Jeanne Helbling was an actress of the French cinema of the 1920s and 1930s, who was extremely active in early French sound film. She was also a Resistance heroine.
Jeanne Helbling was born 28 July 1903 in the village of Thann, near Mulhouse, in the Alsace, annexed by Germany after the French defeat of the Franco-Prussian war. She came from a family of factory workers and vineyard keepers. In 1920, two years after Alsace had become French again, she became an extra in the film Le grillon du foyer (1920) by Jean Manoussi, starring Charles Boyer, after which a small part followed in Julien Duvivier’s Les roquevillards (1922). More substantial parts were in Un bon petit diable (René Leprince 1923) and Survivre (Edouard Chimot 1923). Then she played Madame de Pompadour in Mandrin (1923) by Henri Fescourt, with Romuald Joubé in the title role as the notorious smuggler. In 1924 she acted against Pierre Blanchar in L’arriviste (1924) by André Hugon. All in all she acted in some 30 silent films, among which also La chaussée des géants (Robert Boudrioz/ Jean Durand 1926) with Armand Tallier; Le juif errant (Luitz-Morat 1926) adapted from Eugène Sue, and with André Marnay; Le capitaine Rascasse (1926) by Henri Desfontaines, and with Gabriel Gabrio in the title role; the romantic series released in Spain: El capitán Sansón; and not to forget the avant-garde film by Jean Epstein La glace à trois faces (1927) in which past and present are mingled in an unusual way, and in which Helbling played a naïve working class girl, one of the three women the protagonist meets… and is disappointed with. After this followed a.o. the Molière adaptation La jalousie du Barbouillé (1927) by Alberto Cavalcanti, and Tire au flanc (1928) by Jean Renoir, and with Michel Simon and Catherine Hessling, Renoir’s then wife. In the late 1920s Helbling also went to Berlin to act in William Dieterle’s Das Geheimnis des Abbé X (1927), with himself in the title role, Der Held aller Mädchenträume (Robert Land 1927/1928) with Harry Liedtke, and in Felix Basch’ Mascottchen (1928), with Käthe von Nagy.
Without much difficulty Jeanne Helbling passed on to talking pictures, while doing music-hall as well, such as a 1932 show with Josephine Baker at the Casino de Paris. Paramount France hired her to act at the studios of Joinville-Le-Pont for the French versions of films like Une femme a menti (1929) by Charles de Rochefort, a multilingual shot at the same time in German, Swedish, Italian and Spanish. In the early 1930s Jeanne Helbling also played in American features destined for French audiences, such as L’aviateur (1931) by William A. Seiter and Jean Daumery, with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Buster se marie (1931) by Claude Autant-Lara, with Buster Keaton. Until the outbreak of the Second World War, Helbling would act in some 40 films, many of which comedies and supporting parts. She played for instance Empress Eugenie in Ludwig Berger’s film Les trois valses (1938), starring Yvonne Printemps. Another example is Paix sur le Rhin (1938) by Jean Choux, shot in Helbling’s natal region and dealing with a wine owner family of which two sons fight each other in the First World War. Helbling’s co-actors were Françoise Rosay, Pauline Carton, Michèle Alfa, John Loder, Abel Jacquin and Jim Gérald. The pacifist film, though, soon became unfit for the times. For a long time it was considered destroyed but in the late 20th century it was found and restored again.
During the German occupation in Paris, Helbling joined the resistance under the name of Chantal. She hosted people from the resistance as well as Allies in her apartment in Rue Casimir Pinel in Neuilly. Within the framework of the triple mission Arquebuse-Brumaire-Seahorse , Pierre Brossolette, colonel Passy and Forest Yeo-Thomas organised on 26 mars 1943 an important meeting which led to the creation of the Committee for the Coordination of the resistance movements in Northern France. This effected in the constitutive meeting on 27 May 1943 of the national Council for the Resistance , in 48, rue du Four, in Paris, at René Corbin. Even she was concerned about the Gestapo, Jeanne Helbling managed to get out the Second World War. She was honoured for her work by the state of France, in particular by General de Gaulle, as well as by the United Kingdom, who gave her the Order of the Empire for hosting a.o. the British agent Forest Yeo-Thomas, known as Shelley or The White Rabbit. After the Liberation, Jeanne Helbling only did two more films, Dernier métro (1945) by Maurice de Canonge, and Jeux de femmes (1946) by Maurice Cloche. In 1946 she married an American of French origin, Henri Garin, definitely quitted film acting and moved with him to the United States. Forty years after, Jeanne Helbling died in New-York on 6 August 1985, she just had turned 82.

The MTA, the largest transportation network in North America, has launched a multilingual campaign encouraging its customers to fill out the 2020 Census so they can get counted as the Authority seeks billions of dollars in federal aid.
The 2013 Heineken Cup Final takes place in Dublin this weekend at the Aviva Stadium, an all French clash between Clermont & Toulon.
With a huge influx of French supporters this weekend, Dublin Airport & City Centre will be packed, along with Leinster playingStade Francais Paris in the Amlin Challenge Cup Final at the RDS Final on Friday 17th May.
Dublin Bus Tour AV 116 is seen on the first day ( Wednesday 15th May 2013 ) with a specially developed advertsing wrap for the Heineken Cup.
AV 116 will be on special media duties on Saturday 18th between Dublin Castle & the Aviva Stadium & is expected to stay in this wrap for a few weeks afterwards.

Alexandrians are very good at languages - many leading international interpreters - even today - have an Alexandrian background.
The left side of this store includes the produce department, which also has the multilingual word cloud. If it hadn't already been dubbed "Fresh and Local", I might have taken to referring to it as the Word Clouds interior!

This sign in the southeastern Swiss town of Disentis/Mustér gives a prohibition on crossing the tracks in five languages, three of which are among the four official languages of Switzerland, and two are languages widely used by tourists.
From top to bottom, we have Romansch, German, Italian, English, and Japanese.
Romansch is spoken by somewhere in the vicinity of 50,000 people, mostly in the southeastern Swiss canton of Graubünden. Linguistically a descendant of Latin from the era of imperial Rome, Romansch replaced the primarily Celtic languages of the region in the 5th century AD. Romansch retains some vocabulary from the formerly dominant language, and is also heavily influenced by German vocabulary and syntax.
The town name "Disentis/Mustér" is itself bilingual German/Romansch. The name "Mustér" is the Romansch word for "monastery", and refers to the Benedictine monastery there that was founded in the year 720 AD.

New Orleans (French: La Nouvelle-Orléans) is a consolidated city-parish located along the Mississippi River in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Louisiana. With an estimated population of 393,292 in 2017, it is the most populous city in Louisiana. A major port, New Orleans is considered an economic and commercial hub for the broader Gulf Coast region of the United States.

Concerns about gentrification, new residents buying property in formerly closely knit communities, and displacement of longtime residents have been expressed.
The city and Orleans Parish (French: paroisse d'Orléans) are coterminous. As of 2017, Orleans Parish is the third most-populous parish in Louisiana, behind East Baton Rouge Parish and neighboring Jefferson Parish. The city and parish are bounded by St. Tammany Parish and Lake Pontchartrain to the north, St. Bernard Parish and Lake Borgne to the east, Plaquemines Parish to the south, and Jefferson Parish to the south and west.
The city anchors the larger New Orleans metropolitan area, which had an estimated population of 1,275,762 in 2017. It is the most populous metropolitan area in Louisiana and the 46th-most populated MSA in the United States.

The castle is very interesting in part because the French Historical Monuments Commission has done a great job of producing an excellent multilingual audio guide and explanatory panels, including several that show images of what the place might have looked like when it was a fully functioning castle in the Middle Ages (as depicted here).
There is evidence that the hill on which the castle is situated was occupied as early as 6000 BC, but most of what is there today goes back only to the Middle Ages. The castle was built during the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries as a feudal fortress headed by a family of princes who exercised absolute power over some 79 towns and villages that included most of the populations of Provence, Comtat Venaissin and the Dauphiné, and even parts of northern Italy. This family constituted the House of Baux and maintained its control over this vast region until 1426 when the domain was taken over by the Counts of Provence and then by the French Crown. Interestingly, in 1642, King Louis XIII gave the seigneury of Baux to the Grimaldi Family of the Principality of Monaco whose princes (currently Albert II) still bear the title of Marquis de Baux. There is an exhibit in the town museum that recounts the official visit to the city by Princess Grace of Monaco with her son Albert, Marquis de Baux, only a few months before her death in 1982 in a car accident. It is quite obvious that the town remembers that visit with great fondness and pride.
The castle was destroyed at least twice during its history, once in 1483 under the authority of King Louis XI, and again in 1631 following orders from Cardinal Richelieu, the Prime Minister of Louis XIII. It was rebuilt after the first of these episodes, but not after the second. The result of the second phase of destruction is what we see today although some restoration work has been carried out in recent years.

Students from programs offered at USG and staff from the Priddy Library made "Multilingual Story Time" at the Gaithersburg Book Festival a success! The event was organized by the director of the Priddy Library, Irene Munster.
Student volunteers read stories printed in Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Hindi, Farsi and Korean to young children and their families at the festival.

300 job seekers and 16 companies participated in the 13th Annual Diversity Career organized by Al DIA Newspaper at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. In the opening, Hernán Guaracao --Founder & CEO of Al DIA Newspaper-- gave a warm welcoming to all participants and exhibitors in this important event. Guaracao mentioned that during the past few years the name of this job fair has evolved accordingly to the demographic changes of the Philadelphia community. For instance, this job fair --during the first stage-- started as Latino Career Fair marketing only the Latino community in the region; in the second stage, the job fair was titled Bilingual Career Fair targeting any bilingual candidate in the area; and in the last two years, Diversity Career Fair has been the name to market the diverse and multicultural job force in the Philadelphia area.
The Free Library of Philadelphia, participated --for a second year-- in this important event promoting the “free” career resources –such as resume writing, interview skills, branding and networking workshops-- that the library offers to the community in general. Dressing for success and being confident are just a few important elements to succeed in the job seeking process. The Diversity Career Fair Event contributed to market the multilingual and diverse job force in Philadelphia. Guaracao was very excited that more companies are joining this event to promote job openings in the area.

Dutch postcard. Habé Film. Johan Kaart and Jacques Bijlevelt in the comedy De Vier Mullers, a Dutch version of the Austrian multilingual Alles für die Firma (Rudolf Meinert 1935), both shot at the Schonbrunn studios in Vienna. The film deals with three quarrelsome generations of textile business owners: granddad Philip (Adolf Bouwmeester), dad Max (Bijlevelt) and son Otto (Johannes Heesters). Kaart plays their go-between Jacob Schat.
Johan Kaart jr. (1897-1976) was a star in the Dutch entertainment world. He starred in seven films between 1934 and 1937, and after the war he played in several other Dutch films. He also worked often for radio and tv, but his main stage was the theatre.

This is another fascinating multi-lingual pamphlet I used to scour through as a child to help me talk to our Suffragi, Ahmed and the Italian maid of my cousins - Angela Santarossa from Pordenone!
On the final photo you can actually see that I corrected spelling mistakes in the text.
I am willing to bet that this is a unique pamphlet published in Alexandria by Negrin in 1934 at 5 piastres - are there any more in the world today?

Before the new European Commission can take office the proposed new Commissioners must pass often tough Question and Answer sessions in front of Members of the European Parliament. Each committee questions the person who will be responsible for that dossier on issues ranging from their CV to political views. The last time this happened not all candidates passed muster as MEPs must sign off on them before they can take office.
