Gardening, carpentry and turning tools
Augustus Wettin (Saxon Elector from 1526-1586) had a great interest in all kinds of tools, including those related to mining and military needs, cabinet making, agriculture and gardening, some of which he used and even made himself in his own workshop. A fascinating section of the exhibition is devoted to these tools which are not only practical but also elaborately decorated and embellished. Many of these tools would not be out of place in a 21st century gardening shed or workshop, particularly the folding multipurpose tool (pictured right) dating from 1560-70, a remarkable forerunner of today’s pocket knife, with its fourteen small tools on a pivot.
The gardening tools include two iron spades, one of them painted with fruit and flowers on its wooden mounts; dibbles and rakes with turned wood handles; two long-handled clippers with cords for trimming trees and shrubs; and an adze, a tool combining a weeding blade with a little axe for cutting out roots and shoots, the shaft covered with floral bands of bone inlay. Another adze and a brass seeder of 1572, engraved with the initials AA for Augustus and his wife Anna who shared her husband’s passion for gardening, were both known to have been used by Augustus himself.

The Virginia National Guard conducts a formal ground breaking ceremony on the first phase of a multipurpose training facility at Camp Pendleton in Virginia Beach Oct. 24, 2014. The first phase of the facility, which is slated to be completed in early December, will cost an estimated $1.8 million, occupy 1.5 acres and include two 70-feet by 120-feet steel framed tensioned fabric structures and two 180-feet square grids where military units can set up their tactical operations center equipment and conduct battalion, brigade and division-level command post exercises. The facility can also be used as a staging area for Virginia National Guard units preparing for National Guard civil support missions when on state active duty. In addition to use by tenant organizations such as the 203rd RED HORSE Squadron and the Commonwealth ChalleNGe, the new facility can also be used by other Department of Defense and public safety training customers. An Eagle Court of Honor was held at the Villaggio Multipurpose Room Oct. 29 to recognize Anuk Dayaprema’s achievement of the rank of Eagle Scout.
As a member of the Vicenza Boy Scout Troop 295, and while still an eighth-grader Dayaprema worked on a unique Eagle Scout project focused on collecting and distributing an assortment of school and college textbooks to benefit a specific district in Sri Lanka.

Plans to build a multipurpose arena in Lisbon date back to the first discussions of the Expo '98 Master Plan. At the time, the city lacked a versatile facility able to accommodate concerts, congresses and sporting events of big scope. The existing structures, both in Lisbon and in Portugal alike, either had limited capacity (up to 4,000 people), or were difficult to adapt to non-conventional events, such as world class indoor sports competitions. Another shortcoming of existing venues was the lack of technical infrastructure deemed necessary to host modern concerts, musicals and to allow for proper live TV coverage.
The country needed an arena to fill the existing gap between smaller indoor halls, like the Lisbon Coliseum, and open-air stadiums. As a consequence, Portugal would not host games of important indoor sports championships and no major concerts would take place in the country in periods of cold and rainy weather.
The decision to build the Pavilhão Atlântico within the masterplan of Expo 98 allowed the arena to have a catchment area well beyond the city of Lisbon itself. Being a short distance from Gare do Oriente (the most important public transport hub in Portugal) and several major highway interchanges, allows the arena to draw spectators from all over the country.
The building was designed by Portuguese architect Regino Cruz, who is the author of several government and office buildings in Brazil and in Portugal, in association with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).
