CAMP BESTIVAL 2013
Camp Bestival has its niche firmly carved out as the premier child-friendly but musically-credible event on the summer calendar, the festival in Dorset has also managed to retain a boutique ambience whilst having a capacity of some 30,000. That said, when it feels like over half of your crowd are in the five to ten age-bracket, maybe you can squeeze a lot more little bodies into the available space.
And it’s a fact that there are children everywhere. Children in pushchairs, children in custom-pimped trollies, children up flagpoles, children weighed down by stacks of 10p deposit pint cups. There are kids crammed against the fence around the jousting arena, kids making clay models and kids sprouting tails. There’s youngsters learning to dance, being entertained by the blue coats and hanging upside-down from the giant Hi De Hi letters on the hill above the Big Top.
Indeed it almost seems to have been an entry-requirement that you brought a toddler or pre-teen with you to get through the gates.
There were still some people without young families in tow this year – but they were in a considerable minority. Fundamentally, Camp Bestival takes the concept of a festival kids’ zone to the limits and still doesn't leave the ‘adult entertainment’ as an afterthought.

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.
In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.
They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.
In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.
Musically challenged
Nothing ever happens as demonstrated by 9 shots taken once an hour from noon to 8 pm. Shots taken from the garage, I was trying for it not to move at all so I could splice them all together nicely but that didn't quite work...there was obviously a bit of movement but heck if I know how that happened...there was a pedestrian walking by in one of these pictures but she wasn't in the right place in the frame to show up at the appropriate window, don't ask how the freakin' cat managed it...this was my first try at a piece for the musically challenged group. Kinda hoping I'll get better at this as I go along...but it was fun anyway!
Tamara was a musically gifted girl and holder of the Heart Stone. She trained three baby magical animals - Cleo (a unicorn), Sugar (a dragon), and Spike (a panther). In the second season, she got her own zebracorn named Shadowsong.
Emotional outbursts and eruptive climaxes dominate this program both musically and visually. A stormy half hour is to be expected, as a whirlwind of large-scale projections and emotionally intense music whizzes through the Deep Space 8K of the Ars Electronica Center.

These visuals all started out from a single illustration (now the animation Tasty Visuals #001, the first loop of the sequence). Whilst creating the illustration I thought about how each bit might animate and so set about turning it into a short ident type visual. It was soon after that I learnt about the Resolume competiton for Kraak & Smaak a Dutch trio of musicians who create some quality funk/breakbeat/electro tunes. As Kraak & Smaak translates to Crunchy & Tasty I thought it'd be too good an opportunity to miss to get a set of food-themed illustrations turned into VJ loops.
The original 3 loops won the competition and the prize was a commission to make 20 more loops plus a copy of the VJ software Resolume. This video shows

3 for the competition and 14 others that are built up in a similar way. The final 6 are transitions/backgrounds that can be played over the top or underneath all of these clips to give extra variation.
Before animating any of the parts I chose 3 of Kraak & Smaak's tracks and sliced it so that it was a segment of 16 beats. I then altered the tempo of the segment to 125BPM - as this works well with a 50fps frame rate (and is consequently easily scalable for slower or faster sections should I need to re-render to a certain speed). Within these segments there was enough going on musically that I could animate individual objects to sounds, meaning that you can watch them again and again and still find new bits that sync up to something. The beauty of this is that all these elements can be removed as single pieces and reassembled to create new compositions. The limitations of the grid plus no gradients or transparencies also meant that consistency between the pieces was easy and that they could all be played consecutively and gel.
My next step is to separate the elements in these visuals and use them as separate clips over multiple layer in the VJ software Resolume - allowing me to form new compositions live to music!

Artist: Harriet Backer
Throughout Harriet Backer's 50-year career, women's rights changed radically. Being a woman and an artist became accepted. Backer was talented and determined, inspiring a new generation of women and men in the Norwegian art world.
In Backer’s family, art and culture were part of how the children were raised. Her older sister Agathe was musically gifted and wanted to become a pianist. She had to go abroad to learn, and Harriet became her sister's traveling companion. This gave Harriet the opportunity to visit art museums and get to know the historical masters of the art world at a young age. Agathe eventually became a renowned composer and concert pianist, while Harriet became an important artist.
Backer showed an early talent and interest in art, but embarked on full-time studies rather late in life. In 1874, at 29 years, she decided to travel to Munich. The art community in Norway was small, so one had to go abroad.
The art academies in Europe were reserved for men in those days, but women could receive private tuition or attend "women's classes". During her years in Munich, Backer had several teachers. In 1878 she moved to Paris to continue her studies.
Being accepted for exhibition at the Salon in Paris was an important step on the path to becoming a professional artist. In 1880, Backer was accepted with the painting Solitude. Hundreds of artists exhibited at these exhibitions at the same time, and the paintings hung close together, from floor to ceiling. The jury thought Backer's painting was excellent, and she was honoured with a diploma, known as a Mention honorable.
In Munich, Backer learned to paint in a style characterised by a high level of detail and dark colours. We see this for example in Avskjeden (The Farewell), from 1878. When she came to Paris, she was greatly inspired by impressionism. In one of her best-known paintings, Blått interiør (Blue Interior), painted five years after Avskjeden, the transformation of her painting style is evident. Clear and pure colours dominate the composition. From this point on, the interaction between figure, interior and light effects became a theme that permeated Backer's paintings. How to create contrasts between the light indoors and outdoors? How are colours perceived in lamplight compared to daylight? She approached her subjects with these issues in mind.
Backer started her career with a desire to become a portrait painter. She painted many friends and acquaintances, and also received portrait commissions. But it is her interior scenes she has become best known for. She painted interiors from all walks of life – from farmhouses to bourgeois living rooms. For the most part, Backer's rooms are populated by women.

In 1888, Backer established herself in Norway, and from 1892 to 1910 ran a painting school in Kristiania. She became a popular teacher. Her openness to new ideas in both art and social development was appreciated. She sympathised with the women's movement, but did not actively participate in political work.
In the women's cause, Backer was recognised more for what she did than what she said – as a renowned artist she was an important role model. Together with friend and fellow artist Kitty Kielland, she was a pioneer who paved the way for women to have the opportunity to choose art as a career path.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).
The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.
The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.
The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.

Bridget Regan plays pretty much every traditional Irish instrument in Flogging Molly - though mostly she plays the fiddle in most of the songs as you can't hear any of her other instrumentation.
This is her breaking out the tin whistle during one of the band's slower interludes.
This was about the only time I could see her with all of the other motion on the stage.

this guy owns a little store near my favorite coffee shop. he was outside, late afternoon, relaxing on his plastic folding chair, a little over a week ago.
i love talking to strangers. especially ones who look interesting and aren't adverse to having their picture taken. so i smiled and asked him if he minded if i shot some photos. he happily obliged and then proceeded to talk my ear off for the next half hour.
we discussed Brooklyn, mostly the heavy contingent of Polish Jews in Greenpoint. and though i lived right near there for a while and am both half Jewish (my dad is Jewish, my mom Catholic) and sort of Polish (depending on the point in time i'm either half Russian or half Polish. the other half of me is Italian), he still did ninety percent of the talking. so i just kept shooting, happily.
at the end of our time together, he switched subjects somewhat abruptly.
"i should fix you up with my grandson," he said out of nowhere. "now, he's a looker! and only 20 years old!"
and before i could reply, he blurted out with a giant, mischievous smile, "and he hasn't been deflowered yet!!"

some musically decorated cupcakes that went out with a "maroon 5" themed cake. unfortunately i forgot to snap a photo of the cake. oh well...
Every day, I have a song or songs playing the background of my little life, mostly in my head, but certainly on the radio, my iPod, etc. Songs that make me feel strong play the most, and sometimes my mind just ROCKS out wickedly banging its head YAY-uh, Yay-uh, Yay-yay-eee-yay-uh!! I was acting a complete fool to Bohemian Rhapsody in my car on the way home today, and my favorite work out song is A Little Less Conversation – the Elvis vs. JXL mix. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, visually and musically. Some days I see fluffy bunnies, and other days I see lightning bolts against a dark sky filled with flying monkeys! I’ll get you my pretty! LOL
Today was a “Flying Monkeys” kind of a day!

Songs for a Watchful World, Beulah’s Boneyard has been getting some good airplay these past couple of weeks. I’m delighted for Jon Avison and all the talented musicians who worked on this.
There’s a welcome optimism and positivity, as well as a reflective and contemplative nature. The songwriting craft and talented arranging of instrumentation is noted. There’s a pleasing evocation of folk traditions, old English, bluegrass and even Dylan from time to time. There’s even a lyrical lilt and hint of a less ascerbic John Dexter Jones. The natural of the birdsong and pastoral instrumentation is used to good advantage, as is the brass-adorning of closer “The Time of Snow” with its message of collaboration. The message of hope and overcoming is welcome. Calming.

Musically, it straddles folk and Americana, opening with the gently ambling ‘After The Storm’, sharing a melodic kinship with Ian Tyson’s ‘Someday Soon’, a rumination on summer romance that has faded away with the passing seasons but with the faith that a calm will follow. That sense of loss and time passing weaves throughout the album, the chirping of birds introducing the fingerpicked folk-blues ‘The Days’ which captures the stasis of lockdown (“you’ve got to strive for something when there’s nothing you can do”) and, set in the Yorkshire dales, again on the whistle and waltzing ‘The Ones That Got Away’, the wisdom of age reflecting on the restlessness of youth.

In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.
The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.
They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.
In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

I work with Native Americans. What I see and hear is devastating, and now I am numb to it. It takes a lot to surprise me these days. The level of poverty and desperation, the total and complete lack of opportunity, the racism in neighboring towns, the ignorance of the majority...you think inner city ghettos are bad? Try living on an impoverished, isolated reservation!
They don't have much, but they call their reservations home. They are connected to their land (what little they have) in a way that we are not. It is in their blood. It is their heart and home.

Muse - Dig Down
Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboards) and Dominic Howard (drums, percussion).
Muse released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999, showcasing Bellamy's falsetto and a melancholic alternative rock style. Their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), expanded their sound, incorporating wider instrumentation and romantic classical influences, and earned them a reputation for energetic live performances. Absolution (2003) saw further classical influence, with orchestra on tracks such as "Butterflies and Hurricanes", and became the first of five consecutive UK number-one albums. The album has a noticeably darker and heavier tone musically, with a lyrical focus on the theological and apocalyptic concepts.

Throughout Harriet Backer's 50-year career, women's rights changed radically. Being a woman and an artist became accepted. Backer was talented and determined, inspiring a new generation of women and men in the Norwegian art world.
In Backer’s family, art and culture were part of how the children were raised. Her older sister Agathe was musically gifted and wanted to become a pianist. She had to go abroad to learn, and Harriet became her sister's traveling companion. This gave Harriet the opportunity to visit art museums and get to know the historical masters of the art world at a young age. Agathe eventually became a renowned composer and concert pianist, while Harriet became an important artist.
Backer showed an early talent and interest in art, but embarked on full-time studies rather late in life. In 1874, at 29 years, she decided to travel to Munich. The art community in Norway was small, so one had to go abroad.
The art academies in Europe were reserved for men in those days, but women could receive private tuition or attend "women's classes". During her years in Munich, Backer had several teachers. In 1878 she moved to Paris to continue her studies.
Being accepted for exhibition at the Salon in Paris was an important step on the path to becoming a professional artist. In 1880, Backer was accepted with the painting Solitude. Hundreds of artists exhibited at these exhibitions at the same time, and the paintings hung close together, from floor to ceiling. The jury thought Backer's painting was excellent, and she was honoured with a diploma, known as a Mention honorable.
In Munich, Backer learned to paint in a style characterised by a high level of detail and dark colours. We see this for example in Avskjeden (The Farewell), from 1878. When she came to Paris, she was greatly inspired by impressionism. In one of her best-known paintings, Blått interiør (Blue Interior), painted five years after Avskjeden, the transformation of her painting style is evident. Clear and pure colours dominate the composition. From this point on, the interaction between figure, interior and light effects became a theme that permeated Backer's paintings. How to create contrasts between the light indoors and outdoors? How are colours perceived in lamplight compared to daylight? She approached her subjects with these issues in mind.
Backer started her career with a desire to become a portrait painter. She painted many friends and acquaintances, and also received portrait commissions. But it is her interior scenes she has become best known for. She painted interiors from all walks of life – from farmhouses to bourgeois living rooms. For the most part, Backer's rooms are populated by women.

In 1888, Backer established herself in Norway, and from 1892 to 1910 ran a painting school in Kristiania. She became a popular teacher. Her openness to new ideas in both art and social development was appreciated. She sympathised with the women's movement, but did not actively participate in political work.
In the women's cause, Backer was recognised more for what she did than what she said – as a renowned artist she was an important role model. Together with friend and fellow artist Kitty Kielland, she was a pioneer who paved the way for women to have the opportunity to choose art as a career path.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).
The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.
The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.
The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.
