California Son’ and ‘Dreamer’, Lucifer is facing a new grand chapter. The album immediately jolted into the Swedish, German, British and American charts and received outstanding worldwide attention.
This year Lucifer played a number of international festivals like The KISS Kruise, Psycho Las Vegas, Hellfest, Desertfest, the long standing German cult TV program Rockapalast to name but a few and embarked on many European dates. Lucifer is now planning to return to Japan and the USA again this winter. With freshly recruited lead guitar players Martin Nordin and Linus Björklund, and the Austrian Alexander Mayr on bass, the band is ready to climb Mount Olympus of Rock.

The ever perspicacious Coco pulls out a piece of impedimenta from some 23 years ago that might have been designed for this moment: if only the Evading Standards had a decent editorial policy that minded the people of our fair city rather than the interests of a the powerful. Still, as it ever was... the papers are there to manifest the interests of them what own and not those of their readership...
Some of them papers are better than others, natch:
"Her legacy is of public division, private selfishness and a cult of greed, which together shackle far more of the human spirit than they ever set free."
