Some of the Wunderkammer that I've created over the years. Some still in existence, some in storage, others"lost in transit"

Pals of the Privies Kids walking group had their big day out at Ayr beach fun park this evening. It was a bit cloudy with the seaguls dive bombing every chance they got as we sat down to eat.

One gulf first tried to grab my pizza as it battered into the side of my head and latter one stole as others made off with one girls sauage super like flying rats...

But with those misshaps asside, the kids all had a great evening out after a slow start along the busy motorway.

Epidotic granite dike in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.

This is part of a famous outcrop in northeastern Minnesota - Confusion Hill. These are intrusive igneous rocks (principally dark-colored diorite at this spot) of Late Archean age, part of the Giants Range Batholith. The greenish and pinkish structure is an epidotic granite dike that has intruded through the host rock. The greenish mineral is epidote, a calcium hydroxy-aluminoferrosilicate, Ca2(Al,Fe)3(SiO4)3(OH). The pinkish mineral is potassium feldspar, a potassium aluminosilicate, KAlSi3O8.

Geologic unit & age: Giants Range Batholith, Neoarchean, 2.674 to 2.682 Ga

Locality: Confusion Hill outcrop - roadcut on the eastern side of northbound Rt. 169/Rt. 53, immediately north of roadside rest stop, northwestern side of Lookout Mountain, Laurentian Divide, just north of the town of Virginia, central St. Louis County, northeastern Minnesota, USA (47° 34' 40.71" North, 92° 32' 37.21" West)

Commemorating the first English Civil War battle at Edgehill, fought on 23 October 1642. This reenactment took place at Kineton, a village on the original battlefield area, 374 years ago to the day. The battle between Royalists and Parliamentarians was indecisive and led to three more years of civil war.

Samut Prakan is one of the central provinces of Thailand, established by the Act Establishing Changwat Samut Prakan, Changwat Nonthaburi, Changwat Samut Sakhon and Changwat Nakhon Nayok, Buddhist Era 2489 ( 1946 ), which came into force as from 9 March 1946. It is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Neighbouring provinces are Bangkok, to the north and west, and Chachoengsao to the east. Suvarnabhumi Airport (or also called New Bangkok International Airport) is located in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province.

The province was created during the Ayutthaya period, with its administrative centre located at Phra Pradaeng. It was the sea port of Siam, and was secured with forts, town moats and town-walls. King Rama II started the building of the new centre at Samut Prakan in 1819, after his predecessor King Taksin had disbanded the town fortification. Altogether six forts were built on both sides of the Chao Phraya river, and on an island in the river the pagoda Phra Samut Chedi was erected. These were involved in the Paknam incident of 13 July 1893, which ended the Franco-Siamese War with the French naval blockade of Bangkok. Of the original six forts only two exist today, Phi Sua Samut and Phra Chulachomklao.

In Thai the word Samut is from Sanskrit, samudra, meaning ocean or sea, and the word Prakan is from Sanskrit, prākāra, meaning fortress, walls or stronghold.

The provincial seal shows the temple Phra Samut Chedi, the most important site of Buddhist worship in the province. Provincial tree is Thespesia populnea. The provincial slogan is Marine Battle Fortresses, Chedi in the Water, Crocodile Farm, Exquisite Ancient City, Phra Pradaeng Songkran Festival, Tasty Dried Snakeskin Gourami, Rap Bua Festival, Industrial Estate.

Phra Pradeang ( a district in Samut Prakan ) was the original centre of the area south of Bangkok near the mouth of the Chao Phraya river. Originally named Nakhon Khuan Khan it was settled by Mon. In 1815, King Rama II built the Pom Phlaeng Faifa fort at the river bend. The fort is now located in a small park and accessible for visitors. In 1819 the new town Samut Prakan (or Paknam) was established. Due to the economic problems in the early 1930's several administrative entities were abolished, including Phra Pradaeng province which had its districts were assigned to Samut Prakan and Thonburi effective April 1, 1932. A 2 km tramway across the neck of the huge Phra Pradaeng river bend opened in 1908 and closed around 1940. Operated by a private company, the motorised trams connected with motorboat services to Bangkok and to Paknam at each end of the line. The tram cut a considerable time off the up and down river journey by avoiding the long river bend.

Samut Prakan is located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya river to the Gulf of Thailand. Thus the province is also sometimes called Pak Nam the Thai word for the mouth of a river. The part of the province located on the western side of the river consist mostly of rice and prawn fields as well as mangrove forests, while the east part is the urban centre - including industrial factories. It is part of the Bangkok metropolis, the urbanization on both sides of the provincial boundary is identical. The province has a coastline of about 47.2 kilometres. Bang Pu Nature Reserve, about 12 km east of the town centre, has a large bird population. Especially during the winter the Sakdi pier at Bang Pu is very popular for Thai people feeding the wintering seagulls. The park is run jointly by the Royal Thai Army and the Thai WWF, and was officially established at the 72nd birthday of Queen Sirikit in 2004.

The HTMS Maeklong, a former Royal Thai Navy ship is moored in concrete at Chulachomklao Fort at the mouth of the Chao Phraya in Amphoe Phra Samut Chedi. Two major tourist attractions of the province are located in Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan, the capital district: Mueang Boran or Ancient City, a park that features downscaled replicas of all major historical buildings of Thailand; and the Crocodile Farm. Besides being the home of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Amphoe Bang Phli is famous for the annual Lotus Flower ( Rap Bua ) festival, which usually takes place on the full moon in October

The province is sub divided into 6 districts (Amphoe). The districts are further sub divided into 50 sub districts

( Tambon ) and 396 villages ( Muban ). There are one city ( thesaban nakhon ), three towns ( thesaban mueang ) and 13 sub district municipalities ( thesaban tambon ). For the national elections the province is divided into 3 voting districts, one eligible for three assembly men and the other two each for two assembly men.

This is a photograph from the East of Ireland Marathon Series Marathon held at Stapelstown, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland at 09:00 on Saturday 21st of September 2013. This is the first East of Ireland Marathon Series race outside of Dublin and also the first to have been run on rural roads and is race 5 of the East of Ireland Marathon Series 2013.

There was beautiful but warm weather in Stapelstown for the marathon which made conditions tougher than expected. The course brought runners on a loop from the village over towards Prosperous, Co. Kildare, and then back to the finish/refreshment area. The event was very well organised and whilst these races operate with a degree of self sufficiency for runners there was adequate marshalling, course marking, and refreshments available. Well done to all.

The East Of Ireland Marathon Series aims to make marathons affordable and convienient for the runners of Ireland. The serires organisers aim to promote marathon running and to make the process as stress free and enjoyable as possible. All courses are measured to full AAI standards and have a minimum of 10 Entrants. The marathons are self sufficent to a degree although there are limited supplies of water available on the day of the race. There will be no extra frills like chip timing and finish gantrys. However all finishing times are accurately and officially recorded. This is to keep the price down and keep the races as affordable as possible. The East of Ireland Marathon series is all inclusive and welcomes runners who are new to marathon running as well as experienced veterans.

This photograph is part of a Flickr set of photographs we took at this event. The Flickr set is available here [http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157635665725976/]. This set includes photographs from the start, in-race, and finish of the race.

Overall Race Summary

Participants: The East of Ireland marathon series stricly limits the number of participants. There were about 50 participants in the race today.

Weather: There was warm sunny weather for the race with competitors finding the humid conditions very tough as the race progress on around mid day. There was no real wind but a breeze which did help keep runners cool.

Course: The race started at St. Kevin's GAA and proceeded west into Stapelstown Village and reached a turnaround point which brought runners back to the starting point. This meant that runners then had to complete four complete loops of the 6.09 mile loop outlined below. This loop then proceeded directly southwards towards Prosperous but makes a sharp right turn before Properous village. This brings runners onto the Ballynafagh road and northwards back towards Stapelstown village. Runners then run down through the village (passing the finish and refreshment area) to complete the loop. The course is on traffic open country roads.

Can I use these photographs directly from Flickr on my social media account?

Yes - of course you can. Flickr provides several ways to share this and other photographs in this Flickr set. You can share to: email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, LiveJournal, and Wordpress and Blogger blog sites. Your mobile device will also offer you several different options for sharing this photo page on your social media outlets.

How can I get full resolution copies of these photographs?

All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available free, at no cost, at full image resolution. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images without the watermark: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, blogs, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you must provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us.

This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember when requesting photographs from us - all we ask is for you to provide a link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. You will find the link above clearly outlined in the description text which accompanies this photograph. Taking these photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.

If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Here's a photo of the switch mounted on the bike. The bracket I mounted it on moves the switch down 2 inches and outward as far as the frame tube. This makes it easier to find the switch with a gloved hand. But the switch should not be mounted so low that it interferes with removing the air cleaner or adjusting the carbs.

Geology

Interesting news article that appeared in Age newspaper today. My old RMIT Geology lecturer, Phil Bock found an 18 million year old fossil in a limestone block on campus. '... The barnacle, of genus Tetraclitella but yet to be given a species name, was discovered late last year by retired geologist Phil Bock. ....' (The Age, Court gives up Barnacle Phil's discovery)

Beneath the church at the Franciscan Monastery in Lima, Peru, there is an ossuary where the skulls and bones of an estimated 70,000 people are decoratively arranged.

Long forgotten, the catacombs were rediscovered in 1943 and are believed to be connected via subterranean passageways to the cathedral and other local churches. Both creepy and beautiful, they feature small grates scattered along the upper floor of the cathedral through which, while you are touring, you may look down at any given moment to see the artistically arranged dead illuminated.

The government of the Swiss Confederation has been based in the Bundeshaus (Parliament) in Bern since the building was completed in 1902.

Built to the plans of architect Hans Wilhelm Auer in the Neo-Renaissance style, it is home to both the National Council and the Council of States, with each of the country’s cantons represented.

Guided tours are available in many languages, allowing you to look around both of the chambers and the impressive domed hall which stands between them and beneath the copped-topped dome seen from the outside.

The parliament is fronted by the Bundesplatz, where 23 water jet fountains – one for each of the cantons – shoot up into the air from the pavement every day.

Chad Farquharson and Wayne McGill, two well-known Surrey citizens, have been presented with the province’s newest honour, the Medal of Good Citizenship. Farquharson and McGill will be honoured with the medal for being unrelenting advocates for BC families who have children with medical needs, and have provided hundreds of families with healthy snacks while they care for their hospitalized child.

Launched in July 2015 by Premier Clark, the prestigious Medal of Good Citizenship recognizes individuals who, through exceptional long-term service, have made outstanding contributions to their communities without expectation of remuneration or reward. The medal reflects their generosity, service, acts of selflessness and contributions to community life.

Kalkriese, the site of the final destruction of the 17th 18th and 19th Legions.

This was the total width of ground available for the remains of the Legions to "run the gauntlet" of the German warriors behind their barricades on the left and the impenetrable marsh to the right. The paved path is modern, of course

It was a disaster when they were caught in a running ambush after days of foul weather and traveling through country - thick, untamed forest - totally unsuited to their normal formations and wiped out in the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9 by the warrior Arminius and a coalition of German tribes.

The site has only been recently discovered. There are a very high proportion of military finds and bone pits containing the remains of Romans later found and buried by the Roman general Germanicus.

The site itself is geographically interesting but it's such a pity that very few of the actual finds are on display. The attached museum isn't doing itself any favours with the paucity of display

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum regarded as one of the most important museums in Europe, is located in the center of Iraklion or Heraklion city. During the Venetian occupation period the Catholic Monastery of Saint Francisco used to be in the same place. Until it's destruction in the earthquake of 1856, it had been one of the richest and most important monasteries in Crete and had contained great Byzantine frescos.

The construction of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum started in the beginning of the 20th century and was completed by 1940.

On the ground floor of the museum there are 13 rooms open to the public while on the 1st floor fragments of the original frescos from the Minoan Palace of Knossos are exhibited. All exhibits in the Heraklion Museum come exclusively from archaeological sites in Crete. The exhibits of the museum are arranged chronologically.

This video was taken by and is courtesy of professional photographer Thomas Schwab of Moments by Thomas (www.m Our Vounteers working hard during our Merritt Boulevard Cleanup of Bread and Cheese Creek on 4/14/12omentsbythomas.net) These photos show conditions of the historic Bread and Cheese Creek between Merritt Boulevard and Plainfield Road (next to Merritt Manor Shopping Center) before our Saturday, April 14, 2012 cleanup between 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM. We met at 2408 Plainfield Road in Dundalk. All volunteers greatly appreciated!

Our cleanups are part of an ongoing effort clean the entire stream by 2014 in preparation for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. (Bread and Cheese Creek has been noted as one of the possible highlighted location on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail) The creek played a rather significant part in the Battle of North Point which took place on September 12, 1814. Both the American and British Troops camped along its banks. It is rumored that the young heroes Daniel Wells (19) and Henry McComas (18) used the stream channel to sneak up on British General Robert Ross killing him with their muskets before being killed in return fire. This important part of our history should not be left the eyesore it currently is.

Remember, there plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to work the grills as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. Please feel free to pass this information on to other who might be interesting in helping as well. As my grandfather always said, “Many hands makes the work light”. We run our cleanups as a family event with all age groups welcome by developing plenty of ways for volunteers to participate.

“How do you all feel about the push-up?”

Gen. Michael X. Garrett, the Commanding General of the United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), joined Charlie Company, 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion (DUSTOFF) early this morning for some high-intensity interval Tabata training at the #10thCAB’s own Falcon Gym.

Since October 2018, 3-10 GSAB has been participating in the ACFT pilot program as one of 60 battalions chosen across the #USArmy to determine standards.

As part of the Holistic Health Fitness (H2F) Initiative, the MEDEVAC company has been joined by a small group of strength and conditioning trainers, athletic trainers, physical therapists and dietitians brought under the battalion to advise leaders on reducing injuries and building readiness through proper exercise and nutrition.

Growing readiness starts at the individual level. When a unit has strong, healthy Soldiers, they can fight from a place of confidence. Majors talk about strategy; Generals talk about squads, said Gen. Michael Garrett as he addressed the DUSTOFF formation. “When we have squads who can win at the point of contact, we will win every time.”

“Physical fitness in a MEDEVAC company is essential, it fits into every aspect,” said Maj. Eric Nuetkans, Commander of Charlie Company, 3-10 GSAB. “Being able to respond, to sprint out of the aircraft quickly; it’s a high tempo job. Doing PT like this enhances that team environment and our trust in one another, and we need that trust during very dynamic situations.”

Physical Training and fitness form the very core of what it means to be a Soldier. As our Army changes tactics and technology, the way we look at Soldier’s diets and exercise must also change. To meet the demands of a modern battlefield, we need to provide our Soldiers with the very best in terms of health and nutrition. That is the goal of our Military and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

“My absolute favorite part of being in the Army is that we get paid to work out,” laughed Gen. Garrett. “It’s just about the most important thing we do each day.”
