I must admit that the view is relaxing and harmonious, and bathed in a soft, rosy light - which are definitely a bunch of good ingredients for a good early morning shot - but what struck a chord with me was the bright wake left by the swimming moorhen. The bird was going her way, unaware of me, and in doing so she was leaving a shining wake - taking on the first lights of the day - a track for me to follow towards a deeper meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything - possibily something more meaningful than Fourty-two... :-)

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

Tiny bottleship (about 4 cm long) bought as a souvenir.

I placed it in front of the window to get some light behind the sails, no other light source. I wasn't quite content with the outcome and used the vignette and grainyness for an "old look".

Waratah Falls on the Waratah River in the middle of the small town of Waratah...

Waratah is a former tin mining community on the West Coast of Tasmania. It is quite adjacent to the incomparable Tarkine Wilderness coast and rainforest.

The river has been used to power mining machinery for most of the previous century. First by gravity then by hydro-electric generation.

The surreal, southern flanks of Snæfellsjökull Volcano on Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland.

Snæfellsjökull stands at 1446m with its last recorded eruption approximately 200CE.

The peak/icecap was wreathed in cloud the whole time we were travelling around it and most of the day was grey and drizzly. In the late afternoon, Mr Sun finally got below the clag and lit up the fabulous lava flows on the flanks of the volcano.

Háahraun and Seljahraun lava fields left and right of that bald hillock in the center.

Have previously posted a full colour version of this scene but the mono always called. From the archives, September 2017.

The well-glaciated mountain of Hafursfell (697m) dominates Route 54 when driving east (or west) on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland.

I've read it called 'The Blessed Hands' somewhere and I'd love to see it in snow. There are no less than five glacial cirques around the mountain and the many successive layers of basalt, tuff and Rhyolite really do highlight the volcanic, geological history of Iceland. The big cirque of Skál is mid-frame and the sharp arête of Þrihnúkar to the right of it.

Strato cumulus indicate a nice moderation in the weather!
