Moderated by Bill Flaherty, of National Grid, this first-ever “State of the Capital Region” breakfast featured a panel discussion with the presidents of the largest chambers of commerce in the Capital Region: Mark Eagan, president of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber; Linda Hillman, president of the Rensselaer County Chamber; Charles Steiner, president of the Chamber of Schenectady County; and Todd Shimkus, president of the Saratoga County Chamber.

Collectively representing more than 7,000 of the region’s employers, these four Chamber presidents discussed the state of our region’s economy and the ways they are working together collaboratively to expand economic opportunity regionally. They both looked back on the progress our region has made in 2012 as well as ahead to 2013 and beyond to explore other initiatives their organizations will be taking to help local employers succeed, grow and thrive within the Capital Region.

This video is an example of a person performing the landing point designation task in the LIDAR scenario. The vehicle is finishing the pitch up maneuver. Because of the LIDAR malfunction, the scan has significantly more noise than normal. In 20 seconds, the LIDAR scan will appear, along with a warning regarding the sensor.

The LIDAR malfunction results in some craters being missed or areas that are really safe to be marked unsafe. The automation has suggested the top three landing sites based on the LIDAR scan. In this example, the pilot has selected site #1. He presses the corresponding button on the joystick and then presses the fire button. His job is finished, the automation will fly the vehicle to the ground. He is only allowed to designate once.

For training purposes, we provide you some partial feedback during your practice runs. Here is a map of the terrain's overall safeness, one objective you might be considering during landing point designation. Dark green areas are the safest whereas red are the most dangerous.

EUCALYPTUS SIDEKOXYLON A. Cunningham, Red Ironbark.

The red ironbark is a tree of medium to large size. It usually grows erect, with an even trunk, having numerous side branches, especially toward the top. It never grows to a great height. The bark is the hardest and the darkest of the ironbarks, the color usually is a dark red or brown. It is furrowed and cracked and studded with beads of the kino that exudes from it. The whole appearance of the tree, with its rough, dark bark, its silvery narrow leaves, and daintily colored flowers, is quite distinctive, contrasting strongly with the smooth-barked broader leaved species of the genus. The wood is dark red, very hard, and heavy. The leaves are narrow lance-shaped, often curved, and visually have a more or less evident silvery surface. The red ironbark is one of the very useful eucalypts. While the timber is not prized as highly in Australia as that of other ironbarks, it is nevertheless valuable for many purposes. Its principal use is for bridge construction, for railway ties, for girders and large beams in buildings, for joists, for posts, for the hubs, spokes, and shafts of vehicles, and for a great variety of other purposes where strength and durability are required.

The wood weighs 1,904 pounds per cubic yard.

Sawmill Geyser is a frequently-erupting, moderate-sized geyser in the Sawmill Group of Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. Eruptions are usually long-duration and involve discrete splashing bursts every second or so (for example, see: www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3pI3K6CLSY). Sawmill was last seen erupting at the end of January 2017. It has been dormant ever since. Sawmill Geyser's dormancy has been accompanied by changes in other Sawmill Group features - some are also inactive or near-inactive, others have become more active, or are engaging in atypical behavior.

Shown above is Sawmill Geyser in dormancy in summer 2017. The splash pools and runoff channel are dry. A calm pool of relatively cool water is present in the vent area (see nearby pictures in this photostream), with some yellowish-orangish-brownish microbial mats coating parts of the geyserite.

Murray Canyon is an easy to moderate hike south from Andreas Canyon. Foot and equestrian trails lead to beautiful recreational areas among the many palm trees. Lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of the Peninsula Big Horn Sheep (an endangered species), mule deer or other wild animals still roaming the high ground above the canyon. Less visited, Murray Canyon has its own secluded beauty. The endangered Least Bells Vireo bird is known to nest here.

Moderate Thanksgiving Day traffic along I-580 eastbound heading towards Tracy, CA. This was just coming down from the Altamont Pass. We were headed to Stockton, CA to my aunt’s place for our annual family Thanksgiving get-together. Hope you guys enjoyed this special day!

(Thursday late afternoon, November 28, 2013)

The sign at the beginning said it would be a 2.1 km hike with moderate elevation change. I'm not saying it's a mountain, but I am saying someone enjoys understatement.

On the other hand, we were continually amazed at how *nice* all Australian parks are. Even an little known and out of the way hike like this is (technically) wheelchair accessible.
