Captured in China Town, Manchester, this high‑contrast black‑and‑white photograph frames the narrow, scaffolding‑lined passage as a stage for everyday movement. The steep perspective draws the eye deep into the alley, where industrial pipes, weathered brickwork, and urban clutter create a textured, layered backdrop. Two figures cut through the frame—one pulling a suitcase, the other striding past—their motion blurred to echo the constant flow of city life. The image explores the tension between stillness and transit, old architecture and ongoing change, revealing how even the most overlooked urban spaces hold stories of arrival, departure, and the quiet rhythm of the city.

An archive frame from July 2014 - I went looking for a couple of frames from back then to compare against the ones I took this year. Decided to work this one in mono.

Digging around in the archives again looking for some inspiration in the frames that were passed over back in the day. The main reason being they were simply beyond my skill to edit for one aspect or another... :|

Here we have the Aldeyjarfoss waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót River, Northeast Iceland. The falls can be reached just off the F26 (F842) 30k south of Goðafoss or on the less popular side (this shot) via a 30 min walk off the F843.

Hard to make out but there are four or five togs on the other side on and below that flat ledge on the right. Part of a photo tour that arrived as we were shooting.

You can tell it's the summer hols - I'm posting every day. Sometimes that aint a good thing.

This was taken a few months ago at Studley Royal, next to Fountains Abbey. It's been rinsed through most of the Nik Collection progs and the file size is now quite spectacular.

It's one of the offspring in a hollow tree stump. Possibly the eldest.

Wandering through the Japan archive to find this colour version of Mt Ena or Ena-san (2191m) from Magome Post Town on the Nakasendo Way. Have previously posted mainly monos of this remarkable view.

Ena-san is but one mountain peak of the Kiso Mountain Range in the Chubu region of Japan and is located on the border between Nakatsugawa, in Gifu Prefecture and Achi, in Nagano Prefecture.

Ena-san is on the top 100 list of Japanese mountains and is part of the very scenic Japanese Alps in central Honshu.

I love the way this shot captures the sheer force of the water against the stationary weight of the stone lock.

Keeping detail in the dark, wet stone while freezing the highlights of the churning water. The red hull really provides that perfect pop of colour to anchor the composition.

Swanage Pier is a Victorian pier which extends into the southern end of Swanage Bay near the town of Swanage, in the south-east of Dorset. It was built in 1895 for passenger ship services. It is situated on the eastern coast of the Isle of Purbeck, approximately 6+1⁄4 miles (10.1 km) south of Poole and 25 miles (40 km) east of Dorchester in the United Kingdom.

An older pier, opened 1860, was used by local quarries to ship stone, but it fell into decline with only its timber piles remaining today. [Source: Wikipedia]

Macro Mondays: Backlit

Tiny bottleship (about 4 cm long) bought as a souvenir.

I placed it in front of the window to get some light behind the sails, no other light source. I wasn't quite content with the outcome and used the vignette and grainyness for an "old look".

These Eastern Water Dragons would have to be one of my favourite critters.

Captured at Rosser Park, Botanic Gardens, Gold Coast, Queensland.

The Cairns Birdwing butterfly is the largest of all Australian butterflies and found along north eastern Australia from Mackay to Cooktown.

Its scientific name is Ornithoptera euphorion

Many thanks to all my Flickr photo stream followers I have now more than 1.8 million views, thank you. Thanks for viewing my photos and for any favourites and comments, it is very much appreciated.

I love scrolling through Flickr looking at everyone's images, getting new ideas.

The burning Bifröst rainbow bridge between Midgard and Asgard hangs open over Kírkjufell, Snaefellsnes Peninsular, Iceland.

Archive pic of a spectacular Aurora Borealis event, from 28 September 2017 getting a dust off. A bit happier with my editing some years on but still having a few noise issues.

Kírkjufell is partially lit up by the sodium vapor lamps of Grundarfjörður town to the right, behind the camera - hence the grungy green/brown colour of the mountain. A half moon was hanging in there too somewhere to the west along with quite a deal of thin cloud resulting in reduced contrast in some of the beams.

The faint white spot at extreme left is near the carpark for the famous Kírkjufoss waterfall. Apparently there was a total scrum over there at the time with lots of rude photographers being not at all collegial.

I knew it would be a shambles at the waterfall so gave it a miss and shot this from an empty carpark just outside town. At one point the display was so intense I just stopped taking pictures and lay on the grass looking up (and feeling incredibly small :-)

This tree intrigues me every time I walk by. It is a majestic specimen and seems to accentuate the mood of the season.

This shot taken with my phone camera and tweaked in Lightroom and Google's Nik Collection to get a minimalistic feel.

Skippool is an area of Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire, England. It is situated between Little Thornton and Poulton-le-Fylde along the western banks of the River Wyre, about three miles south of its mouth between Fleetwood and Knott End. These banks are known as Skippool Creek, an historic docks area now home to mostly run-down vessels. The MV Good Hope, for example, may date from the 1830s. Skippool Creek is a short branch off Main Dyke, which empties into the River Wyre in front of Blackpool and Fleetwood Yacht Club.

The B5412 (Skippool Road) passes through Skippool, ending at the roundabout it shares with Mains Lane, Breck Road and Amounderness Way.

Skippool is believed to be a joining of the Old Norse word skip, which means ship, and the Old English pull/pol, for a slow-moving stream. It has been written on historical maps as Skippon, Skiffe-Pool and Skip Pool. Wikipedia

I must admit that the view is relaxing and harmonious, and bathed in a soft, rosy light - which are definitely a bunch of good ingredients for a good early morning shot - but what struck a chord with me was the bright wake left by the swimming moorhen. The bird was going her way, unaware of me, and in doing so she was leaving a shining wake - taking on the first lights of the day - a track for me to follow towards a deeper meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything - possibily something more meaningful than Fourty-two... :-)

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

It was a drizzly, rainy day yesterday. You can still find beauty if you look.

Snow geese coming in for a landing. They were a joy to watch. Taking flight and landing over and over again. Even though it was a bitter day (for these parts), my sister and I sat in one spot for the better part of 2 hours transfixed by their activity!

Oscar will sit for photos, but if there is a bird or squirrel he is on guard.
