A reject shot from yesterday when I was playing with pipe cleaners. It felt a bit too contrived all lined up in technicolour but I think it works well in mono. Shot for 7DOS 'Rainbow' theme for the challenging B&W day!

Bit of a two-fer for MonoBokehThursday with a nice selection of bokeh (don't look down tho!)! HMBT

From Wikipedia:

Mono Lake is believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago, dating back to the Long Valley eruption. Sediments located below the ash layer hint that Mono Lake could be a remnant of a larger and older lake that once covered a large part of Nevada and Utah, making it among the oldest lakes in North America.

Mono lake is a terminal lake in a watershed fed from melting runoff with no outlet. Dissolved salts in the runoff thus remain in the lake and raise the pH and the salt concentration.

Mono Lake is in a geologic active area at the north end of the Mono-Inyo Crater volcanic chain of the Long Valley Caldera. The geological activity is caused by faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada, and is associated with the crustal stretching of the Basin and Range Province.

Volcanic activity continues in the Mono Lake vicinity: the most recent eruption occurred 250 years ago at Negit Island in Mono Lake. Panum Crater (on the south shore of the lake) is an excellent example of a combined rhyolite dome and cinder cone.

It was one of those evenings where everyone was guarding their spot at Mono Lake. Certainly not my favorite way to take pictures. This was the comp I was guarding for awhile. Eventually I got bored and wandered away from the crowds. I posted a few shots already of the exploding sky so here's the prequel to those.

Mono lake with snow. Unfortunately all the restaurants were closed and hunger chased us away before the sun set. Also the picture does not do justice to the smell and ickiness of the sulfuric mud that surrounds the lake.

A bit of experimentation with this one, tried a mono conversion for this, as the dramatic clouds certainly stood out for me.

Still very much a novice with this, quite like it.

Bizarre Formen, die irgendwann verschwunden sind... - Mono Lake

An old image I have re-edited in mono

Strange cloud formation during sunset over Mono Lake. it was pretty nice to see the clouds changing second by second.

Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.

The fun at Convict Lake did not end after Sunrise, rather I stayed there for a couple of more hours trying different compositions while enjoying the serenity. That's not completely true, it was no fun trying to take photographs while it's super cold and gloves on.

Being close to Convict Lake, I have planned my next destination to be Mono Lake via Stone Pillars at Lake Crowley. But I made a mistake of taking the wrong route to Stone Pillars and almost ended up stuck with my compact car having trouble climbing a small hillock. After a couple of attempts, I have decided drop off that plan and headed straight to South Tufa area of Mono Lake. It was super windy at the lake and tried all my best to take an interesting photo of Tufas in the lake. I kept on trying despite knowing that I am not going to get what I want. In the meantime, the sky towards the west became all colorful with the sun setting behind the mountains.

I started running frantically to find the best spot to try a composition with mountains in the backdrop. In the process, I forgot to turn off image stabilization and ended up getting some nasty shots. Here is one that turned out to be better in the lot.
