My venerable 802.11b router has been on the fritz as of late, so I bought this refurbished MIMO unit (~$80 retail) for $37.99 at Fry's. It's way faster.

I personally replaced a netgear wrt54g with this.

I don't know what kind of luck you have had, but this is my third router since I got a cable modem. They seem to fail every couple of years. I have had both Linksys and Netgear, so it really does not seem to matter what kind one buys.

My issues always seem to start with websites not being found and when I do a refresh on a site I was just at, it cannot be found. Another refresh sometimes works while sometimes multiple refreshes or even starting IE over again. If I put off getting a new one, the internet eventually becomes unavailable at all. I did that last time.

For me, I guess the best router is the cheapest one at the moment of need. At the rate they fail, I am not going to spend the extra to get a fancy one. And I guess $40-$50 for 2-4 years service isn't too bad, so I cannot say any of the companies have bad stuff.

The sales clerk at the Staples where I got this one had some comments that made sense. He said these things have no active cooling inside and if they are used a lot they get too hot and fail about the rate I am experiencing. From what I see, these things don't even have much venting.

Since my last one has not gone completely belly-up, I am saving it in case this new one fails in a worse manner before I get to the store. After all, some refreshing is better than no Internet at all.

Bought the Netgear WGR614 for use in hostel. My laptop and development workstation need to share an internet connection. A 802.11b WEP router would have been cheaper but I got a 802.11g WPA so I could concentrate on development instead of monitoring script kiddies. Wanted NAT protection so didn't get a switch. The fact that it looks good is a bonus.

I replaced this broadband router a few years ago and it's been languishing in its box, just taking up space, ever since. It's time to move it on to someone who's actually going to use it.

The UK-spec RangeMax comes in its original box (still with original shrink-wrap), including original packaging and documentation. It is in almost-perfect condition (with no obvious scratches or signs of use other than a little dust) and was working just fine when last used. It comes with:

- Original UK power supply

- Base stand

- Phone cables

- Resource CD version 2.2

- ADSL filter

- Original manuals and paperwork

The Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router is infamous for overheating and flakey performance. At times it would lock up every 15 minutes.

I attached a heat sink to the router's main processor with thermal paste and setup a case fan to blow across the heat sink. The processor no longer operates very hot and this has cut down on the frequency which the router locks up.

My hack has not solved the issue but has made using this router more bearable as I save up to purchase a replacement.

The new Skype/DECT phone from Netgear. In test for JournalduGeek.com

This was cool, at work I installed a wireless adapter in to a wheel chair.

I think this says it all. Gave me a good giggle while waiting for my flight at Dulles, anyway.

All working in harmony. In the middle is the cable modem. To the left is my linksys wireless router. To the right is the new netgear gigabit switch I just added, with 5 of its 8 connections going off to the wall to link up wall sockets around the house

This is a night shot of my Netgear WDNR3700, running DD-WRT. When processing photos at night, I'll see it twinkling out of the corner of my eye.

Lightly processes with Camera+, added a little blur and pumped the saturation up a smidge.
