In my area of Ohio and West Virginia and part of Pennsylvania, the 17 year Cicadas are emerging after 17 years underground.
After emerging from the ground the 17 year old nymph phase of the insect will climb vegetation and trees and break out of there nymph exoskeleton giving birth to the adult form of the insect which then sets to finding a mate .
To find a mate the males will vibrate an organ in their abdomen called Tymbals, which works like a child's clicker toy. the sound is intensified by the abdomen. The haunting chorus of thousands of cicadas all singing for a mate at the same time produces a memorable sound that can travel for miles and isn't soon forgotten. After mating the female will make grooves in a branch of a tree and deposit her eggs in the groove. Once the eggs hatch the tiny nymphs will feed on the fluids that bleed from the tree into the grooves. Then the nymphs will fall to the ground burrow in to feed on fluids from roots for the next 17 years until they all emerge at the same time to start the whole cycle again. Amazing.
To borrow a phrase I saw on facebook , "The 17 year cicadas have emerged and are partying in the trees like its 1999" LOL
