Some musically-themed photos for a rainy weekend.

I've had this piano since I was fourteen. During my teens I had a very unhappy time at school and music certainly helped me through it. I would rush home to my piano each day, and often played for two hours without even stopping to take my coat off! Then, and only then, did I truly feel that I was safely back home!

For many years the piano was my first instrument - but it now plays second fiddle to my theremins.

The Opening Ceremonies kicked off three musically packed weekends after nearly three years of Covid pandemic related shutdowns. Out 1,500 musicians and gig workers contracted for the scuttled 2021 French Quarter Fest ended up receiving a partial payment anyway. Those payments were funded by a $150,000 donation from Chevron, the French Quarter Festival’s main sponsor.

Acts that were supposed to play in 2020 and 2021 were given "first priority" when this year's French Quarter Festival festival was booked. With a fulltime staff of only eight, the non-profit French Quarter Festivals Inc. manages an event that attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees with an economic impact of more than $100 million and highlights a musical spirit that has become a mainstay at festivals throughout the works

There's a place I dream about

Where the sun never goes out.

And the sky is deep and blue.

Won't you take me there with you.

Ohhh, we can begin again.

Shed our skin, let the sun shine in.

At the edge of the ocean

We can start over again.

There's a world I've always known

Somewhere far away from home.

When I close my eyes I see

All the space and mystery.

Ohhh, we can begin again.

Shed our skin, let the sun shine in.

At the edge of the ocean

We can start over again.

"Edge of the Ocean" - Ivy

In fact, they rarely are - simple that is.. Most often the solutions to our problems are complicated and our decisions murky at best. There really aren't many really big decisions that we make that we don't catch ourselves looking back and wondering - what if... Or if only..

Sometimes it's a choice not of our making - it's having to live with a choice that someone else has made, and we have to learn to let it go.. Knowing that for them one day their sun will set - "and the shadow of the day - will embrace the world in gray"... Cold comfort though - isn't it?

The Shadow of the Day - by Linkin Park

I close both locks below the window

I close both blinds and turn away

Sometimes solutions aren't so simple

Sometimes goodbye's the only way

And the sun will set for you

The sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day

Will embrace the world in grey

And the sun will set for you

In cards and flowers on your window

Your friends all plead for you to stay

Sometimes beginnings aren't so simple

Sometimes good bye's the only way

And the sun will set for you

The sun will set for you

And the shadow of the day

Will embrace the world in grey

Musically Challenged:

You're sorta like

Hearing the birds churping in the morning light

When we're together it feels ideal

The sunny weather puts a smile right on my face

You always bring that first day of spring

musically-enhanced water fountain show

Just looked at the setlist... now I remember. Musically this was probably my favorite lips show I've ever seen. They played all the cool songs from Yoshimi you never hear anymore... symapthy 3000-21, one more robot, in the morning of magicians... they also played lighting strikes the police man complete with strobes and smoke flares and megaphone sirens. Unreal. Breathe closer, followed by what is light > the observer. I am usually not a fan of slow encores... but this was perfect. I'd love to hear a recording from this show. or at least from this tour.

Lawn gnomes rule, especially ones that are musically inclined.

* This is a musically inspired painting from a old revolutionary ballad of the late 60's titled "Clandestino" which I recently encountered on YouTube, beautifully rearranged and brought up to date by Manu, for those wishing to hear this so modern version go to You-tube: "Manu Chao-Clandestino /live/ youtu.be/VU9IWb7To7w

p.s. on a note of interest, Manu Chao is the fifty year old son of "Manu" el rebelde.

The video shows a corner of bloomsbury square as it appears from a window of our flat.

The music is the 2nd Movement of Vaughan William's 'London Symphony'. He wrote that the 2nd movement was meant to evoke 'Bloomsbury Square on a November Afternoon'

So...there you go.

Music is a timeless tradition that warms the hearts of many. While music can be played on virtually everything, for me the sound is perpetuated on a piano. This is why I chose the two to be superimposed! (You can even read the lyrics on the sheet: "Christmas of white..."!)

Two musically gifted women’s lives overlap over the boundaries of time in Rosalyn Story’s novel Sing Her Name. With racism barring her way, a nineteenth century concert artist can never achieve the place in history she deserves. Then, long after her death in poverty and obscurity, a 21st century waitress, talented but musically untaught, has a chance to revive this singer’s name and reach her own success–if her family ties don’t hold her back. Photos made at The Center at Belvedere during the Festival of the Book on 3/23/23.
