Go or Go Ahead by Rufus Wainwright

I find that Tuesday I have no time for 365, so I tend to make up the photos the next day. Good thing my last day of my 365 falls on a Thursday. :)

I have never felt happier. yesterday I seriously was so happy i could die that day and id die happy.

I never felt so free, so content, just so plain happy. life is falling into place and i feel so carefree.

Two weeks in NOLA for the mardi gras 2017

Founded in 1993, the Krewe of Orpheus takes its name from the musically-inclined son of Zeus and Calliope. Founding members included Harry Connick, both the junior and senior.

In New Orleans, the krewe established themselves as a superkrewe with their first parade in 1994, which rolled with 700 riders. They were the first super Krewe to allow both male and female riders.

The Krewe's throws include a number of popular items including emblem beads, stuffed animals, signature beads, light-up Orpheus medallion beads, cups, three different types of doubloons, and 4-foot-long stuffed dragons.

They have a number of notable floats including the Dolly Trolley, the horse-drawn bus that was used in the opening of Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, the Smoking Mary which is a six unit float that looks like a steam locomotive, a Trojan horse and the Orpheus Leviathan Float, which is a three unit, 139-foot float, and the first Carnival float to use extensive fiber optic lighting.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Fats Domino wass the honorary grand marshall for 2014. His eldest son, Antoine Domino III, rode in the parade and perform his 85 year old father's music.

Another option for the musically talented--at least, for those males so inclined--was the Men's Glee Club. It was directed by Grace Gail Giberson, who was the music teacher at the Eau Claire State Normal School for the first five years of its existence. She was instrumental in beginning the music program and building it up to prominence in the school's academics. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is still benefiting from her contributions.

Portrait of the artist Kitty Kielland (1883)

Artist: Harriet Backer

Throughout Harriet Backer's 50-year career, women's rights changed radically. Being a woman and an artist became accepted. Backer was talented and determined, inspiring a new generation of women and men in the Norwegian art world.

In Backer’s family, art and culture were part of how the children were raised. Her older sister Agathe was musically gifted and wanted to become a pianist. She had to go abroad to learn, and Harriet became her sister's traveling companion. This gave Harriet the opportunity to visit art museums and get to know the historical masters of the art world at a young age. Agathe eventually became a renowned composer and concert pianist, while Harriet became an important artist.

Backer showed an early talent and interest in art, but embarked on full-time studies rather late in life. In 1874, at 29 years, she decided to travel to Munich. The art community in Norway was small, so one had to go abroad.

The art academies in Europe were reserved for men in those days, but women could receive private tuition or attend "women's classes". During her years in Munich, Backer had several teachers. In 1878 she moved to Paris to continue her studies.

Being accepted for exhibition at the Salon in Paris was an important step on the path to becoming a professional artist. In 1880, Backer was accepted with the painting Solitude. Hundreds of artists exhibited at these exhibitions at the same time, and the paintings hung close together, from floor to ceiling. The jury thought Backer's painting was excellent, and she was honoured with a diploma, known as a Mention honorable.

In Munich, Backer learned to paint in a style characterised by a high level of detail and dark colours. We see this for example in Avskjeden (The Farewell), from 1878. When she came to Paris, she was greatly inspired by impressionism. In one of her best-known paintings, Blått interiør (Blue Interior), painted five years after Avskjeden, the transformation of her painting style is evident. Clear and pure colours dominate the composition. From this point on, the interaction between figure, interior and light effects became a theme that permeated Backer's paintings. How to create contrasts between the light indoors and outdoors? How are colours perceived in lamplight compared to daylight? She approached her subjects with these issues in mind.

Backer started her career with a desire to become a portrait painter. She painted many friends and acquaintances, and also received portrait commissions. But it is her interior scenes she has become best known for. She painted interiors from all walks of life – from farmhouses to bourgeois living rooms. For the most part, Backer's rooms are populated by women.

I think I serve the cause of women best by concentrating like a man – Harriet Backer

In 1888, Backer established herself in Norway, and from 1892 to 1910 ran a painting school in Kristiania. She became a popular teacher. Her openness to new ideas in both art and social development was appreciated. She sympathised with the women's movement, but did not actively participate in political work.

In the women's cause, Backer was recognised more for what she did than what she said – as a renowned artist she was an important role model. Together with friend and fellow artist Kitty Kielland, she was a pioneer who paved the way for women to have the opportunity to choose art as a career path.

About Harriet Backer:

Born 21 January 1845 in Holmestrand.

Lived in Paris in 1878–1888.

Started an art school in Kristiania in the 1890s. Backer’s students included Nikolai Astrup, Halfdan Egedius, Harald Sohlberg, Henrik Lund, Helga Ring Reusch, Astri Welhaven and Sara Fabricius (Cora Sandel).

Died 25 March 1932 in Oslo.

Important works:

Solitude (1878–1880)

Blått interiør (Blue Interior) (1883)

På blekevollen (Bleaching) (1886–1887)

Ved lampelys (By Lamplight) (1890)

Barnedåp i Tanum kirke (Baptism at Tanum Church) (1892)

Inngangskoner (Women in Church) (1892)

Interiør fra Uvdal stavkirke (Interior from Uvdal Stave Church) (1909)

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).

The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.

The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.

The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.

Do you take sugar? one lump or two?

Little miss ah innocent sugar me, yeah

for Musically Challenged

oh, look, i'm a pirate. i only had one hoop on. hahaha.

happy monday, hope it's a great day for you guys. :)

I'll probably be around to catch up on your streams.

Rain, rain, go away...

It's been raining for 4 days, for what feels like non-stop. I'm sure that's not very long for some of you in other parts of the nation, but it's more than I care for.

I had originally thought I could sit on that wall, but I couldn't reach it. :( and it was so wet, I was chicken to try and jump up with heels on.

If I never said I'm sorry

it's not 'cause I'm not,

it's just that some words are too big and too hard and they just get caught.

~ It's Not The Liquor I Miss, Luke Doucet

for Musically Challenged

" Desperado , why don't you come to your senses?

You've been out ridin' fences for so long now.

Oh, you're a hard one.

I know that you got your reasons.

These things that are pleasin' you

Will hurt you somehow.

Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy. She'll beat you if she's able.

You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet.

Now it seems to me, some fine things have been laid upon your table,

But you only want the ones that you can't get...

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger.

Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home...

And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'.

Your prison is walking through this world all alone.

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?

The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine.

It's hard to tell the night time from the day.

You're losin' all your highs and lows,

Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?

Come down from your fences, open the gate.

It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you.

You better let somebody love you, before it's too late."

Although our built environment is not necessarily designed to facilitate our personal longings and desires, its spaces certainly enable us to court, fight, make love, get drunk, debate, urinate and walk our way back home from that embarrassing dinner date. Taking his works still (2006) and the Healers (2010) as a starting point, Rotterdam-based artist Tim Leyendekker curates a program that focuses on films that deal with the Western urban landscape as a witness to intimate social interactions and the de/reconstruction of the cinematic narrative.

still by Tim Leyendekker

Netherlands, 1989, 5 minutes, 16mm

Two kids make their first date through a telephone dating line. A piece on desire and memory.

God Provides by Brian M. Cassidy and Melanie Shatzky

USA, 2006, 9 minutes, digital projection

Shot in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and bound by elements of fiction, this documentary short is a glimpse into faith-based sentiment and inexplicable loss in the American South. While a man searches for his kitchen appliances in the bushes, elsewhere a grinning preacher takes souvenir snapshots for his congregation, and a woman with a disability journeys to a quieter place.

the Truth Machine by Simone Bennett

Netherlands, 2007, 10 minutes, digital projection

A short film about a car accident based on an old Persian fable: Truth is a mirror which fell to earth in a million pieces, and each human being picked up a piece, looked at it and saw themselves reflected. And each decided they saw the truth…but not realising that truth is splintered among all people.

Oral Historyby Volko Kamensky

Germany, 2009, 22 minutes, digital projection

A report from the land of the Brothers Grimm: the story of a sleepy German hamlet presented in twenty-two images. The voices of its inhabitants guide the audience through the rural environment, but the impact of the film owes as much to what is concealed as to what is shown and said. The crucial distinction between story and history becomes increasingly flimsy.

a Necessary Music by Beatrice Gibson and Alex Waterman

USA, 2008, 30 minutes, digital projection

Derived from texts by residents of Roosevelt Island, and Bioy Casares, A Necessary Music is a musically conceived science fiction film featuring Robert Ashley. The takes long, languid and beautifully pictorial – in a narration shared between Robert Ashley (perhaps one of the most distinguished voices in contemporary music) and dwellers of Roosevelt Island (a small sliver of land situated between NYC burroughs Manhattan and Queens) - A Necessary Music is a musically conceived science fiction film, exploring the social imaginary of a utopian landscape through directed attention to the voices that inhabit it.

the Healers by Tim Leyendekker

Netherlands, 2010, 10 minutes, digital projection

The Healers is a deconstructive reconstruction of a memory set in early 90’s nightlife. Layers that normally form a cinematographic entity by merging together are stripped bare and served separately in order to provoke the boundaries of the constructed narrative.

66 Scenes from America by Jørgen Leth

Denmark, 1982, 42 minutes, digital projection

As a visual narrative 66 Scenes from America is reminiscent of a pile of postcards from a journey, which indeed is what the film is. It consists of a series of lengthy shots of tableaux nature, each appearing to be a random cross section of American reality, but which in total evoke a highly emblematic picture of the USA. A personal, subjective rendition, full of experiences and sensations, big and small.

Across the Universe--The Beatles

In addition to Fats Domino, Quentin Tarantino reigned as the krewe's celebrity monarch.

The multi-awarded Mandaluyong Childrens Choir under the baton of maestro Sebastian L. Trinidad.

The Mandaluyong Children’s Choir was formed in 1999 as a training program that aims to develop and nurture the musically gifted among the underprivileged in Mandaluyong City, and since then, it has become a spring of hope and pride for the town folks with its talented trove of 8 to 17 year old boys and girls, most of which are sourced from public schools. MCC has drawn a proud list of achievements. Topping the roster is representing the Philippines and winning a silver medal in the Children's Choir Category and a bronze medal in Musica Contemporanea Category in the 2nd World Choir Olympics in

Busan, South Korea. Only Selfless Love, a music video which featured the young choir internationalists, was adjudged Best MTV in the 2002 Catholic Mass Media Awards and later became a finalist at the prestigious 2004 New York Festival. This feat was reprised in 2007, when their MTV, the Power to Unite, again, won the Best MTV award in the 2007 Catholic Mass Media

Awards. Part of their First North American Tour, they became the first Filipino choir to win at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. In 2005, the choir had the chance to represent the Philippines in the 2005 World Children’s Choir Festival in China.

To date, they have independently produced seven albums: Unang Hirit (2000), Angelic Christmas (2000), Angeli Domini (2002), Symphony of Earth Angels (2002), Childhood (2004), Haleluya!: The Asian Soundscape (2005) and Pasko Sa Langit (2005). The Earth Angels had appeared in Concert Seasons of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and have had engagements with

the Manila Symphony Orchestra II and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra.

Specializing in the innovations in Contemporary Choir Music, the MCC continues to research for breakthroughs of Asian composers as well as its Western counterparts. Materials collected and commissioned find its way into the adventurous programming of the choir.

I didn't take my shot yesterday. It was out of sheer laziness. So here's the make-up shot.

after a super down day I was having earlier this week, a friend of mine sent me a link to remind me of the opposite i was feeling. and while it wasn't so much the link, but the 6 words that followed that made me tear up like a MoFo and had me try not to dwell, i couldn't have loved them more for that at that moment. and like the song says, "everything will be fine". it will be. and it is.

today is fab. i am fab.

----------------------------------

Calm down

Deep breaths

And get yourself dressed instead

Of running around

And pulling on your threads

And breaking yourself up

If it's a broken part, replace it

If it's a broken arm, then brace it

If it's a broken heart, then face it

And hold your own

Know your name

And go your own way

Hold your own

Know your name

And go your own way

And everything will be fine

Dear GOD, there is nothing like a challenge AND a protest to make a man peek out of self-imposed exile!!!

By way of elucidation, campers:

In the group, Musically Challenged (list of songs to choose from this week compiled by the owner of my favorite Flickr handle Favourite Waste Of Time ), the talented and marvelously ponytail-ed Red.Dahlia took time away from her new career as creator and illustrator of homoerotic tabloid stories (I assure: thou art better off NOT knowing....) to post an image to the Editors' song "All Sparks"

She then suggested - nay, URGED - group members to copycat the tightly cropped B&W "eyes and above" style of her shot using our respective 50mm lenses - irrespective of whether one was in possession of said lens type. She currently is celebrating our lemmings-like participation by chanting the phrase "Viva la Revolucion" - although what it is we have allegedly found revolting remains abundantly unclear.

All of this seemed so quaint in much the same way as a scene in which Aunt Bea would attempt to be "hep" by doing the young people's moves while chaperoning a dance on some episode of "The Andy Griffith Show". You know: something that brings a smirk to your face in that "what the hell is all of this about?" sort of way.

Then I listened to the song.

Clever that. But for my purposes 100% INFURIATINGLY (Emotions being the Theme Of The Week ....) dead WRONG. I quote from said musical piece's "hook"

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

All sparks will burn out

In the end

Keeping in mind my abiding and indeed abundant affection for BOTH the beloved Dahlia and Favourite Waste, I am nevertheless compelled to opine, "popycock".

Or, more precisely and in the language I use when neither Ma nor the network television cameras are around: BULLSHIT ON TOAST .

It is not my intent to emerge from either my brief Salinger-esque isolation OR this calendar year as a sparkler to be extinguished faster than a pro-affirmative action speech at a Republican fundraiser (love you, too, Mustang Sheila Babe.....)

Cameraphone only - no problem.

Cameraphone lacking a fiddy (as 50mm lenses are identified by the Flickr pros) - no problem.

Posting to a song by a group named after a profession of people who used to assign me some of the dumbest ass stories to cover (It's AUGUST in Miami, and as God as my witness, Paul Kaplan one day walked up to me and said, "Maurice, find out why it's hot outside...") - no problem

High key image from a low-key brother - no hay problema, mis amigos

Buying into the bleak existential outlook painted by thick-accented lads young enough to be my, um, younger cousins - BIG ASS PROBLEM

This is my first time posting to one of the 32,532,826 songs in the group that I have never heard before in my 19 (metric) years on this planet. I have no idea what in the name of Godot this ditty is SUPPOSED to mean. But I am sure loving the fact that it has proven I still believe something that is much more powerful and, NAY, optimistic.

SPECIFICALLY:

The Eternal Flame, MoFos!!

ps. Oh and Dahlia? I used to be cool and had a smaller ponytail to show for it and all. But it fell victim to a half-drunken barber years ago who clipped it off while my attention was diverted to who was winning the craps game in the back room. It never grew back. I've been traumatized ever since. If these blokes want songs that will REALLY move the people, let them write about THAT!!!

pss. Don't nobody challenge me to a GOT-DAYUMM (Ma is still sleeping and the cameras are off), mother flapping (in case there's a hidden microphone somewhere) nuther thing for the next 48 hours. You wouldn't believe the cleansing that has been going on in these here parts. Catch ya'll in 2010.

REALLY.....
