To get this shot, good, bad or indifferent, I laid down flat in the road, without thought or consideration, across a narrow bridge, no railings. It's official. I'm addicted. There is no hope left for me now...

Kirribilli House is the secondary official residence of the Prime Minister of Australia. Located in the Sydney harbourside suburb of Kirribilli, New South Wales, the house is at the far eastern end of Kirribilli Avenue. It is one of two official Prime Ministerial residences, the primary official residence being The Lodge in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. The house, gardens and grounds are listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List.
Port Jackson, consisting of the waters of Sydney Harbour, Middle Harbour, North Harbour and the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers, is the natural harbour of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The harbour is an inlet of the Tasman Sea (part of the South Pacific Ocean). It is the location of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The location of the first European settlement and colony on the Australian mainland, Port Jackson has continued to play a key role in the history and development of Sydney. Port Jackson, in the early days of the colony, was also used as a shorthand for Sydney and its environs. Many recreational events are based on or around the harbour itself particularly the Sydney New Year's Eve celebrations and the starting point of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The waterways of Port Jackson are managed by the Roads & Maritime Services. Sydney Harbour National Park protects a number of islands and foreshore areas, swimming spots, bushwalking tracks and picnic areas. 14701
I was heading toward Tegel Airport to try and capture some skylight trails, when I happened upon this abandoned office chair next to the wall of this walk way. So I positioned the chair in the middle and took an LE shot as quite frankly, it reminded me of those modern Asian Ghost movies, those ones that are actually scary and well acted, unlike the Western crap we get today.
I had to reduce the contrast light considerably to take out the background, which hopefully I've done and haven't compromised the image too far, so let me know what you think. Unfortunately, directly behind the chair and up a bit, there was this big, bright red side panel of a balcony that really screwed up my composition; hopefully that is now hidden. I guess this is a bit of unexpected fun, but certainly another for the Dark City Deutschland collection!
The weekend is here my dear friend, enjoy and have a good one, so as always, thank you! :)

It is now official that 2019 has been a bonanza Painted Lady butterfly season in Britain. Butterfly Conservation uses a wide variety of recording techniques to get as broad a picture as possible of how our butterfly (and moth) species are doing. One of these is the annual Big Butterfly Count aimed very much at people who may have at least a general interest in wildlife and the environment.
Results from the Big Butterfly Count have now been collated. Top of the chart was, you guessed it, Painted Lady with a stunning 420,841 counted. This was almost 30 times greater than the PL count in the equivalent 2018 survey!
With a major change downhill in the weather forecast for this weekend, let's celebrate this rare good news wildlife story with one last 2019 look at the much loved Painted Lady butterfly.

The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain; However, the royal family does not live there, but rather in the Zarzuela Palace, which is why it is used for state ceremonies and solemn events.
With an area of 135,000 m² and 3,418 rooms (almost double that of Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Versailles, it is the largest royal palace in Western Europe and one of the largest in the world. It houses a valuable historical heritage- artistic, highlighting the set of musical instruments known as the Stradivarius Palatinos, and very relevant collections of other disciplines such as painting, sculpture and tapestry. The State rooms and artistic ,collections are open to visits as long as there are no official events.
The palace was built by order of King Philip V, on the site left by the Royal Alcázar, almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1734. Both the foundations of the old fortress and some of its structures were used for the construction of the new palace. The fire episode served to justify the replacement of the old building with a palace in accordance with the taste of the time. Its construction began in 1738, according to plans by the architect Filippo Juvara, who proposed a larger palace, but in a different location. When Juvara died, the project was entrusted to his disciple Juan Bautista Sachetti, who was required to adapt Juvara's plans to the site of the old Alcázar. Other distinguished Spanish architects such as Ventura Rodríguez participated and were trained in the quarry of the new palace; the configuration of the Royal Chapel is due to him. Francesco Sabatini was in charge of the completion of the building, as well as secondary renovation, expansion and decoration works. Charles III was the first monarch to continuously inhabit the palace.

A London Transport Official's plate. This is an early example, issued to senior inspectors and other officials for central area (red) buses, trams and trolleybuses. They were around into the early 1990s, although nearly all with four figure numbers. It's unusual to see a three figure number on a plate, much less two.
Their is a clip on the back and could be worn in a buttonhole, but was usually kept in a wallet and used to identify the individual to staff or those in charge at incidents, especially as the holder of this plate may always be in plain clothes.
Long phased out there are some London Buses plates still in use which look similar apart from the wording - and are in red lettering.
I gave this photo a colour boost to highlight the wording and number.
The Winter Palace was the official residence of the Russian Emperors from 1732 to 1917. Today, the palace and its precincts form the Hermitage Museum. Situated between Palace Embankment and Palace Square, in Saint Petersburg, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917, as depicted in Soviet propaganda art and Sergei Eisenstein's 1927 film October, became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.
As completed, the overriding exterior form of the Winter Palace's architecture, with its decoration in the form of statuary and opulent stucco work on the pediments above façades and windows, is Baroque. The exterior has remained as finished during the reign of Empress Elizabeth. The principal façades, those facing the Palace Square and the Neva river, have always been accessible and visible to the public. Only the lateral façades are hidden behind granite walls, concealing a garden created during the reign of Nicholas II. The building was conceived as a town palace, rather than a private palace within a park, such as that of the French kings at Versailles.
The palace was constructed on a monumental scale that was intended to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. From the palace, the Tsar ruled over 22,400,000 square kilometers (8,600,000 sq mi) (almost 1/6 of the Earth's landmass) and over 125 million subjects by the end of the 19th century. It was designed by many architects, most notably Bartolomeo Rastrelli, in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style. The green-and-white palace has the shape of an elongated rectangle, and its principal façade is 215 metres (705 ft) long and 30 m (98 ft) high. The Winter Palace has been calculated to contain 1,886 doors, 1,945 windows, 1,500 rooms and 117 staircases. Following a serious fire, the palace's rebuilding of 1837 left the exterior unchanged, but large parts of the interior were redesigned in a variety of tastes and styles, leading the palace to be described as a "19th-century palace inspired by a model in Rococo style".

There's an official term for the vertical column of light occasionally seen at sunset, possibly "columnar", but it's not my field. But it's very rare, rarer still in this region, where we can go months without a proper sunset like this one!

According to officials from both Arches & Canyonlands National Parks, this is the last year we'll be able to use low level lighting during our workshop events. For some time, park officials allowed permitted workshop leaders to use low level lighting while they prohibited artificial lighting (other than for safety) for the public at large. Now, they've announced plans to prohibit artificial lighting for both the public at large and for workshops beginning in 2020.
With permits in national parks plus the blm and dead horse state park, we welcome this news. It gives us an opportunity to make the most of our ability to use Low Level Lighting in the national parks this year and it gives us an opportunity to make the most of all the incredible locations we've scouted and been taking people to outside of the national parks. We didn't know it at the time but we've been preparing for this transition for years and we welcome it. We hope you'll join us - either this year in our last opportunities to use Low Level Lighting or next year as we expand our reach even further.
