I bought some Gerbera Daisies last week with every intention of photographing them. The market sells them in bunches of six. I always try to pick out the bunch with the most interesting centers and colors. They didn't last as long as usual and began to wilt. I wasn't happy with any of the shots I had taken and decided to scrap the idea. This morning I was cleaning up around my kitchen and was going to toss them all out. I noticed this one and I couldn't resist. The center looks like a ton of candles on a cake.

i love the fact that so many woman have put on copius amounts of lipstick and kissed his grave...seems more likely that he'd appreciate the male models pressing their lips to his grave, so when ADDA DADA first visited his grave back in the 1970's...and ADDA was a tad bit a looker..I placed a nice smack on his grave...sans lipstick, though, for ADDA never could find the right color...hahaha

OSCAR WILDE

Born october 16, 1854-dublin...died november 30, 1900 paris

after a wait of 9 years in bagneaux cemetery, WILDE's remains were transferred to PERE LACHAISE on july 19, 1909. (the doctors had advised that oscar be buried in quicklime to reduce the body to bone before transfer. insstead, the substance perserved him, shocking the gravediggers, his hair and beard had even grown longer.)

it took JACOB EPSTEIN three years to sculpt his monument, which represents OSCAR WILDE as a winged messenger, done in the egyptian art deco style. when EPSTEIN arrived to put the finishing touches on the statue, he found it shrouded and guarded by a gendarme, the cementary conservateur had found it 'indecent' and had it banned.

officials refused to bow to public intellectual presure until an acceptable alteration was made-so a plaque of a fig leaf was put over the 'privates' making them private.

the tomb was unveiled in 1914, but by 1922 students, in nocturnal raids, had hacke away the fig leaf as well as a substantial portion of what lay beneath.

(another 'story' is that two englishwoman, offended at WILDE's being publicly portrayed so well-endowned, committed the emasculation themselves. the conservateur, after finding the parts at tHE monument's base, is supposed to have used them as paperweight)

on the back of the tomb is his words from THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL:

and alien tears will fill for him

pity's long broken urn

for his mourners will be outcast men

and outcasts always mourn.

presents “Points of Departure: Foundations Exhibition”. This exhibition displays the excellence achieved in the foundation courses in the Department of Art at UWF. In contrast to TAG’s annual, juried student competition “TAGGED,” this is an open-call exhibition curated by the foundation-level art instructors.

The objective of “Points of Departure” is to showcase the challenges and successes introductory-level art students encounter in drawing, ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, digital arts and graphic design. These foundation courses are a crucial component of the program and form the cornerstone to a successful art-making practice. The works created in these classes are presented in a raw, unencumbered, salon-style format to engage students, faculty and the greater Northwest Florida community through a variety of media and expression.

MARINO ARCHEOLOGIA e RESTUARO ARCHITETTURA: McDonald’s in Italy Embraces Off-Menu Item(s): Slice of Roman Road & Silvio Berlusconi, THE NYT (22/02/2017) & LA REP. MILANO (08/03/2017).

1). McDonald’s in Italy Embraces Off-Menu Item: Slice of Roman Road, THE NYT (22/02/2017).

MARINO, Italy — It’s a common enough story in Italy: An ancient ruin — in this case, a tract of Roman road — is discovered during the construction of a building — in this case, a McDonald’s — and puts a halt to the work until the site can be excavated.

Rather than fret about lost time and money, McDonald’s decided to sponsor the dig, and it worked with the archaeological authorities to preserve the road, built between the second and first centuries B.C.

As of Tuesday, visitors to the fast-food restaurant, about 12 miles southeast of central Rome, could walk along the 147-foot stretch of road without even having to buy a Big Mac.

Many parts of Italy contain subterranean riches, and over the centuries, countless edifices have incorporated or adapted the ruins of previous eras. Several restaurants in Rome, for example, have an important historical or archaeological lineage, like being the site where Julius Caesar was murdered, or a place where oil amphorae were stocked in ancient times. Even the McDonald’s in Termini Station in Rome includes a section of the Servian Wall, from the fourth century B.C.

But the work at the McDonald’s in Marino — more precisely in the hamlet of Frattocchie, known as Bovillae in ancient times — stands out because the project incorporated the road, which would otherwise have been reburied.

“Archaeology is constantly bringing to light testimonies of the past that have to be documented in an exacting manner but can’t always be properly preserved,” said Alfonsina Russo, the Culture Ministry’s archaeological superintendent for the area.

In many cases, unless the finds are exceptional, they are reburied in the hopes that they can be re-examined later. “It’s better to protect them than to leave them exposed, when it’s not possible to properly care for them,” Ms. Russo explained. “The earth protects, man destroys.”

The finding of the road, uncovered in 2014 while digging for the foundations of the McDonald’s, came as a surprise. “We decided with McDonald’s to protect and promote this important site, which would have otherwise fallen again into oblivion,” Ms. Russo said.

The road was a diverticulum, or side passage, leading to the Appian Way, a Roman thoroughfare built in 312 B.C. The uncovered stretch probably led to a villa or a great estate, Ms. Russo said.

Archaeologists on the dig have said that the unearthed road, which has grooved signs of ancient wear and tear from cart wheels, was most likely used for a few hundred years before it was abandoned. The skeletons of three men found in the gutter of the road, which have been reproduced in resin casts, are signs that the road had been abandoned, said an archaeologist involved in the effort, Pamela Cerino.

The skeletons, which have yet to be dated through carbon testing, were found with items including terra cotta tiles, which led to the hypothesis that the road went out of use in the second or third century A.D., Ms. Cerino said.

She was hired by McDonald’s but worked under the supervision of the Culture Ministry, as is usually the case in Italy when private property is involved. McDonald’s spent around 300,000 euros, or about $315,000, on the restoration project.

The road was excavated, documented and enclosed in a gallery with a glass roof, so that patrons of the restaurant can look down on it. The entrance to the gallery is separate and can be visited by anyone, not just McDonald’s customers.

Given its remoteness from major attractions, the site is unlikely to attract many tourists, although explanatory panels in Italian and English have been installed throughout the site. School groups from nearby towns began arriving on Tuesday, when the site officially opened to the public.

The gallery is closed off by a gate and monitored with surveillance cameras, and McDonald’s Italia has pledged to pay for its upkeep. “That’s the most important thing, guaranteeing its constant maintenance,” said Ms. Russo, who added that Culture Ministry officials would periodically check on the site.

“It’s easy to excavate,” she said. “The more critical operation is to preserve a site.”

“We’re proud to be here, giving this Roman road,” said Mario Federico, managing director of McDonald’s Italia, who said it was the first time the restaurant chain had encountered the need for “a solution of this kind” in Italy.

Asked if he thought hungry patrons would be squeamish about seeing skeletons on display below, he said it was unlikely.

Digitised photograph of a 1950's OS Plan.

This OS Plan is part of an extensive set of OS Plans for Manchester / surrounding area and was used by Manchester Corporation's City Surveyor's Department.

These 1950's OS Plans are a particularly interesting find, as OS Plans went many years - from the end of WWI to post WWII - without revision.

It would appear that the City Surveyor's Department tasked the Town Hall Photographer to photograph the plans on the Photographer's Copy Camera.

Manchester Archives+ are able to publish this plan online as quote..."under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, ‘Crown’ copyright exists for a period of 50 years from the end of the year in which the work was first published.

This means that any Ordnance Survey mapping which was created prior to 1 April 2015 will be protected by Crown copyright for a period of 50 years from its first publication.

Accordingly, if an Ordnance Survey map was first published over 50 years ago it can be copied or otherwise used without a licence from OS."...unquote.

THE TOWN HALL PHOTOGRAPHER'S COLLECTION

The Town Hall Photographer’s Collection is a large photographic collection held in Manchester City Council’s Central Library archives, ranging in date from 1956 to 2007.

The collection consists of tens of thousands of images, covering the varied areas of work of Manchester Corporation and latterly, Manchester City Council.

The photographs were taken by staff photographers, who were tasked to document the work of Corporation/Council departments and, in doing so, captured many aspects of Manchester life and history, including significant changes to the Manchester landscape.

The collection includes many different formats from glass negatives, to slides, prints, CDs and even a couple of cine films.

What is especially exciting is that the majority of these images have never before been available in a digital format and therefore have only ever been seen by a handful of people.

A team of dedicated Staff and Volunteers are currently working on the systematic digitisation of the negatives held within the collection.

The days grow shorter as summer draws to an end. This must come as something of a relief to the Snowy Plovers, Terns, Avocets, and other bayland birds as it marks the end of their long nesting season. It a relief to me as well because with the end of nesting season my Special Use Permit (nicely up to date) allows me to photograph more broadly in the South Bay wildlife refuge. In celebration, I had a coordination meeting this week with the managers of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project followed by a photography session in the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve.

Eden landing has seen rapid change during the last few years. Last year my photographs showed a large construction project to subdivide Salt Ponds E12 and E13 into an array of smaller managed ponds. These are to be kept at various levels of salinity, as though salt evaporation ponds, but with the goal of providing habitat rather than producing salt. The array of new ponds covers what was a bare plain five years ago in which one could see the faint traces of many 19th century salt ponds of a similar scale. I am interested in seeing how the landscape develops. Will the 19th century traces still be readable after the 21st century construction?

On this trip I had three separate photography sessions. The first, staring around 4 pm, involved a short hike along some of the new subdividing levees near the eastside construction yard. These new ponds were filled with a few inches of low salinity water covered with ample crops of cyanobacteria. By 5:30 pm I had packed up and relocated to the north bank of Mt. Eden Creek with the idea of sending a camera over the construction site of a new flow control structure on the west edge of Salt Pond E13. When that session was finished I relocated to the south end of Salt Pond E10 with the idea of photographing the marsh near the outlet of Salt Pond E9, some 500 feet away. That pond was restored to tidal flow a couple of years ago and has been going through an interesting metamorphosis.

All three sessions involved clean steady flights below a Sutton Flowform 30 kite. The subjects were interesting and the photographs turned out quite well. What could be better? It is nice to be getting underway again in the salt pond landscape.

I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. Kite flying is prohibited over the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve without a Special Use Permit, as is access to this part of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.

Blackpool scooterists arrive on the Isle of Wight.

Immaculate vintage machines, unusual scooter creations, clouds of oil smoke, noise, retro music and seaside fun. The August Bank Holiday scooter gathering at Ryde on the Isle of Wight has it all.

Today Greek prime minister will announce the full details of the deal that it has negotiated with the EU-IMF-ECB over the conditions of the bailout package. So far the media here have been coy about saying what exactly the agreement contains but the general consensus is that it will include painful cuts across the board in terms of pay and conditions in both the private and public sector. In addition there are likely to be large job cuts as many civil service positions are axed. The most likely tactic will be a change from permanent contract to fixed term ones which when they run out will not be renewed.

As well as cuts in income Greeks are also going to be hit by yet another round of rises in VAT and other indirect taxes (the second in six months). Already the local public tranport authority here in Thessaloniki has announced 20-100% increase in bus ticket prices.

As you can imagine there is a lot of popular anger from people affected by these measures and this is likely to fuel a wave of protests and strikes in the coming months. Already the Greek communist party (KKE), which is the third largest has delared that it will fight the austerity package and is calling on workers to raise up. Other groups are also oganising different ways to try and fight against the government's plans with direct action and protests which have been scheduled for the coming week.

While everyone in Greece agrrees that the present situation is dire and things cannot continue as before they are bitter and angry that the very same politicians who failed to avert the present economic crisis either due to incompetence, corruption or indifference are now calling upon ordinary Greeks to make sacrifices. This would be a steep order for any country even in the best of circumstances but giving the extreme corruption of Greece's ruling political and economic nomenclenture none of country's leaders retains the moral stature necessary to convince people to take the difficult steps that lay ahead.

THe ruling PASOK party headed by Giorgos Papandreou has done little to clean up ts own house when it comes to graft and influence peddling and despite court cases in Germany and the UK, the scandals its senior members were involved in during their last term in power have yet to result in any criminal charges being brought against those involved here. On the other hand the newly elected leader of the defeated New Democracy, Antonis Samaras heads a party whose members presided other one of the worst periods of corruption in Greek history yet few have even been fired let alone been the subject of a court trial.

What people are enraged about is that such incompetence and corruption is likely to be repeated since no one is in a position to put a stop to the pevious abuses of power. The judiciary is little more than an extension of whoever is in power and can be ignored at will while the media is suppine in the face of the temptation of rewards from those in power in the form of state jobs, contracts and advertising revenue. Sometimes it seems that the news here is a choice between a Hellenic version of Fox News or Pravda, with very little objective reporting.

The clashes witnessed in Athens during May Day are likely to be repeated in the following days as the general strike this week is going to a catatlyst for people's rage and frustration.
