This is the inn we love in Falmouth. It's a beautiful house, about a block away from the beach, the proprieter is a true character, and the breakfast is spectacular.

The Father Murphy AC 5 Mile Road Race, Fun Run, and Walk was held in Kildalkey, Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Easter Sunday 31st March 2013 at 12 noon.

This is the third successive year when the race has been staged in Kildalkey with races previous to 2011 held in the neighbouring parish village of Ballivor. The routing is a modification on the two previous years. This race combined an open 5 mile race and the annual Meath 5 mile road race championship. Traditionally, this race was held on St. Patrick's Day with the venues moving from Athboy, to Ballivor, to the current location of Kildalkey. This was it's first year having an Easter Sunday fixture.

The very cold weather of late did not deter over 200 runners, joggers, and walkers participating in the event. There were some great post-race refreshments available for competitors in the Kildalkey Community Center afterwards. Well done to everyone involved - from the members of Fr. Murphy AC, to the neighbouring clubs in Co. Meath - all of whom helped to continue to fine tradition that this race has built up over the past number of years. Our set of photographs are mostly from the finish area of the race. Fr. Murphy AC was formed in 1970 from the amalgamation of several smaller local clubs and now offers some very fine facilities to the people of this part of Co. Meath.

We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. We do not know of any other photographers who operate such a policy. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, Google Orkut etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. I ran the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set!

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

If you want to contribute something for these images?

We do not charge for these images. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the image(s) you request are good enough that you would ordinarily pay for their purchase we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible.

Shot for Bend Living Magazine

I was fortunate enough to manage to get a front row seat at the Blue Note for a very rare Frank Sinatra, Jr. performance. It was an evening of "Frank." Everyone in the place (which included some actors from the Sopranos) thought Frank, Jr. brought the place down.

He performed a cornucopia of songs that his dad stylized. To the best of my recollection, the set went like this:

Can't Take You Nowhere

That Face

I Was a Fool to Let You Go

I'm Moody

Here's to the Losers

One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)

I Get a Kick Out of You

Street of Dreams

I've Got You Under My Skin

Nature Boy

A Foggy Day

Summer Wind

My First Affair

Strangers in the Night

Where or When

You Shot Me Down

A most excellent performance from a most excellent performer.

The top part is one of my many odes to my wife.

The middle is 4 characters I was working on when I finally convinced myself I can't draw. The one with the beard is me at 40. The guy to the right always has his back to the "camera." The girl lying on the beach never wears a shirt. The guy off in the distance is ... who knows.

Then a note to myself about remembering that all people have stories.

Then some notes on story ideas.

Yes. I used to be a writer.

sticky notes on my laptop are somewhat easy to find. Note my wallpaper is a note - actually an admit to class - that kept my mood decent during end-of-the-year activities. Also realize I have kept the actual tardy slip for over a year.

A Madonna and Child in a brick wall niche above a "godshuis" door, expressing Marian devotion and the spiritual identity of the almshouse.

Interpretive Note:

This niche shrine, with its inscription Ave Maria (Latin: “Hail Mary”), is typical of Catholic almshouse architecture in Flanders and the Low Countries. It marks the building as one of the many 'Godshuizen', or charitable dwellings, traditionally endowed for elderly widows or poor townsfolk by private benefactors.

The figure of Mary with the Christ Child, set in a Gothic-arched recess, served not just as a devotional image but also as a signal of moral respectability and protection—important in Catholic civic culture. Flower boxes and seasonal decorations are often maintained as acts of ongoing piety. The rustic lettering and handmade planter evoke a living tradition of neighborly religious upkeep.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This niche image from a brick façade in Bruges—or a similar Flemish locale—shows a small-scale devotional sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child. Though modest, its form and placement reflect centuries of tradition in Marian street iconography, rooted in late medieval and Baroque Catholic culture. Let’s analyze it art historically and suggest possible sources:

️ Iconography: Mary and the Christ Child

The sculpture follows a long iconographic tradition known as "Madonna and Child", which depicts the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. Key features:

Mary’s posture is upright and stately, typical of Northern European Gothic and post-Gothic types.

She wears a crown, identifying her as the Queen of Heaven—a title popularized in Gothic and Baroque Catholicism.

The Christ Child is shown front-facing and elevated in her arms, sometimes blessing or holding a symbolic object (though it's hard to tell here).

This imagery roots the sculpture in centuries of visual theology: Mary as Theotokos (God-bearer), intercessor, and spiritual mother to the faithful. It’s devotional rather than narrative, meant for prayer and reflection.

Architectural Context and Style

The brick niche is a pointed arch, likely a neo-Gothic or late 19th-/early 20th-century pastiche of medieval forms.

The sculpture appears to be made of painted or polychromed plaster or stone, suitable for outdoor veneration but also mass-produced—likely from a 19th- or early 20th-century religious workshop.

This style of Marian imagery proliferated especially in Catholic countries like Belgium after the Counter-Reformation, and into the 19th century with the Marian revival spurred by papal dogma (e.g., Immaculate Conception, 1854).

️ Devotional Niche Tradition

Devotional statues like this were placed on street corners, over doorways, and at intersections to invoke protection, honor the Virgin, or mark important places.

️ Art Historical Source or Model

While not a direct copy of any one masterpiece, this sculpture is clearly derived from Northern European Gothic Madonna types:

Think of works like the “Virgin and Child from the Church of Saint-Denis” (14th c.) or Netherlandish wooden Madonnas from the 15th century.

The crown, flowing robes, and formal pose may also reflect later Baroque Madonnas influenced by Peter Paul Rubens or his followers.

Mass-produced versions of these forms—cast in plaster or terracotta—were common in Belgium and France from 1850 to 1950, distributed through religious shops and pilgrim centers like Lourdes, Lisieux, or Scherpenheuvel.

the hills are yellow with mustard grass. it's a reassuring sign that spring has arrived. it's a late start this year and the plants are shorter than usual. but given the drought it's actually amazing we get bloom at all. these plants are quite weedy in appearance, not something you want in your garden. but they do make spectacular stands in the wild with their abundant flowers. these flowers are quite delicate and ephemeral. a light breezy can send petals falling like a million tiny yellow sticky notes. kinda reminds me all those 'important' things we put down on sticky notes, in the end, they seldom matter
