Mud Spring

Mount Makiling

Los Banos, Laguna

This site is one of the mud pots on Mount Makiling, an inactive volcano. A mud pot is a type of hot spring that is formed when due to volcanic heat, sulfuric acid breaks down surrounding rocks into clay. The clay mixes with water to form mud that is very hot (80 C), sulfurous (50mg/L), very acidic (2ph) and varying in consistency and color.

I love this shot.

Mud Figures, Mud People and Mud Men (named for the clay from the areas in China they were made), are ceramic Kwanttung figures dating from the 1920's to WWII. The minis, date c. 1905 and depict Chinese elders. Mud figures were produced in Fat Shang (Kwantung province China with the exception of the popular water carrier, which originated in Jiwah, near Hong Kong. The small figures were used in fish tanks, and the larger figures in planters. Very large ones were used as lamp bases. The marking is an impressed mark reading CHINA.

I use my figures in my outdoor gardens against the boulders, rocks and wood to create mini scenes...much like the fairy gardens that are popular today. This figure is approximately 4 inches high.

The fields have changed from white to mud, large puddles over still frozen ground.

After this shot had been taken I had to make quite an effort to release my boots and the tripod from the grasping soil.

I turned the sprinkler on this week for the garden and instead of playing in the water like good little kids they decided to get muddy. Very very muddy. They danced in the mud, participated in mud flinging, applied mud make-up and overall got very very muddy. We took a preliminary hose shower outside, stripped down outside, showered inside and then took a nice soapy bath following the festivities.

Mudpots need to be seen in motion. Check out this 60-second sample of funny bubbles in the Pocket Basin Mud Pots.

Next on the River Group Tour, we'll leave the mud behind and look for clear blue waters.

Note: sometime after I hiked this area legally, the park made the River Group off limits to hikers. It is sad to see interesting areas no longer accessible.
