Project: The Magnus Effect Drone*

Group: Daniel Hubbard

A Magnus effect drone will be able to mimic the capabilities of a fixed-wing drone but with a smaller overall size and more lift at low speeds. This technology would provide hobbyists with a drone whose capabilities are between those of a fixed-wing craft and a multirotor. While there are a large variety of drones currently on the market, there are no commercially available drones employing the Magnus effect.

Remember my video "Abandoned Mix Vol. 1"? Remember the derelict remains of the Ferry boat MV Kalakala? I had always thought that it should have had it's own video. Since I am in between video projects It's a good time to catch on the things I wished I could have done. (lol) This is the flight from that day!

First a little background, The Washington State Ferry boat Kalakala has had a very colorful past. It was put into service in the Puget Sound in 1935 and was decommission in 67'. With its art deco looks the people of Seattle have always had this strong draw and emotional attachment to the machine. In it's glory day it wasn't hard to see why. It has been purchased many times with the promise that it would be restored one day.

Late in 2014, I started a new video series that I intend to continue every Fall for the years to come, "Abandoned Mix" which currently has 3 volumes. One of the locations I intended to fly was the once final resting place of the Kalakala in Tacoma Washington. It was sitting there in the Hylebos waterway decaying very sadly when I saw it. I admit I to was immediately drawn to it.

For awhile I had the last aerial video taken of it there until Washington decided to scrap it for good. On January 4th 2015 it was towed and dismantled. It's parts were actually spread across Seattle . Indeed it was an important relic out here in the Pacific Northwest and I guess I'll have to settle for second to the last or so on as more videos arise.

It was a very sketchy FPV. I didn't have a very good launch site and I was far away in the middle of a busy waterway. But then again all my FPV's are not ideal. :)

If your from the Pacific Northwest I hope you enjoy one last look at the Kalakala months before it's demise. If your from anywhere else enjoy the ride and view!

As always thank you for taking the time to watch my video! (Stream in HD if you can)

I spent my 40th birthday with my family on the Gili Islands. Three small islands off the coast of Lombok, a two hour boat ride from Bali where we live. I took my DJI Inspire 1 with me, my time-lapse kit and my Gopro. Looking into the sun on the morning of my 5th decade a poem came to me,...

2015

Imagine you are alone, an ominous decaying building lays before you. Only the howls of the wind and the creaking of doors on rusty hinges swaying back and forth break the silence. Shadows darting about in your peripherals make you question if you are really alone at all. You hear bangs and knocks in the distance. "What was that?", you ask yourself. Then an overwhelming feeling that someone is standing there watching you. Is it just your imagination? The allure of the building is too great to ignore you then move forward to explore....

A month ago I embarked on an epic adventure. To seek out abandoned and forgotten places in Washington State. There was a lot of research involved and I'd like to thank all the photographers on flickr that have posted photos of these places in the past. It really helped me get out to these locations. My video could not have been made without yours! There is just so much to explore it was evident to me that I could not get it all into one video. This will definitely be ongoing.

I decided to start with the most photographed places; The Fischer Flour Mill in Seattle, The decaying ferry boat remains of the MV Kalakala on the Hylebos waterway, the skeletal remains of Meeboer homestead out in the middle of the desert of eastern Washington and the Abandoned Ellensburg Gas Station. I also found a few places on my own!

Not only did I want to take photos in these areas but I wanted to film them from a different perspective and capture their stoic decaying beauty on a grander scale. Also, I included a "haunted farm equipment sequence" just for fun.

I hope you enjoy these places as much as I did.

Oh and Happy Halloween Everyone!

As always thank you for taking the time to watch my video! (Stream in HD if you can!)

An aerial view of the waters just off Williamtown, Victoria captured using a DJI Phantom Vision 2+ UAV.

Visible in the background is HMAS Adelaide, a Canberra class Landing Helicopter Dock, under construction at HMAS Castlemaine. HMAS Adelaide is due to go into service during 2016.

In the foreground is the Anchorage restaurant and marina and a little further back is the Williamtown Yacht Club.

It was time to stop safety testing, take the training wheels off of 8 and fully trust the technology this weekend! Thank goodness because I was getting bored with controlled scenarios! It was worth it though because I know I have a reliable build. As I do with all my builds.

I set out to capture big nature scenes out at Snoqualmie pass as it just got a light dusting of snow. I started out at Lake Kacheleus and flew out over the dense forest of the Gold Creek trail which looked different then just a few weeks ago. Not only was there a bit of snow but I chased a rainbow off in the distance. I then visited a very barren Rattlesnake lake now that winter is settling in and it pleasantly started drizzling during my flight.

I also got a bit of city flying in Seattle and visited Alki beach on the Puget Sound. I noticed a group of harbor seals floating on a buoy tied to a barge far from shore.

As always thank you for taking the time to watch my video!

****Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base (German: "Fliegerhorst Fürstenfeldbruck"; now "Flugplatz Fürstenfeldbruck") is a German Air Force airfield near the town of Fürstenfeldbruck in Bavaria, near Munich, Germany.

Fürstenfeldbruck became famous first as the main training base for the German Luftwaffe during World War II, then as the site of the Munich massacre of nine Israeli athletes and coaches (two were killed earlier) and one German police officer at the 1972 Summer Olympics. It is currently inactive for German Air Force flight operations, but remains the home of the German Air Force Officer Training School.****(Wikipedia)

It seems that after i finished my video over the Snoqualmie falls I just dove into filming another video!

Lolo and I revisited an almost untouched, prehistoric place rightfully called "Ancient Lakes". These lakes are leftover remnants of the floods that swept over eastern Washington during the last ice age some 15,000 years ago!

I've been here before but never when the lakes are almost frozen solid! Here I am zooming across the sky on my way to proximity fly some water falls. It was a epic adventure and the start of a new video!

Info Waldsanatorium:

DIY Quadcopter flight - Multirotor Drone

In my continuing video tour of abandoned Washington state. I found myself filming in some pretty creeptastic places!

This video starts out at the abandoned Preston Saw MiIll where I randomly find a decapitated doll out in the area where the lumber is stored from the rain. See the Pic here flic.kr/p/pzBJQW

Then to the old Mayflower Dairy where I find a few buildings that are decaying on a beautiful foggy morning. Just across the street I find the old homestead which has been sitting empty since 2003. This house had some interesting features and also had a tendency to "stare" back at you. Then onto my favorite place to fly, The abandoned St Edwards Catholic seminary. The sun peaked out during my flight and gave me some pretty epic lighting while I was zipping around in 10 MPH wind gusts.

Coastal reserve near where I live.

The test flight of a new UAV is an exciting time. Trying to make sure that you are operating correctly, making sure that everything works properly, it is good fun. This image was captured during my test flight of a DJI Inspire 1. The aircraft is just off the beach near the Sandridge Life Saving Club in Port Melbourne and is looking north east towards Melbourne CBD.
