Amadeo Modigliani (1884-1920)

Le Jeune apprenti (1918-1919)

Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris

Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Livorno, Italy. Arriving in Paris in 1906, his demeanour and reputation had changed dramatically. He transformed himself from a dapper academician artist into a sort of prince of vagabonds. His use of drink and drugs intensified from about 1914 onward. Modigliani's behavior stood out even in hs Bohemian surroundings; he carried on frequent affairs, drank heavily, and used absinthe and hashish. While drunk, he would sometimes strip himself naked at social gatherings. He became the epitome of the tragic artist. After years of remission and recurrence, the symptoms of his tuberculosis worsened, signaling that the disease had reached an advanced stage. He died at age 35 in Paris of tubercular meningitis. The day after his death, his common law wife, Jeanne Hébuterne, threw herself out of the fifth-floor apartment window, killing herself and her unborn child.

A college self-portrait. We were supposed to do a painting in the style of our favorite artist. Mine is Modigliani.

(my funny face is because I'm trying to make my chin as pointy as my painting).

GO YOUR OWN WAY

This week I invited five painters over to the studio.

I didn't have to put on make-up or tidy up the space.

These Artists are dead.

No, I'm not morbid. Or into any strange behavior.

Instead, each day before I opened my Art Journal I printed off paintings of the Artist I was inviting into my studio for that day. From there, I would paste their paintings onto my page, while setting my intention to open myself to their influence--to their silent inspiration. I then let my paintbrush guide the way. Last, I would sit back for a few moments and meditate on what I just created. The first words that would come to mind I transcribed as their message to me and wrote it on my page.

I encourage you to invite your favorite Artists into your studio too. See what advice they may offer you!

Fundación Caja Madrid- Thyssen Modigliani Part II

Pupils looked at the art of Modigliani and learnt about how he was heavily influenced by African sculptures.

They went onto create self-portraits in this style and made 'wood effect' frames from papier mache and acrylic paint.

cemitério Pere Lachaise - Paris

Huile sur toile, 65 x 50 cm, 1919, musée des Beaux-Arts, La Chaux-de-Fonds (Suisse).

This is a painting from 1915 by Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani... AND IT SAYS "LOL"! Anachronism right there!

...

if you wanna hear to true story, read on.

Of course Modigliani didn't actually know LOL is. But apparently the dancer model he's portraying has the awesome name of Lola de Valence. And coincidently her beautiful face blocked the 1/4 of her name painted in the background.... Thus the birth of "Madame LOL".
