The Shrine of St. Anthony is where we're photographing a wedding next weekend.

It's in the middle of Howard County, Maryland, and to say that the place was utterly spectacular would be an understatement. I am now looking forward to returning to this peaceful place often.

The first time I visited Oslo in the summer of 2017, I went to a handful of museums: The Munch Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Gallery of Norway (because they have the original of The Scream, though you'd think that would be at the Munch), the Astrup Fearnley Museum, even the Mini Bottle Gallery. That's a niche museum...of mini bottles. (Surprisingly worth the visit, too, though I didn't go back this time -- just walked by it. Pressed for time.)

I also went to the Kon-Tiki Museum, Fram Museum, Vikingskipshuset, and the Norsk Folkemuseum across the fjord in Bygdoy -- reachable by ferry. The Bygdoy museums are all worth a day trip, too. Very enjoyable, each one. (The Viking Ship Museum is temporarily closed, though, and that -- along with enough time -- was also enough to keep me from heading out there this trip.

As a bonus, there are also two outstanding sculpture parks in Oslo: Ekebergparken on the south end of downtown and Frognerparken (its official name, but also known as Vigelandsparken) on the north end of downtown. Oh...and Oslo has statues, monuments, sculptures all around town. I think I saw somewhere there are about 600 different sculptures around town, but I could be completely remembering that wrong. The point is...Oslo is a darned fine place to come if you love art. The museums charge admission, but the sculpture parks and sculptures around town are all free.

Fast forward 6.5 years, and I find myself back in town. The museum scene changed. A good number of those museums have merged. In 2017, they were in separate locations.

The Munch (hasn't merged -- just moved) is now on the waterfront next to the Opera House. Others have merged.

In 2003, the National Museum was established by merging the Museum of Architecture, the Museum of Industrial Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, and the National Gallery of Art into one large building. Though this happened in 2003, none of them had moved by 2017. In 2022, they finally all moved under one roof in the new National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design...or Nasjonalmuseet. The building is located on the edge of Radhusplassen, behind the Nobel Peace Prize Museum in a large space that makes for a great half day to day visit.

The Other Side of the Forest

aka Lori and the Six SIx Sixties

Music by Jowe Head.

The Other Side of the Forest was a feature film project based on a short treatment by Ben Soper, written by Ashley Sutherland and Lori Stott, and directed by Grant McPhee

Anyone expecting a fast paced, traditionally structured drama will be deeply disappointed. Anyone expecting a horror film will be deeply disappointed and anyone expecting an art-house film will be deeply dissapointed.

Anyone expecting Big Gold Dream or Teenage Superstars will be even more dissapointed.

However, anyone who likes the 1960s and 1970s phantastique of Jean Rollin, Daisies, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders or Jess Franco may have their interest piqued.

Anyone who likes the above but with added elements of lofi 1960s pop video aesthetics, trashy exploitation rock films, underground filmmaking and self indulgence may even be quite keen.

And anyone who would prefer to have ‘ambient folk horror’ playing as background TV after a heavy night out (or in) might just really enjoy it….

It won ‘Best Experimental Film’ at the Arizona Film Festival and ”Best Experimental Film Bronze Award’ at the Fortean Film Festival

This is what it says on the tin…

“The Other Side of the Forest” is a fantasy Pop-Art Fairytale directed by Grant McPhee and starring Lori Stott and AshleySutherland.

It is the story of a shy young woman seeking her fame in the dark world of the 1960sfolk-music underground. Lori’s journey to stardom takes her on an adventure far beyond the music world she is trying to break into, and instead she travels to a forgotten past of rural landscapes, magic, myth, dead Gods and mysterious fallen angels.

In this fantastical world Lori meets a mysterious time-travelling guide (Ashley Sutherland) who helps her navigate the malevolent threat of the Swine-Folk, dead Pop-Stars and ultimately; uncovering the mystery of what lies on the other side of the forest.

It is a bold mix of influences covering 1960’s British Youth-Film such as “Smashing Time’,70s experimental films like Requiem For a Vampire, Carnaby Street news-reel and the Counter-Culture texts ‘The White Goddess’, ‘The House on the Borderland’ and ‘The Golden Bough’.

It plays with structure, form and narrative while simultaneously exploring genre tropes and musical group performances.

It was filmed with analogue sound and film equipment, incorporating various 16mm and Super8 processing techniques–hand developing, vintage cameras, sellotaped film editing, scratching, double exposures and film looping. The film was edited by Andy Morrison (Lord of the Rings, The English, Outlander, The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Last Kingdom). The soundtrack is exclusively written by Post-Punk legend, Jowe Head (Swell Maps and Television Personalities).

The Other Side of the Forest is also known as ‘Lori and the Six Six Sixties’.

We Dream of Flying Canoes/ Nous rêvons de canots volants 2017

American Elm Tree, Aluminum, Steel, Stainless Steel, Phosphorescent Pigment, Silicone

10’ x 18’ x 10’

Collection of The City of Winnipeg/Festival Du Voyageur, Winnipeg, MB

“We Dream of Flying Canoes/Nous rêvons de canots volants” was carved from an American Elm Tree killed by Dutch Elm Disease. The form of a hand playing with a model canoe was selected as a gesture of play that can be attributable to either Eurocentric or Indigenous children. The Dodem (Clan Sigils) carved on the trunk of the tree are sourced from the “Selkirk Treaty of 1817” and serve as a permanent acknowledgment of the Indigenous claim to the ancestral lands on which the sculpture was erected. The sculpture was blessed at unveiling by Anishinaabe Elder Linda Blomme.

A video component is currently in progress, linked by QR to the sculpture plaque. A series of videos will present Indigenous and francophone stories involving flying canoes in their original language (where possible), as well as an Indigenous interpretation and opinion of the Selkirk Treaty by Niigaan Sinclair.
