Snake of small to moderate size, can grow up to 97 cm long, but the average adult is between 60 and 70 cm long. Males of this species are slightly longer than females. The body is thin, the head is well differentiated from the neck and the snout has a round profile seen from the side. Characterized by the emerald green or bluish green color, of variable intensity, bordered by a pair of yellow or cream-colored stripes running along the side and bottom. Newborns and juvenile specimens are light or dark brown, sometimes even reddish, with a yellowish-green tail tip, but always with the visible side stripes. Adults and juveniles can have a series of small transverse, light-colored, stripes well distributed along the back.
This is an arboreal species, but it is usually found on the ground and the base of the trees, frequently in altered secondary forests, and areas that have been altered for agricultural purposes, such as coffee plantations. As many other viper species, the Side-Striped Palm Viper is viviparous.
This species can be found in mountain forests, from Costa Rica to the west of Panama, between 700 and 1950 m of altitude. Since it is an arboreal species commonly found in coffee plantations, the bites usually happen on the hands and arms of agricultural farmers.

First Moderate Risk in South
Central Nebraska & North Central Kansas.
A short jaunt down the severe weather risk area that day from Kearney Nebraska. Arrived in Alma Nebraska a tad behind schedule. The storm was already tornado warned and produced a tornado southwest of Alma. Storm was raging and I wasn't in a good place. Had to core punch this storm & headed east via Hwy 136. That's were this collection of images starts.
I was east bound on Hwy 136 that skirts the border of Nebraska / Kansas. This would take me deep into the Moderate Risk for that severe weather day. Instability was visible everywhere out in front of this storm. A Mammatus Cluster with a wall cloud was right in front of me while another supercell was producing tornadoes behind my current location.
Wicked Beautiful Supercell Structure as I got up close & personal. Especially by Franklin Nebraska where I encountered my first Tornado of 2022.
East then north out of Red Cloud Nebraska. The storms were still producing severe weather but was exiting fast out of my range. End this day with a spectacular view of the backside of the storm. A huge mammatus cloud cluster to enjoy as I was heading home!

Moderate cloud cover provided decent condition for shooting the falls today . I had hoped the setting sun would cast some nice color into the falls. As luck would have it, the clouds all vaporized just as the sun set.
Happy Waterfall Wednesday!!!

As the northern hemisphere experiences the heat of summer, ice moves and melts in the Arctic waters and the far northern lands surrounding it. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of sea ice off Greenland on July 16, 2015.
Large chunks of melting sea ice can be seen in the sea ice off the coast, and to the south spirals of ice have been shaped by the winds and currents that move across the Greenland Sea. Along the Greenland coast, cold, fresh melt water from the glaciers flows out to the sea, as do newly calved icebergs. Frigid air from interior Greenland pushes the ice away from the shoreline, and the mixing of cold water and air allows some sea ice to be sustained even at the height of summer.
According to observations from satellites, 2015 is on track to be another low year for arctic summer sea ice cover. The past ten years have included nine of the lowest ice extents on record. The annual minimum typically occurs in late August or early September. The amount of Arctic sea ice cover has been dropping as global temperatures rise. The Arctic is two to three times more sensitive to temperature changes as the Earth as a whole.

We've barely had any snow just yet, but tonight with temps at a relatively mild -1C, some moderately interesting flakes were falling. I found these two stacked flakes on the railing of the front stairs. Must have stuck together while falling...?

Maybe this is Port Arthur, Texas. Maybe it is not. It doesn't really matter, does it? Everyone leaves as soon as they can -- unless their dealer is a friend. Then you might stay. The old house used to belong to grandma -- who drank a lot after grandpa left her. It has been a long time. Time is like that. It drags when everyone and everything is dying. www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/texas/article...

Another Moderate Risk day... but I'm the one taking the risk as I started my day in west central Kansas. Though just my luck all the action was in my backyard in south central Nebraska that afternoon. I should have stayed local...
Storm development was spotty at best, and the first storm was the best of the day, though I did get into some action once back into southwest Nebraska... I wasn't disappointed...

Another disappointing day when the storms did fire this day... they were not as predicted. Weak HP cells where just shoot rain at us all afternoon.
We got as close as we could to the only severe storm that afternoon. It didn't last long and wasn't that photographically defined but I'll take what I can get.

This panorama shows the extent of a large thunderstorm cell that moved through Cheyenne, Wyoming during the late afternoon. A lot of lightning was generated with this storm. One in 5 in-cloud resulted in one cloud to ground discharge. The occurrence of this late season storm was highly unusual.

Another early April moderate risk day in South Central Nebraska. Which would turn out to a bust. Storm really didn't fire till after sunset.
Waiting for the instability to fire the storms. Was in the right place, just mother nature had other plans. This particular cell was just building and didn't produce anything but some scenic cloudscapes....

A moderate snowfall on the Central tablelands of NSW in Australia overnight and into the morning of August 2nd 2010. This photograph is taken in the Mount Trickett area near Oberon. This is the best snowfall and accumulation I have personally seen on the Tablelands.
For those who are interested in snow in the NSW Central tablelands, you can see the reported falls in history, as well as some great historic photos (including this one from the 2nd August 2010 fall) at the following link:

Moderate flood on Town Creek @ LBJ National Historical Park and Settlement. Floodwaters top the culvert and bridge at the entrance to LBJ NHP's Settlement. The torrent at the base of the falls represents dangerous current and powerful water coursing through the riparian flood plain of Town Creek overfilling the banks of the stream. Gives visual proof of dictum 'Turn around, don't drown.' You can see the rationale for the 'No Parking' sign.
This particular rain was on the order of four inches. This was not a flood of destructive proportions.

Frigid air blowing from Eastern Russia created dramatic cloud formations over the Sea of Okhotsk in late November, 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the stunning scene on November 25.
Snow covers the land of Eastern Russia in the west of this image, with a large bank of cloud overlying the land in the northwest. Long parallel rows of cumulus clouds blow off the snow-covered area and over the blue waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. These rows of cloud, known as “cloud streets” form as cold, dry air from the land blows across relatively warmer, much moister ocean water and create cylinders of spinning air. Where the air is rising, small clouds form. Where the air is descending, the skies are clear. The cloud streets align along the direction of the wind movement.

I love to watch the weather above and the play of light on Piz Aul. The mountain is of moderate hight (3121m) and is sandwiched between Vals and Vrin in the Canton of Graubünden/Grisons.
This view is from Falera, looking in SSW direction.
These streets appear far whiter and whole lot more fluffy than their land-bound cousins. So-called “cloud streets” feature trailing parallel bands of water vapor.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image of cloud streets over the Barents Sea and Mezhdusharsky Island on March 7, 2017. Such formations occur frequently in the region in late winter.
Cloud streets form when moisture rises from warmer water (compared to the air just above) in columns of heated air called thermals. These thermals rise until they are trapped under a layer of warmer air in a process called temperature inversion. This makes cylinders of rotating air that cool and condense into cumulus clouds. Prevailing winds comb these clouds into the street patterns. The clear parts between the clouds consist of drier, sinking air.
“What happens is that very cold and dry air from above the sea ice is transported out over the open ocean. We call such events cold air outbreaks,” said Erik Kolstad, a researcher at Uni Research and the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research in Norway. “Cold air outbreaks are interesting because they are hotbeds of extreme weather.”

Mount Agung continues to erupt, ejecting a volcanic plume of gas and ash over the Indonesian island of Bali. The ash is visible amidst midday clouds in this false-color image, acquired on November 29, 2017, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite. The image uses a combination of shortwave infrared light and natural color, making it easier to differentiate between ash, clouds, and forest.
The plume appears to rise from two vents in the volcano's crater. Just as the plume's sulfur dioxide levels can vary, so too can the amount of steam and ash. A whiter plume indicates the presence of more steam, while a darker plume indicates more ash. Volcanic steam, lava, and ash tend to have local and regional effects, while gas emissions can sometimes have global consequences.
