Where the river runs, life's story unfolds in fluid motion. It carves its path, a serpentine journey through the heart of the land, carrying with it the essence of time. Like a wandering troubadour, it weaves tales of the earth, whispering secrets to the banks it caresses. The river mirrors the ebbs and flows of existence, mirroring the trials and triumphs encountered along the way. Its current, a steady force, encapsulates the essence of resilience and adaptability, navigating obstacles, sculpting the terrain, and symbolizing the ceaseless passage of moments. In its waters lie reflections of life’s journey — a reminder that as the river runs, so does the narrative of our lives, ever-flowing and ever-evolving.

It's around 3:15pm on June 11, 2021 on a sunny day, perfect for a different take on the Empire Builder as it navigates through Saint Paul down seven hours. Here it works through the Minnesota Commercial yard in the Midway neighborhood.

The occasional yacht or sailboat going between the Gulf of Mexico and Charlotte Harbor beneath the setting sun made for great photography opportunities over the Christmas holiday. We were staying in the resort which comprised the second floor of the beautiful Fishermen's Village in Punta Gorda... and I spent our stay there virtually with the camera in my hands.

The Pittsburgh Sub of the W&LE in the first few miles out of Rook is a very rocky, twisty, tough area to navigate, and hard to access for a lot of it. The 614 job is on its way to Tube City and Clairton on this day, seen winding it's way through the rocks.

A setting looking to the west while taking in views across the white sands and dried up lake present along this part of the Alkali Flat Trail in White Sands National Park. I had two thoughts in mind in capturing this image. One was to capture a look across the flat landscape to my front with this dried up lake. The other was the peculiar display of clouds present above the ridges and peaks of the San Andres Mountains. I decided to more or less center those mountains and cloud formations in the image.

Today I found the place I was looking for last month. In this area there are a total of some 70 raised stones spread across a long ridge. Some are more visible like these while otheres are a lot smaller. The whole are was a farming area more than 1000 years ago and some of the stones were burial markers, some are said to be from an old church and others were just gathered to clear the land for farming.

There were plenty of cow pats to navigate around as the field is still used for cows.

A trio of Siemens ALC-42s bring the Empire Builder into Saint Paul and through the Minnesota Commercial Yard to gain access to the CPKC Merriam Park Subdivision. The thick snowfall added a layer of complexity to the already slow slog through the yard area here - adding about 10 extra minutes from the usual 15-20 minutes or transit time. I cannot figure out why the move through the yard here needs to be so slow and only seems to get slower. There are three potential switch points, and none of them are complicated. At the same time, who am I to judge?

After a week of heavy rain the dam at Leixlip on the Liffey is opened to release pressure. The result is heaven for the local canoeists! This one was taken just below the Palmerstown weir, a few kilometres below the dam.

Finally with all of our slow pace, we reached the top of the building.

Having zero interest in day time photography can be difficult. Darkness and quiet can be hard to navigate in; every movement makes a noise, every step needs careful thought. It also leads to a lot of jealousy. Photographers who get to enjoy the freedom of the day can get spectacular shots that are difficult to capture at night.

Years ago, I saw a shot some urbex-person had taken of himself right here. Ever since I have wanted to be there myself, to try and better him.

So, it was a huge sense of achievement that washed over me. And what a sight, too- the huge roofs, damaged beyond repair with nature bursting through every seam.

Whilst the cement works have been visited many times, it can't be said that many of them were at 2am. I think these shots at least partly set me apart from everyone else. I hope so.

As always, I'm interested in interacting with photographers on social media... Facebook or Twitter
