Blankenburg/Harz Saxony-Anhalt GER
Blankenburg (Harz) is a town and health resort in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at the north foot of the Harz Mountains, 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Halberstadt.
It has been in large part rebuilt since a fire in 1836, and possesses a castle, with various collections, a museum of antiquities, an old town hall and churches. Gardening is a speciality. The nearby ridge of rocks called the Teufelsmauer (Devils Wall) offers views across the plain and into the deep gorges of the Harz.

We get later in the year, I find myself going back over the photos I've shot, and sometimes I find a few I've missed. This is one of those, shot on picturesque South Boundary Avenue here in my town.

Like so many, we experience cabin fever after spending a month at home in isolation. We escaped to nature at a nearby trail in Cupertino, California. Right now it is lush green. Soon it will turn golden brown, here simulated with a filter.
I processed a balanced, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and added an "Indian Summer" Color Efex Pro 2 filter for a fall color scene. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

A pattern-welded blade by Pete Mattila of Hobart.
This particular blade is one of a trio of such hand-forged pieces created by Pete, artist, designer and blacksmith.
Pattern-welded steel is often mistakenly referred to as 'Damascus steel' but there are notable differences in production techniques, chemical composition and metallurgy in a historical sense. Sufficient differences in fact to start whole wars on blade smithing forums so not going there... :-)
This particular blade is made from railway steel and another, higher carbon steel being forced together under extreme temperature and pressure - either by press or hammer.
The unique banding in this one-piece blade comes from the many layers being twisted very tightly together at the end of the welding process and when close to white hot. The blade shape has then been hammer forged out of the circular blank. The twisting is visible in the handle.
They are a very pretty blade after pickling in acid then strong coffee :-)

The surreal, southern flanks of Snæfellsjökull Volcano on Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland.
Snæfellsjökull stands at 1446m with its last recorded eruption approximately 200CE.
The peak/icecap was wreathed in cloud the whole time we were travelling around it and most of the day was grey and drizzly. In the late afternoon, Mr Sun finally got below the clag and lit up the fabulous lava flows on the flanks of the volcano.
Háahraun and Seljahraun lava fields left and right of that bald hillock in the center.
Have previously posted a full colour version of this scene but the mono always called. From the archives, September 2017.

This was taken on one of our club photowalks recently, at 6pm there was an almighty storm with lightning, thunder, lashing rain and high winds and I was sat at home thinking "do I really want to go out in this?"... the weather forecast stated it was going to clear up so I headed out anyway and we found that no only did the storm pass but it left us with the most calm and gentle evening. At least this meant I had my favourite red umbrella to play with on the beach!

In fact, I captured this one in daylight, but unfortunately it has camera shake... Nevertheless, I like the dark mood. :))

Hafnarfjall (841m) from Hotel Hafnarfjall, Borgarnes. There was some pretty spectacular light this particular evening as the sun slipped below the cloud ceiling we'd been under all day.
The mountain is on the other side of Route 1 from the hotel and there are some cars and poles alongside on the highway through the lower third of the frame.
I believe the peak at the left is Klaustertunguhóll (719m).

Using a tracker seems to make the ''front palate' blue recede and allows much deeper tones to come through. Things go a bit weird if I play with the WB so leaving it alone for now.

An archive frame from 2020 but playing with blending the foreground with the sky. Worth noting that the two frames were taken mid to late blue hour - hence the MWC is quite low on the horizon still and quite muffled by the Earth's atmosphere.
There is a damn streetlight a ways behind the camera that lights up the poles and plays havoc with the white balance as well...
Scottsbluff was a happy detour for us on our first trip out west in 2016. The expansive national monument celebrates the pioneers of the past who followed the Oregon Trail through this area using the rock formations as their guides. To this day, you can still see the wagon ruts left behind by the thousands who searched for a better life in the West.

From the archives - a gloomy old day in the West Country with this image from Restormel Castle, Lostwithiel, Cornwall.
I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what sort of tree this one is but hopefully someone will help me out. It sits right beside the ruined, circular castle keep. The dark slope to the right is the castle moat.
Didn't really get any good images of the castle itself even though it is worth a visit if you're hanging around that part of Cornwall.

We'd previously been up on Bodmin Moor and we thought we'd have a look here on the way to Fowey. Not much of a day but we're used to that!

Unusual rock formations at low tide - Denison Beach, Bicheno Tasmania. Have been back to this location twice since this image was taken but the rocks have been hidden under the sand.
Also, something I hadn't noticed before is how badly smeared the edges are with the combination of Nikon glass on Sony body. Clearly something in the adaption of an otherwise amazingly sharp lens on its native mount. However, I don't think it detracts too badly from all the action in the centre.

From the Styx Road - looking north-west towards the Florentine Valley. The Mount Field National Park is just under all the mist and clag at the top right.
Forestry has ever been contentious in Tasmania. In the recent past, vast swathes of this landscape have been extensively logged - once selectively for timber then clear-felled - again mostly for timber but for a while it was government subsidised wood-chipping. $1/tonne...
The evidence of successive logging can be seen among all the coups, regrowth and plantations of the foreground. This particular landscape was once home to the some of the tallest trees on planet Earth.
Rivalling the Redwoods of California, Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) can reach over 100m in height.
Maybe one day the mindset of dig it up or cut it down for short term profit will be as gone as the great, breathing forest that once stood right here in front of you.

The galaxy core emerges through the clutter of our pitifully thin atmosphere to remind us that we are just specs of cosmic dust. Mercury Passage and Maria Island make the foreground.
Eight frame stitch pano with Contax-Zeiss G45/2 Planar Frankenzeiss modded to M mount and fixed to Nikon Z.
Not the best astro lens - lots of little chromatic aberration butterflies in the corners of each frame and a dandy collection of spherical aberration in the centres. I just wanted to see how it would handle astro so I could discount it from the "night bag". Zeiss colour tho :-)
