I keep getting asked to post my "setup" while on various forums and sites. While not the best picture I've taken, it does what I need it to do.

My network switch developed a dodgy capacitor on Friday, so I broke out the soldering iron on the advice of this page. This pic has just been uploaded through it, so we're back in action!

So far, 802.11n is the best until the 802.11ac comes out in late 2012. However, it does have its downsides too, like the fact that the standard is not yet fully finalized, which leads consumers to think that it may not be as advantageous in the real world as it sounds.

You can tell when the IT Guy wants to impress you by showing off the server room.

Here at home, I have (left to right) - cable modem; Netgear Router (only used to format pirate boxes); Apple Airport Extreme (serves a closed and guest network); and a new 3 TM Western Digital My Book hard drive-- the latter is plugged into the Airport so it can do regular Time Machine backups.

Slightly edited shot of a severe case of Gadget-mania breaking out in my house in Amsterdam. Taken with my Panasonic DMC-FZ8. No editing besides some added contrast&saturation, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)

I've mentioned it last week, I've bought some new Gadgets to enhance my Multimedia options and make full use of the wicked possibilities that the Interwebs and the 21st Century in general throw our way...so, to show you how I managed to get my YouTube puddle reflection movies onto my new 32 Inch Flat screen TV (yay :))), follow the white rabbit photos, and enjoy watching how I connected my living room to that obscure online world we all love so much ... :)

Step 3: Free the serious Storage unit from its little prison and connect it to your PC where you can fill it with movies that you've downloaded illegaly from the Net movies that you have purchased legally in a shop...

Part of our new home network setup is a new shiny wireless N router. Why? Because we can! Oh, and because it allows us to upload movies to our Mac Mini Media Centre faster.

I managed to put DD-WRT firmware on the machine this afternoon and planning to do some speed tests later this afternoon.

This is the front LCD display on the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ showing info like the local IP address and the total/free capacity.

This photo was taken after I re-initialised the NAS to RAID 5.

In this video, we will show you setup & installation steps of Netgear EX2700 WiFi Extender. Watch this video till the end and install your WiFi range extender to follow some steps.

Its 2011 and most homes still do not have Gigabit Ethernet. Come on people, 802.3ab came out in 1999 setting the standard for UTP CAT5e/6. If you do not have a 1,000,000,000 bps connection right now, what are you waiting for to upgrade?

This is the "command center" where all the cables from the building meet back up and connect to the network switch, server, router and the internet. The Netgear 100mb switch shown here will be replaced by a Linksys fully-managed 24-port gigabit switch next week.

Servers in my Den.

The white one on the top left is my old firewall. P3 600 w/ 384mb of ram, and a failing 20gb hdd running pfsense 1.2

The top right is the backup server.

Bottom left, on the floor is the new firewall. Athlon x2 4600+ w/ 2x 500gb hdds in raid1. I'm currently running smoothwall express 3, though thinking I'll swap back to pfsense since I prefer it a little more. I'll roll my own eventually. A lot more I want to do that I can't with any of the current firewall distros. I'll also be running a freeradius server, a print/scan server and a few other things in another VM.

The bottom middle server is my dev box. Currently a Q6600 w/ 8 gigs of ram and 3x 500gb hdds in raid 5. Next is the media box that streams 1080p blu ray goodness to my TV, with an ATI 4830 video card. I usually prefer nVidia video cards, but ATI has been wiping the floor with nvidia cards for a while now when it comes to HD. Soon I'll also have a Logitech MX Air mouse to better control my experience.

On the top shelf I've got a wrt54g running dd-wrt (probably stick tomato on it later, as it seems a little more to my liking.) Next is a Netgear 8 port unmanaged layer 2 switch, and lastly is currently my only means of getting on the web - a Motorola cable modem.

You'll also notice my laptop and a small usb hdd on the floor. I'm copying some stuff onto it for work tonight.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I have a 750va UPS running the old (soon to be new) firewall, and the networking gear on the top shelf. Then there's the Belkin 1200va UPS running the other three (well four for now) boxes. And in the back, behind the scenes in s Furman power filter. Those things are awesome. Not your typical one hit wonder surge bar. For those that think consumer grade UPSs from APC and belkin alike have awesome power filters. All I can say is that you're stupid... Seriously. I'm not even sorry to say that, it's the nicest thing I can say about you. Now go on and crawl up in a corner and cry yourself to sleep, all the while you wet yourself because you're just that ignorant. (there, that was better.)

I wanted to take some photos outside today but the wind was just too much. So for today's daily, I erected my background stands (glorified light stands) and put up a white sheet for the purpose of blowing it out.

I then placed a pair of white laminated boards about 5' from the background to create some reflection and to simulate that whole white seamless deal.

Gaffer tape was used to hold down the power cord and picking an angle that would would hide the rest.

First I metered for the front LEDs so that they would show up in the photo. After, I then started on the white background increasing the flash power till I blew out the background while preventing too much spill to the router.

Once happy with that I brought up the key light to expose the rest of the router.

Strobist info:

1 550EX 1/2 bare power pointed at white sheet

Picked up a recertified Netgear WRN2000 from Newegg for $24.99 to my door. I actually don't like Netgear products but for $25 I figured it would buy me time till I get an AirPort Extreme. I did notice that setup is rather slow and sometimes the WRN2000 takes forever to write in the changes you make.

Since the changes took forever I decided to take a photo of it for my daily.

Strobist info:

1 580EXII 1/8 power shoot through umbrella high camera right

1 550EX 1/2 bare power pointed at white sheet

Camera metered 1 stop under to expose the front LEDs of the WRN2000

Setup shot can be found here.

Wasn't sure if I already had this pic, I do, but this one is the best of them (the others are a little blue). I think my next upgrade is a UPS, I'm currently comparing a few models.

802.11g Router

The 802.11g wireless standard was first introduced back in 2002-2003. When it came out, its specific purpose was to boost the speed of wireless connections by combining the best of the 802.11a and 802.11b standards. Routers that connect via the 802.11g standard can support up to a 54Mbps bandwidth connection. However, keep in mind that these routers can only use the 2.4GHz frequency; the reason is to provide users with greater range and less sensitivity to obstruction.
