ROAD TRIP. To me, those are two of the most beautiful words in the English language. (“Cellar door” is also nice, of course.) It’s springtime in south Louisiana and, hoping for great weather, my buddy Gaylon [ www.flickr.com/photos/gaylon/ ] and I hatched a plan for a trip to explore the region southwest of where we live, down at the edge of the earth where the road ends and the vast but fragile and fast-disappearing coastal marsh begins. At daybreak on Saturday, March 14, we hopped in my truck and drove in the direction of Vermilion Bay to our destination: Avery Island, home of the Tabasco sauce factory and Jungle Gardens, a 170-acre botanical garden created in the 1920s by conservationist Edward Avery McIlhenny, son of Tabasco’s founder and heir to the McIlhenny family business. It turned out to be a fine day for exploring in the outdoors, camera in hand. But, really – what day isn’t? Carpe diem.

Looking back at this rainy Summer day in 2012, I'm more than a little surprised that I didn't get any 'gator shots, because Lake Martin is loaded with them.
Thought I'd try a Picture in Picture type of still life. I was thinking of a creepy haunted house where there are portraits on the walls whose eyes follow you where ever you go.
I took regular still life subjects, the fruit, and shot them in three different actual wood frames. I shot the frames in a "down light" fashion, because I wanted them to show as if they were being displayed hanging on a wall, of course! I separately shot the fruit in a classic 45 degree "portrait" lighting style, for their "family portraits". I then used an overlay texture on top of my background for the wall. I hope this makes sense. lol

Since my last upload I spent a few days with my mum, then had a 'final push' at work (preparing for vacation), and tomorrow I'm heading off to the mountains ... to recharge my batteries.

I don't know about you, but I hadn't budgeted for studded shoes in 2026 to help me stand upright in a world that's increasingly tilting.

I've been shooting at this usually swampy area a lot, because it's a rare opportunity to get closer to the cypress trees that grow here. What is usually 6" to a foot of water is literally dry enough to walk on.
Even the mighty Mississippi River is at record-setting low water levels, because of the long lasting drought. My Flickr friends up north may have some supply issues this Winter, because of this.
Looking through old stuff, I thought this was a rusted rivet at first. Nope. A natural formation on tree bark. You'll want to blow this one up to enjoy the texture better... :)

This was actually just a test shot taken through a window to see how well the lens performed at an extremely high iso. Playing around in post and pushing the saturation and vibrance levels, I ended up with this.

Poznań is a Polish city that we spent a few days visiting on our autumn tour. I was particularly taken with the elegant arch of the bridge at Poznań Gate on Cathedral Island. I used it for a digital handicraft project.
I was surprised at the Fall colors I found just a few days ago as we wait for the coming week of freezing temps of Winter. This tree, in particular was really eye-catching. We've had late Falls before, but I really don't remember any that lasted up to January!
With the highs today predicted to be near 80 degrees, we're supposed to get freezing temps for the rest of the coming week.
We don't really have that many large barns around Baton Rouge, so, when you find one, it's kind of a big deal for photographers. I was thrilled to happen across this one.

Had an opportunity to get some lightning shots last night. I kept hearing the thunder outside my house, but didn't realize until it was almost over that it wasn't raining and I could actually set up in a decent location to catch some bolts.
I almost missed the whole thing, but managed to get this shot, along with a couple of others, before the storm moved totally away. It was quite a show!
BTW...this is a single exposure.
