First Moderate Risk in South

Central Nebraska & North Central Kansas.

A short jaunt down the severe weather risk area that day from Kearney Nebraska. Arrived in Alma Nebraska a tad behind schedule. The storm was already tornado warned and produced a tornado southwest of Alma. Storm was raging and I wasn't in a good place. Had to core punch this storm & headed east via Hwy 136. That's were this collection of images starts.

I was east bound on Hwy 136 that skirts the border of Nebraska / Kansas. This would take me deep into the Moderate Risk for that severe weather day. Instability was visible everywhere out in front of this storm. A Mammatus Cluster with a wall cloud was right in front of me while another supercell was producing tornadoes behind my current location.

Wicked Beautiful Supercell Structure as I got up close & personal. Especially by Franklin Nebraska where I encountered my first Tornado of 2022.

East then north out of Red Cloud Nebraska. The storms were still producing severe weather but was exiting fast out of my range. End this day with a spectacular view of the backside of the storm. A huge mammatus cloud cluster to enjoy as I was heading home!

Moderate Flooding: actually I would hardly call this flooding at all compared to some years in spring. But the little pond won't be there in a few weeks, and the patch will stay dry until next spring.

It was an overcast day but calm enough to yield good refections.

Nest building in August ?

Species: Delichon urbicum.

The house martin is a small bird with glossy blue-black upper parts and pure white under parts. It has a distinctive white rump with a forked tail and, on close inspection, white feathers covering its legs and toes. It spends much of its time on the wing collecting insect prey. The bird's mud nest is usually sited below the eaves of buildings. They are summer migrants and spend their winters in Africa. Although still numerous and widespread, recent moderate declines earn them a place on the Amber List. Info: RSPB.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

Moderate rough water due to winds. Also up on the left, ice formation by the left shoreline. Consider this was 8 days ago, ice formation likely much larger. This is viewed at the end of Long Sault and water St. Lawrence River.

An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!

First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.

We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.

This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.

Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down spectacular.

We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast.

The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.

Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

Kjosarhreppur, Iceland

I traveled to Iceland for a long weekend to capture the aurora. On the third night the clouds finally parted for a glorious display of the Northern Lights. I can only imagine the majesty of a severe electromagnetic storm.

Mount Sopris reflected in Lower Thomas Lake. Located above the town of Carbondale in the Roaring Fork River valley of central Colorado, this is a great destination for a moderate hike. The popular trail gains 1600 feet of elevation over 3.5 miles as it winds through a mix of wildflower filled meadows and forests of its way to the pair of Thomas Lakes.

The Scene

A three image composite - images of which, none were photographed by yours truly. Being that none of the original photographers of these pictures could be positively identified, I am unable to provide individual accreditation or “ownership”. If anyone recognizes or identifies the “owner or owners” of any of the images contained herein, please advise this artist.

The background (from the line of the road and up) is one of the composite images. From the best that I have determined, the yellow ochre Tudor style house on the left was once the home of Charles Cheney, one of the Cheney Brothers who together operated the Cheney Brothers Silk Company.

Note: In that I wanted a expansive foreground for the composition, I found the Charles Cheney house at 79 Hartford Road in Manchester, Connecticut to be an ideal choice. The broad sweep of the Great Lawn looks much the same as during the heyday of the Cheney silk business (about 1860 to 1930). The Cheney family opened the lawn to the public, who came to pick dandelions for cooked greens; to find worms for use as fish-bait; and in winter to ski, sled, and toboggan. Beginning in 1942, the mansions on the Great Lawn were sold to non-Cheney families; and today none are owned by either the Cheneys or their descendants.

The boy dragging the fir (or whatever type of tree) up the yard, across the snow is another element of this artwork.

The striking red Duesenberg and the foreground is yet another element of this composite.

The Car

1932 Duesenberg Model J Phaeton, SJ-463/2480

Formerly part of Al Wiseman's renowned collection, this 1932 Duesenberg Model J, chassis number 2480, engine number J-463, has a remarkably interesting history. A long-wheelbase car, J-463/2480 stretches some 153.5-inches and boasts a highly desirable and elegant dual cowl phaeton bodywork crafted in the style of LeGrande and finished in closely-matched, duo-tone Red with Beige top and interior. Spicing up the allure and history of J-463/2480, and often a common practice with cars such as Duesenberg, J-463/2480 began life with a formal limousine body by Rollston of New York, which was later removed in favor of body number 1946 from J-389/2415, a sportier, long-wheelbase convertible Berline body by Dietrich, Inc. of Detroit. Unfortunately, in 1946, a garage fire destroyed the Dietrich body, leaving only the chassis of J-463/2480 to survive for many years.

The graceful and popular LeGrande-style body was fitted prior to 1985, likely sometime during the 1970’s. It’s thought that during this time also the engine was upgraded with a proper SJ centrifugal supercharger. First offered by Duesenberg in 1932, the supercharger took the massive 420 CI 32 valve DOHC straight eight engine from 265 horsepower to 320 horsepower, and turned a Model, J into the formidable SJ model. At the time, there were very few vehicles on the road able to match the robustness, speed, power, and overall quality of a Duesenberg. Today, Duesenbergs are capable of cruising at highway speeds, and represent an absolute pinnacle in automotive engineering and styling. Sadly, the stock market crash of 1929 took a major toll on manufacturers such as Duesenberg, which closed forever in 1937 having produced just 481 units of automotive art.

btw - We are getting our first snowfall for the season as this image is being uploading. Large puffy flakes of gently falling snow with little or no wind and the temperature is moderate for this time of year. A real "Hallmark Christmas" scene outside my window........... * Update: Turned into a real mess of a snowstorm. It's now 6:15pm and been snowing since about 6 a.m. Now they are predicting the temps are going to fall, turning this wet snow into an treacherous icy mess by tomorrow morning.......... bah, humbug!

Blessings to all my flickr friends around the world, “Peace, Good Health and Harmony”.

Most New Zealand trees seem to keep their leaves in winter. As an island nation the sea moderates severe winters to short spells of cold so trees can survive with leaves on. The golden leaves are mostly imported from elsewhere. Hope you have a good weekend and thanks for visiting our autumn.

The River Forth which flows from the Trossachs in west central Scotland, to the North Sea at Edinburgh, is what I consider my 'own' river. I have wandered its banks since I was a child, exploring every mile of its meandering muddy lengths. My old primary school at Fallin is just out of shot to the right. I have swam in it, fished in it (with moderate success), sailed its lengths and generally delighted in its existence all my life, - it is a very special river. It can be both beautiful and treacherous. On this day back in 2010 however, it was parading its best colours.

3nd Chase of 2017...

Another early April moderate risk day in South Central Nebraska. Which would turn out to a bust. Storm really didn't fire till after sunset.

Waiting for the instability to fire the storms. Was in the right place, just mother nature had other plans. This particular cell was just building and didn't produce anything but some scenic cloudscapes....

Some nice Nebraska Storm Eye Candy to tide me over till the storms that evening.

CP 118 makes it way across the dam in Parry Sound, soon to get back onto the CP at South Parry. This really shouldn't have been at 5pm, but 119 was having issues in Mactier and moderate dispatch/management incompetence had this sitting a while.

Moderate. As described by the inshore forecast. The fifth level in a scale of 10 in the Douglas sea scale devised in the 1920s by Captain H.P. Douglas, who later became vice admiral Sir Percy Douglas and hydrographer of the Royal Navy. Well Captain Douglas Moderate or not I would'nt fancy being out in this medium swell!

Check out this Incredible Nebraska Shelf Cloud. Heading south via Hwy 15. Even after some horrible road construction, and a detour from HELL, my timing was on the spot.

Now in front of this severe warned thunderstorm. Via Hwy 92 West... I had camera in hand and video to stream this event live that afternoon. This supercell was a Photographic Beast!

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.

These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.

Some decent structure out in front of this cell, so you know I what I was doing!
