One of the old railway carriages which are used as beach huts on the Duver, St Helens, Isle of Wight
Number 85, along with other members of its class, was introduced to the Taff Vale Railway in 1899. At the grouping in 1923, the Great Western Railway received nine O2 class engines. They were all withdrawn during the 1920s, but No. 85 was bought by the Lambton Hetton & Joicey Colliery Co in Durham, numbered 52. It continued to work at the Philadelphia depot at Houghton-le-Spring until 1968. Number 85 arrived at KWVR at the end of 1970, but although a major restoration was not completed until 2000, where it was restored to original Taff Vale Railway condition for the first time in preservation. The boiler ticket expired in September 2009 and its overhaul was started soon afterwards because of the locomotive's popularity and good condition. The locomotive returned to service in February 2016 for the year's winter steam gala. Boiler ticket expires in 2026.

Gah the lens on this zorki (industar 22/3.5) is amazing pitty about all the lightholes in the shutter.
edit. after speaking to a repairer who didn't want to touch it (I guess he thought it was not worth the cost/time to repair) I took the plunge and have tried covering up the dozens of tiny pin holes burnt in to the shutter (some of the larger white spots here are 3 or 4 or even more tiny holes close together)

looks a mess but after 2 coats there's no light bleeding through.. now just got to leave it for a day, reassemble and recalibrate the rangefinder and probably all the extra weight of the liquid tape will require the shutter speed to be fine tuned as well.
Nicolette Gray traces the British history of this face to Miller & Richard’s Ornamented No. 9 c1857, notes a German version in 1858 and reports that J. Wood showed a (rare!) lower-case alphabet in 1863.¹ Ubiquitous in its time, it is known today as Southern Cross.
McGrew adds that the Bruce TF (New York) cataloged it as Ornamented 1041;² it was also shown by the Boston TF in 1860. Southern Cross is not to be confused with Cross Gothic, Bruce’s Ornamented No. 1528.
Like so many other recent bubble-bursting “surprises,” two sizes were shown in Hænel’s amazing catalog of 1847! Since Friedrich Bauer attributes Hænel’s success to importation of roman types from TFs in Great Britain and France³ and Gray’s earliest specimen is dated about a decade later, the original design is almost certainly French.
This letterpress typeface has not been digitally archived for posterity. An excellent working specimen is available to revival developers on request.

A small number of pictures taken while eating dinner out at a nice, cozy restaurant for our 14th anniversary. We had a really enjoyable time, ate some good food and spent some quality time together.
