Il existe trois sous-espèces de Fous de Bassan (Morus Bassanus) dans le monde : l’une d’elles se trouve le long de la côte sud de l’Afrique, une autre en Tasmanie et en Nouvelle-Zélande, et l’autre dans l’Atlantique Nord.

Le plumage de l’adulte est d’un blanc éblouissant. Une bande étroite de couleur grise encercle les yeux, mais la pointe des ailes est d’un noir de jais. Pendant la saison de nidification, la tête et le cou de l’oiseau prennent une délicate nuance jaune safran. Les yeux sont bleu clair, et le bec est bleu ou gris-bleu.

À l’automne, les jeunes ont le plumage brun rayé et tacheté de blanc. Au fil des saisons, le plumage pâlit; il présente la teinte blanche de l’adulte vers la quatrième ou la cinquième année.

Dear friends, this is the second post of a photo taken with my new D750. I am still struggling up the learning curve and, apparently, I have to get accustomed to the photos taken with this new camera - very much better, actually another world, but somehow different from those those taken with my good old D5100.

I am not at all satisfied of this shot, another one plagued by ghosts from wind (I had not realised that there was wind, at the time). And I do not love the colours of the clouds; I have tried to better them, but alas, one sometimes has to surrender. Maybe this is not a good time for postprocessing - too much stress, too much sadness - a time devoid of good things. Exhaustion. However I would hope to get from you constructive criticism about this photo and the processing.

I have obtained this picture by blending a 5-exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

The well-glaciated mountain of Hafursfell (697m) dominates Route 54 when driving east (or west) on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland.

I've read it called 'The Blessed Hands' somewhere and I'd love to see it in snow. There are no less than five glacial cirques around the mountain and the many successive layers of basalt, tuff and Rhyolite really do highlight the volcanic, geological history of Iceland. The big cirque of Skál is mid-frame and the sharp arête of Þrihnúkar to the right of it.

Strato cumulus indicate a nice moderation in the weather!

Waratah Falls on the Waratah River in the middle of the small town of Waratah...

Waratah is a former tin mining community on the West Coast of Tasmania. It is quite adjacent to the incomparable Tarkine Wilderness coast and rainforest.

The river has been used to power mining machinery for most of the previous century. First by gravity then by hydro-electric generation.

The quite remarkable Cirque de Lescun in the Apse Valley, French Pyrenees. Just out of shot to the right is the very pretty village of Lescun.

This frame is from very deep in the archives and shows that while my editing might possibly have picked up a bit in 8 years, the value of having quality, exposure data in the RAW files is more than important.

The light was pretty challenging with massive storm cells forming overhead but off in the distance the cliffs were in full sun.

I knew nothing then but had I known the importance of protecting highlights perhaps this may have been a different frame. That said, I could easily have replaced the sky but what would that have meant for the vibe on the day?

We were treated to a totally wild, 12 hour storm that night which left even the locals thunderstruck... Also, there's some fabulous Jurassic cheese to be had in the Apse Valley :-P
