The Foam-Coarsening experiment ran a new batch of cartridges in the Fluid Sciences Laboratory of the European Columbus module.

The experiment began in April to study foams in depth under the more stable conditions afforded by microgravity on the International Space Station.

The cell cartridges contain a mixture of soap and water. Bubbles are generated by moving a piston at high speed. The foam is observed for up to 100 hours, during which the foam bubbles become larger but less in number. This process slows down over time so measurements are stopped when five bubbles are formed in each cell section. The results are analysed with laser optics and high-resolution cameras.

The new batch contains the same water and soap mixture but with a difference in the amount of liquid in the cell. Producing foams in a different concentration allows researchers to study how the bubbles enlarge (or coarsen).

What is so special about foam? Besides appearing in your food and drink, foams are also found in sealing products, cosmetics and personal hygiene products, and even construction. They are lighter, offer better insulation and can be just as strong as compact materials.

Observing foams on Earth is tricky because the mixture of gas and liquid that makes up a foam quickly starts to change. Gravity pulls the liquid between the bubbles downwards, and the small bubbles shrink while the larger ones tend to grow at the expense of others. Due to drainage, coarsening (or enlarging) and rupture of the bubbles, a foam starts to collapse back to a liquid state.

But in space foams are more stable because the liquid does not drain in weightlessness. This allows scientists to study the phenomena of a bubble slowly becoming bigger and bursting, which on Earth are masked by the drainage that destabilises the foam.

Deeper insights into the behaviour of foams makes for better applications of its use on Earth. Besides improving food production, foams can also be metallic and have incredible structural characteristics. Aluminium foam, for example, is as strong as pure metal but much lighter. This research can help in the construction of light-weight and sturdy aerospace structures and new shielding systems for diagnostic radiology equipment in hospitals.

The Foam-Coarsening experiment was developed by Airbus for ESA. The experiment is controlled and data collected by the Belgian User Operations Centre in Brussels, Belgium.

Yorkshire Tiger YX65 RKK 500 *Demo*

Fleet: 500

Reg: YX65 RKK

Operator: Yorkshire Tiger

Route: 737 - Bradford Interchange

Depot: Idle

Livery: ADL Demo

Type: Alexander Dennis Enviro 200 MMC

Location: Leeds Bradford Airport

Notes: Yorkshire Tiger (Idle) have acquired this ADL Enviro 200 MMC on demo this week. The company is believed to have ordered six of these for work on their airport routes 737 & 747, it is being used so that drivers can become familiar with the bus before the new batch arrives in March/ April.

Here it sits in Leeds Bradford Airport after running from Bradford. It is not quite to my taste but is better than certain alternatives on the market.

Continuing the theme of Metro Geminis, and flash forward two years to 2017 and another new batch of double deckers arrived into Metro- in the form of the Gemini 3 with the stealth front. These were initially pressed into service on Cruise Ship Shuttles at the start of the summer, but then eventually ended up in their correct garages operating normal services.

2126 is noted here in May of this year operating one such shuttle.

A new batch of 6 plus mom just arrived yesterday. Let the cuteness begin!

*NEW* VH45256 LC67ADX is seen here on the 285 it is a new batch of Gemini 3 mark 2 for the 635 there is 3 of them which 2 of are in service.

After riding this these are actually very good buses.

A new batch of 4 Speeder Bikes. Hope you'll like them ;-)

New batch of Ork prototypes.

What do you think?

The 110 service from Leeds-Wakefield-Kettlethorpe-Hall Green has seen many new and enhanced vehicles being used, for passenger comfort. In the days of the old West Riding post deregulation, improved Leyland Olympians with ECW bodies were used. Until the arrival of the 1999 batch of Optare Spectra bodied DAF SB250LCs, which were quickly followed by at batch of Optare Spectra/DAF SB250LCs in 2002. The next new influx of vehicles arrived in 2008 with Optare Olympus bodied Volvo B9TLs, again branded for the 110. Optare had at the time acquired the form Blackburn based East Lancashire bus body builders, before absorbing the company.

By now Arriva how had successfully acquired the former West Riding operation during the latter end of the 1990's had taken an option of using a low height Wrightbus body on a DAF chassis, which was developed as an integral 2DL. Forty one of this new type for Arriva Yorkshire arrived in February 2012, after a morning photoshoot at Temple Newsham. Passengers arrived in the morning peak on the out going Optare/Volvo buses. By 14:30 the new branded integral 2DLs were arriving into Leeds to take passengers home on brand new buses.

During 2013 Arriva had developed a new high specification vehicle to enhance the passenger experience, Sapphire. This new level of service arrived into Yorkshire in April 2015, with a batch of ADL E400s exclusively for the 110, in a stunning livery.

Now in 2019 the first of a new batch of vehicles are slowly arriving into service on this main route between Leeds and Wakefield. These are the Wrightbus integral Streetdeck, designed with Daimler and using a 5.1 litre Mercedes Benz engine. These new buses are of a low height configuration, just like the Go-Ahead examples used in Oxford.

Here 1576 is seen arriving at Kettlethorpe, before pausing at the terminus.

Hoya flowers of this variety develop on special spurs, with all the buds developing and blossoming at once. These will then fall off and a new batch of buds will develop on the same spur.

The dark leaf veins would seem to indicate nutrient deficiency. I am just a novice!

Finally got to drive one of the new batch. I have to say from a drivers perspective it's such a awkward bus to drive with the voith gearbox and sensitive retarder.

Also it's extremely annoying in the sense that the indicator or any buzzer for that matter sounds like a life support machine and the bell which rings four times per press is so irritating.

It's nice to have new buses in Scarborough they really do look stylish and modern, it's just a shame there a let down to drive.

excited with this new batch of upstarts

I wish these birds lived in Kansas all year long but they arrive in late April have a new batch of orioles and head out in September.

Volvo B7RLE's are now the main stay of the 144 service, although a newer batch than 66976, KX05MGZ which has since moved to Essex. 66976 was new to Leicester and has passed between Worcester and Leicester throughout its earlier life.

Although the 46 doesn't change operators tomorrow, it is due a brand new batch of electricADL Enviro 200 MMCs, which will cascade the existing buses elsewhere. In more recent times, some Metroline West buses have been transferred over from Willesden Junction (WJ)and used on the 46, as some of the existing vehicles were required for the 491 contract last week.

DE1617, one of the recent transfers, is seen at Lancaster Gate. Many thanks also to the driver who decided to stand in front of the bus for the entirety of his break, which meant I could not obtain an offside here unlike the 274, which will be uploaded at the appropriate time.

Stagecoach Gold 94 10749. AD E40D/Enviro 400MMC. The one that was avoiding me - having photographed the rest of the new batch of Golds for the 94,this one was difficult to find, but here it is arriving in Cheltenham - 8.12.16.

'Unique' (at present) 66751 passes Asfordby on 6th February 2015 with the 6M60 Whitemoor - Mountsorrel stone train formed of IOA box wagons. I must say, the lighting arrangement on 66751 and 750 is much smarter than on the new batch and later builds of 66/7...

Greater Glasgow PTEs last new batch of 10 Leyland Atlanteans LA1440 to 1449 were built by June 1981 and all were due to carry UGB 193-202W registrations. However not all had entered service by the end of July and 7 of them voided their registrations and received CSU/X plates. They were all in service by October 1981.

2 of the 10 are seen along with some of the RDS/SUS batch at the Leyland Test Centre in Glasgow in June 1981

McGill's G3328, BX64 WJN, a Euro 6 Mercedes Benz Citaro, is currently operating out of Inchinnan on the busy 101 service between Braehead, Renfrew and Paisley. G3328 can normally be found working from Greenock on ClydeFlyer duties, as per the route branding, so it is unusual to see it working the 101. I wouldn't have thought there would be a shortage of vehicles at Inchinnan (plenty of X23 Geminis normally parked up) so it is an unusual one. A new batch of Citaros are supposed to be due this year for the 23, so may be in preparation for their arrival, perhaps, although I'd have thought if that was the case it would be on the 23. Pulsars I6001 and I6002 have lost their 23 branding maybe indicating new buses are coming soon.

Also, new scanner! Mainly upgraded from the V600 for the ability to scan 4x5", but quality is significantly better. Also, scanning is much faster with an extra V700 holder that allows me to load a new holder while scanning and also lets you scan six 6x6 frames in one go. Can't really see any quality degradation on the ones scanned in the glass holder so far, which is nice.

Folkestone's Route 16 had been previously been a Stagecoach Gold service with the last new batch of vehicles ordered for the route being Scania E400s in late 2014.

Eleven new E400s are to replace those with the first four all entering service in early August, followed by seven more due next month.

Colours and patterns arising from the interference of reflected light rays on a thin film of water and soap held in a tiny frame (a 'bubble wand'). The inner circle which I use for these photos measures 18mm. Colours slightly brightened in Photoshop - otherwise entirely natural..

Second of a new batch of soap experiments using a coconut shampoo which I bought recently. I used it undiluted and it was so thick that it took a long time to burst - up to half an hour in fact!

The new batch of Otokar/Kent C BUS 834 - BUS 861 have arrived and most if not all have now entered service.

At least two are branded for the airport services, but unfortunately I didn't manage to get a photograph of them on this trip.

As part of the massive "1935 - 1940 New Works Programme" of investment works undertaken by London Transport a new batch of cars for the sub-surface Hammersmith & City line was ordered and arrived in 1937/8 classified as O-stock. In time, in common with all sub-surface stocks at the period, the O-stock was reformed alongside extisting and subsequently delivered units and ran on other associated lines.

This interior shot shows the spacious interiors with high headrooms and the hint of the much earlier clerestory designs seen particularly on District Railway/District line stock and that was a common feature of earlier train design. Much use was made of timber here - side panelling as well as the slatted floors that used to be a real feature of LT's trains. The seats, generous in design, are covered in one of the moquette fabrics commissioned from the famous designer Enid Marx by LT's publicity manager Christian Barman. This design was known as "Brent" and was of red diamonds on a green background and so much have looked wonderful!

The adverts include two for London Transport itself - the latest editions of timetable booklets and one for renting flats int he luxurious Chiltern Court block of apartments. This still surviving residential block on Baker St sist above the station and had been speculatively constructed by the old Metropolitan Railway to help finance the station reconstruction and so had passed to LT in 1933 when the Met became part of the new LPTB.
