A great deal has been done here in the diocese of Miao by the Church, especially by the Fathers of the Vincentian Congregation that was founded in 1904 in Kerala in southern India. There are retreat days, evangelization programs, popular missions, training programs for catechists, a fruitful apostolate and a pastoral outreach that is welcomed far and wide. Even many non-Christians ask the Fathers to pray for their needs. Their vocation also includes the care of the poorest of the poor, for street children, orphans, the homeless, prisoners and the elderly.
Now the Vincentian Fathers want to build a multipurpose hall in the Parish of Tissa which includes nine Catholic villages and a number of non-Christian villages so that they can better support the local population both spiritually and physically. Without a place where people can come together, it is much harder to offer a full range of possible activities.

The World's Only Corn Palace or the Mitchell Corn Palace is a multipurpose auditorium covered with corn/maize. It is a popular tourist attraction.
"Corn Palaces" were popular among Plains communities in the latter 19th century, with ones going up in Sioux City, Gregory, Plankiton, and Creston nearby before Mitchell's. Mitchell's "Corn Belt Exposition" was first built in 1892 to attract people to the area's fertile soil. It was rebuilt again in 1905, then the final time in 1921, achieving its distinct minarets and onion domes in 1937. The palace is made out of concrete, though it is covered in corn. The corn palace has numerous mural designs using the 12 natural colors of cultivated corn. Generally the murals are recreated annually, as corn does not sustain the South Dakota weather very well, and also acts as a sort of giant bird feeder every winter. It costs around $140000 a year to cover the Corn Palace, which is done every winter with a new theme.
Notable incidents include 2004, when it drew criticism for receiving Homeland Security funding, and 2006 when an extreme drought prevented the creation of new murals. The year I visited, 2017, another drought heavily delayed the erection of new murals, so what is visible is the 2016 theme, "Rock of Ages". The 2017 theme is "Weather".

A multipurpose public building in Helper, Utah holds, among other things, a public library. I found the architectural style interesting, particularly the rounded corners and upward swirl of the windows found there, probably following a turned interior staircase. The glossy black statue on the far left is a tribute to the area's mining heritage.
Helper is named for the railroad engines which assisted or "helped" push trains loaded down with coal up the steep slopes to the north and on toward places like Salt Lake City. Helper has always been a gritty working town, although less so these days. Anything apparently went on here during the heydays of mining with a number of local hotels and clubs sporting brothels, the last only closing their doors in the 1970s.
