At the Merrion Row corner of St. Stephen's Green you will find a bronze statue of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the leader of the 1798 rebellion. Flanked by monoliths, it was immediately nicknamed 'Tonehenge' by the local population.

In 1964 the architect Noel Keating and the sculptor Eddie Delaney won a competition to create the Wolfe Tone monument at the corner of St Stephen’s Green. That year Delaney was selected to make the Thomas Davis memorial on College Green.

Tone stands in alone in front of a collection of granite monoliths, which prompted the nickname Tonehenge. It should be noted that there is a companion piece, the Famine Memorial, located just behind the granite pillars.

Theobald Wolfe Tone, posthumously known as Wolfe Tone (20 June 1763 – 19 November 1798), was a leading Irish revolutionary figure and one of the founding members of the United Irishmen, and is regarded as the father of Irish republicanism and leader of the 1798 Irish Rebellion. He was captured at Letterkenny port on 3 November 1798, and he died sixteen days later for reasons that are disputed.

Today I took delivery of my "Holiday Lens"!! I already have the Z 24-70 f2.8 and the Z 70-200 f2.8 to go with my Z7ii and Z9, however, with some holiday trips coming up, not photo-shoots, I don't want to be lugging the big, heavy, expensive lenses around so, today, I bought the Z24-200 from Grays of Westminster. I have seen several reviews of this lens, a couple of which described it as the worst lens in the Z range, but most praised it for its compact size, low weight and sharp images so I was interested and excited to see what it could do. Immediately after the grand unboxing (no, I am not going to bore you with a YouTube on how to take a lens out of a box), I set off for a walk across the fields to the next village to try a selection of shots. A beautiful afternoon but probably not the best photographic conditions - bright harsh summer sunshine! Anyway, here is a selection of shots taken with this new lens. They can also be seen in www.briandandridge-photo.co.uk/TEST-Files

The Halifax explosion of December 6, 1917 occurred where those red and white towers are now. Two ships collided with one carrying wartime explosives. twenty minutes later it exploded killing 2,000 people by debris, fires, and collapsed buildings. It is estimated that nearly 9,000 others were injured. The blast was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons, with an equivalent force of roughly 2.9 kilotons of TNT.

Field Marshal Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, KG, OM, GCB, GCSI, GCMG, GCVO, DSO, MC, LL.D, PC (10 December 1891 - 16 June 1969) was a British military commander and field marshal, notably during the Second World War as the commander of the 15th Army Group. He later served as the last British Governor General of Canada.

The third son of the 4th Earl of Caledon (a descendant of the Alexanders of Limavady, fCounty Londonderry) and the former Lady Elizabeth Graham-Toler, a daughter of the 3rd Earl of Norbury,

He was commissioned into the Irish Guards in 1911. During the First World War, Alexander's battalion formed a part of the original British Expeditionary Force (BEF), in which he was a 22-year-old lieutenant and platoon commander.

Alexander became the youngest lieutenant-colonel in the British Army during the war, and when the Great War ended he was in temporary command of a brigade. He served on the Western Front and was wounded twice in four years of fighting. He received the Military Cross in 1915, the Distinguished Service Order in 1916, and the Legion of Honour, and by 1918 was an acting brigadier.

Rudyard Kipling, who wrote a history of the Irish Guards in which his own son fought and was killed, noted that, "It is undeniable that Colonel Alexander had the gift of handling the men on the lines to which they most readily responded . . . his subordinates loved him, even when he fell upon them blisteringly for their shortcomings; and his men were all his own."

In 1919 - 1920 Alexander led the Baltic German Landeswehr in the Latvian War of Independence, commanding units loyal to the Republic of Latvia in the successful drive to eject the Bolsheviks from Latgale[3]. He later served in Turkey and Gibraltar before returning to England and the Staff College, Camberley and the Imperial Defence College. In 1937 he was promoted to major-general.

Title: Karang Kapota Fisherman

Description: Karang Kapota a very remote atoll off the South East coast of Sulawesi (Indonesia) Because of its remoteness there is no permanent settlement on the atoll.

Fisherman live there for month at the time catch fish and keep them in pens in the water , or catch and dry sea cucumbers for trading and sale. Traders come to take the fish, or sea cucumbers in exchange for money or goods.

In the picture you see a local fisherman early in the morning on his way to the fishing grounds. He will spent the entire day in his small boat surrounded by water before he returns in the evening to his hut built on stilts on the edge of an atoll island.

It also gives details of fares such as the bargain "Leg-Room Special" fares alongside mid-week, Holiday Runabout, Rail Rovers and Group Travel. Their also still, just, advertising Camping Coaches as well as Continental services via the BR ferry routes.

The folder is not dated but the two route diagrams - maps - shown are dated to 1966. They show that various branch lines have already been pruned under the Beeching "Axe" and, of course, there have been many subsequent changes to routes and service patterns particularly in the London Suburban area such as Tramlink and Thameslink.

This is the diagramattic version of the Southern's extensive suburban network that covered much of South London and the adjacent Home Counties. Largely electrically operated this was one of the world's largest and busiest suburban and commuting networks serving the main city termini of Victoria, Waterloo, Charing Cross, Holborn Viaduct, Cannon Street and London Bridge. There have been some substantial changes over the years such as Thameslink, Tramlink between Wimbledon and Croydon and some other losses.

Day 11: After leaving Reims I headed further East to Strasbourg, the crossroads of French and German culture, in time to watch a Germany VS France Euro Cup game. It was a very different city, with its germanic architecture built from red stones out of the clay bearing soil. The food here was fantastic.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg is a beautiful gothic church in central Strasbourg and offers a stunning view of the city. It was the world's tallest building for 227 years from 1647 to 1874.

Is cultural diversity being sacrificed for biodiversity? A hunter-gatherer point of view from Congo

Dr. Jerome Lewis (UCL)

Western trained conservationists practice a model of conservation that assumes people to be the problem. Certain animals are classed in terms of their scarcity - as rare and/or endangered species. According to this logic if these animals and their environment is protected from people then it will be fine. Policing protected areas then becomes the primary cost of conservation projects. By contrast the Mbendjele Pygmy hunter-gatherers' economy is structured on the principle that nature will always be abundant if people share properly whatever they extract. But the capitalist extractive system now imposed on their forest is based on the systematic extraction of resources for sale on international markets by private companies owned by international elites. These organisations hoard profits and share little with the local communities impacted by their activities. In a short film some Mbendjele men and women express their understanding of the situation and what its impact is on their lives and culture.

A site I never tire of in Italy.... undies in the sun :)

FYI:

"It's fun to explore the little alleyways of Europe's medieval centers. We recently stumbled upon a couple of courtyards in Gallipoli, Italy full of beautiful tools, religious artifacts and found objects that are part of Gallipoli's past.

Little blind alleys called "corte" become like small piazze in Galipoli. People who live in the area gather together in these places--and decorate them. The folks living around Corte Gallo are pretty friendly, and invited us to gawk at the incredible display of things from their lives. What's amazing is that there wasn't a speck of dust anywhere.

Gallipoli is on the western shore of Italy's heel, in Puglia. It's one of my favorite Puglia villages, featuring great seafood and friendly people. It's also extremely photogenic."

The Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary flight.

34 Spitfires and Hurricanes took off from Goodwood in the space of about 20 minutes, from 1400. Arranged in groups of three or four planes, they flew to various destinations in the South of England, visiting many towns and sites of significance in the Battle on the way. Three Spitfires headed north-east to fly to Bentwaters (Suffolk). They are seen here passing over the former RAF Martlesham Heath airfield at 15.08.

From top to bottom they are

Supermarine Seafire Mk IIIc PP972 (G-BUAR, Markings 11 5)

Supermarine Spitfire Mk Ia X4650 (G-CGUK, Markings KL A)

Supermarine Spitfire T9 ML407 (G-LFIX, Markings vOU)

This is a two seater, based at the former airbase at Bentwaters, near Woodbridge.

The pictures aren't really up to my usual standard, but were taken on a Canon compact camera, as I didn't really think there would be much opportunity for perfection!

BLACKHEAD LIGHTHOUSE MARKS THE NORTHERN EXTREMITY OF BELFAST LOUGH. THIS OCTAGONAL TOWER WAS DESIGNED BY WILLIAM DOUGLASS, ENGINEER TO THE COMMISSIONERS OF IRISH LIGHTS. IT WAS COMPLETED IN 1902 AND WAS PAINTED RED. AN EXPLOSIVE FOG SIGNAL WAS ESTABLISHED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE LIGHT. ON THE 20TH AUGUST 1929 THE COLOUR OF THE TOWER WAS CHANGED TO WHITE.

FROM SEPTEMBER 1965, THE EXPLOSIVE FOG SIGNAL WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A BRILLIANT FLASH OF LIGHT WHEN SOUNDING DURING THE HOURS OF DARKNESS.

ON 23RD SEPTEMBER 1965 BLACKHEAD ANTRIM LIGHTHOUSE WAS CONVERTED TO ELECTRIC AND THE INTENSITY OF THE LIGHT WAS INCREASED GIVING A RANGE OF 27 NAUTICAL MILES. AT THE SAME TIME THE DURATION OF THE FLASH WAS DECREASED TO 0.15 SECONDS, THE CHARACTER BEING FL W 3 SECS (FL 0.15, EC 2.85). THE LANTERN EQUIPMENT IS A 920MM CATADIOPTRIC ANNULAR LENS WITH A PRB22 GEARLESS DRIVE AND MBI 400W LAMPS IN A UVLA LAMPCHANGER.

THE FOG-SIGNAL WAS DISCONTINUED IN FEBRUARY 1972.

IN JULY 1975 THE LIGHTKEEPERS WERE WITHDRAWN FROM THE STATION AND SINCE THEN IT HAS BEEN IN THE CARE OF A PART-TIME ATTENDANT.

ON THE 1ST APRIL 1992 THE RADIOBEACON CALIBRATION SERVICE AT MEW ISLAND WAS DISCONTINUED AND MOVED TO BLACKHEAD ANTRIM. IN MORE RECENT TIMES UTILISATION OF RADIO DIRECTION FINDERS BY MARINERS HAS BEEN TO A GREAT EXTENT SUPERCEDED BY MORE MODERN TECHNOLOGY. FOR THIS REASON THE COMMISSIONERS DISCONTINUED THEIR MEDIUM FREQUENCY RADIOBEACON SERVICE ON 1ST FEBRUARY 1999.

Greensleeves Morris Men

Greensleeves Morris Men are one of the longest established Morris dancing sides in the country and are based in Wimbledon in south-west London (London Borough of Merton).

Event: Greensleeves Boxing Day tour (26th December), Wimbledon Village (London, England)

An interesting event showing examples of sticks, swords, rapper dancing with a Mummers play thrown in too.

Further information about the origins of Morris dancing, sticks, swords and rappers can be found on the Greensleeves Morris website: www.greensleevesmorris.org.uk/index.html

What are Mummers plays?

There are many Mummers' plays of one sort or another recorded in Britain and the names of the hero and villain reflect local traditions. The hero is usually England's Patron Saint, St George. The villain varies more widely and he may be the 'Bold Slasher', the 'Turkish Knight' or the 'Black King of Pardine'. In some plays from the south of England, 'Old Boney' (Napoleon) makes an appearance as the villain.

The plays are short dramas with rhymed texts, traditionally performed in association with certain annual festivals - mostly Christmas. There are three main types of play, the most prominent is the hero/combat play. It starts with an introductory prologue and is followed by challenges and a sword fight between the hero and an antagonist. As a result of this, one of them is "slain" and a quack doctor is brought in to perform a cure. The doctor then magically brings the corpse to life again.

The costumes worn can be intended to portray the character being acted, much as you would expect in a regular stage play. However many sides wear non-representational costumes instead, typically smocks or shirts covered with patches, ribbons, paper strips, etc. Also the face was commonly disguised either by blacking up or by obscuring the face with the headgear. The plays text were passed down orally and vary from play to play.

The play finishes with money being extracted from the audience in order to supply beverages, (usually alcoholic), for the players.

Further information about folk plays can be found at this website: www.folkplay.info/index.htm
