This is my Netgear WGR614v4 Wi-Fi hub/router, and its power supply. The latter weighs at least 2x the former. So the spot may be hot, but the supply is heavy. Much more than it needs to be, I'm sure.

Netgear R7000 11ac 1900Mbps 無線分享器

While dumpster diving, I found two free Netgear GS748Tv3 48-port gigabit managed ethernet switches that my company was throwing out. They're very capable, well-built, popular devices, and these were both in good condition. I love Netgear's metal switches, they work great and they last forever. The only problem is that this model is designed to live in a server room or datacenter, and they're loud as shit.

The original equipment contained three 40mm Delta fans (9000 RPM, 33–37 dbA, 9.5–10 CFM) and they always ran at 100%. I took each switch apart, threw out the old fans, and replaced them with pairs of SilenX iXtrema Pro IXP-11-14 fans (3500 RPM, 14 dBA, 5 CFM).

The old fans used two wires, but the new ones had an additional wire to allow the tachometers to be read. The wiring layout between these two configurations is different for some reason, so I had to unclip each of the connectors and reverse the order that the wires attached to the hardness. When you plug it in, the tachometer pin is left unattached, and the fan spins normally.

After this modification, the switches have gone from "I can't be in the same room as one" to "I might be able to fall asleep in the same room as one."

I didn't know where else to put these things. The gigabit switch, one (of two) of the external network-attached storage drives, and an aluminum subwoofer in the back.

Got a 1GB stick to install in my ReadyNAS NV+. Amazon has the best price on the Crucial RAM that's compatible.

The case comes off with screws in three sections. RAM snaps into a standard socket.

Netgear recommends running the memory test twice on new RAM before using it. Just hold the power button down until the 5th blink, the display wil read 25: Memory Test. Took about 3 hours to finish both cycles.

From left to right we have...

My old Sony Ericsson T616, the first phone I ever owned. Next is the Netgear Skype thingy, which can make Skype calls from any WiFi base station... pretty hawt. In the middle is the Helio Kickflip, which is plenty sexy, and fun to flip open, but a pain to use. Fourth is my "trusty" RAZR V3, which inexplicably stopped being able to hear people on the other end of the line, but otherwise works beautiful. Finally, the Motorola Q is one of the snazzier phones I've had in my possesion, and the true RAZR of smartphones.

Ever since I picked up my 5d mkII, I've been taking a lot more photos than I used to. I also don't back up my files much, so I've kind of been living precariously. Last week I picked up a ReadyNAS NV+ and finally got around to setting it up today. It takes up to 4 hard drives, RAIDs the data, and connects to your network, optionally allowing access to it over http. It's got a bunch of other pretty neat features too, but most importantly for me, it provides storage and backup for all my stuff. And Fry's is selling 1.5TB drives for $119. Pretty sweet.

In case anyone else is interested -- it came down to a decision between this and the Drobo. Both of them have their advantages. (I'm happy to geek out and discuss more if anyone is actually interested).

This is the "blinking light failure" common in these GS108 switches.
