Somewhere in the Keystone Co. area. Must be 18 to qualify, void where prohibited.

As its name suggests, the red-eyed tree frog has red eyes with vertically narrowed pupils. It has a vibrant green body with yellow and blue, vertically striped sides. Its webbed feet and toes are orange or red. The skin on the red-eyed tree frog's belly is soft and fragile, whereas the back is thicker and rougher. Red-eyed tree frogs have sticky pads on their toes. They spend a majority of their lives in trees; they are excellent jumpers. Red-eyed tree frogs are not poisonous and rely on camouflage to protect themselves. During the day, they remain motionless, cover their blue sides with their back legs, tuck their bright feet under their bellies, and shut their red eyes. Thus, they appear almost completely green, and well hidden among the foliage.

And a chorus of different names and languages sounded like exploding bombs

The genus name Delphinium derives from the Ancient Greek word δελφίνιον (delphínion) which means "dolphin", a name used in De Materia Medica for some kind of larkspur.

[Pedanius Dioscorides said the plant got its name because of its dolphin-shaped flowers.

I did not know this -

are the flowers actually dolphin shaped ?

will have to look more closely

if I encounter them

(which is rarely )

and who is Pedanius Dioscorides ?

Pedanius Dioscorides (Ancient Greek: Πεδάνιος Διοσκουρίδης, Pedánios Dioskourídēs; c. 40–90 AD), "the father of pharmacognosy", was a Greek physician, pharmacologist, botanist, and author of De materia medica (in the original Ancient Greek: Περὶ ὕλης ἰατρικῆς, Peri hulēs iatrikēs, both meaning "On Medical Material") , a 5-volume Greek encyclopedic pharmacopeia on herbal medicine and related medicinal substances, that was widely read for more than 1,500 years. For almost two millennia Dioscorides was regarded as the most prominent writer on plants and plant drugs.

The name Talkin comes from the Celtic name 'Talcan' which means brow of a hill. Tarn or 'Tjorn' is Norse for small teardrop lake.

Talkin Tarn was formed by the force of glaciers 10,000 years ago. The ice carved the landscape leaving the natural bowl which filled with water as the glaciers melted. The tarn is constantly topped up by natural freshwater springs which bubble up from below

Named in honour of the French naturalist and ornithologist, Jean Victor Audouin (1797 – 1841) the Audouin’s gull is one of the world’s rarest and is limited in the main to regions within and surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.

It is a beautiful bird smaller and thinner than the herring gull. Once it is fully grown you can't mistake it when you see it because it's feathers are pearl grey, it has a beautiful, coral-red beak with a black tip at the end , Another unique characteristic it has is the lead-grey colour of its legs, very different to the yellow of the legs of the Mediterranean Herring Gull.

Taken on a beach (Platja de Tamarit) in Spain

Its strange name notwithstanding, Scarlet Mallow - which obviously is not scarlet - is a beautiful wildflower that grows in scattered locations across the northern prairie, but seems to love ditches and road margins best. I don't even know what to call that colour. Tangerine? I think it has more red in it than straight orange. Yes, it probably should have been named Tangerine Mallow. A specimen of this plant was collected by none other than Meriwether Lewis during his famous voyage with William Clark and the Corps of Discovery (1804-1806).

Still eight or nine square-crop wildflower photos to upload, which is why I am offering two per day, double my normal pace. I want to get to other things. Still, it has been some time since I put up a flower series. If feels right to give them their due appreciation for brightening up the spring and early summer prairie.

The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). A 1610 map depicts the name as Manna-hata, twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River). The word "Manhattan" has been translated as "island of many hills" from the Lenape language.

New York County is one of seven counties in the United States to share the same name as the state in which they are located. The others are Arkansas, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Utah counties.

The United States Postal Service prefers that mail addressed to Manhattan use "New York, NY" rather than "Manhattan, NY"

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper

Scientific name: Calidris acuminata

Named the bird, William, the conkerer! A bold and perky bird that often perches conspicuously, this one on a flat top rubbish bin, with a wind fall conker and shell, to give a great autumnal feel to it. The image was from my week in France. (My thanks to Graham, Hammerchewer!) for the name.
