Air Weapons Range

On November 1, 2016, NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over Indonesia, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board to capture a stunning true-color image of oceanic nonlinear internal solitary waves from the Lombok Strait.

A bank of clouds covers East Java along the western edge of the image, with a bright sun overhead casting shadows from the clouds along the ocean surface. Away from the clouds, the ocean surface appears a bright silver due to “sunglint”, an optical effect caused by the mirror-like reflection of sunlight off the water surface directly back at the satellite sensor. Although sunglint washes out many features, it also reveals details about the water surface that are usually hidden from view. In this case, sunglint exposes the waves created by the movement of currents in the ocean water.

Internal waves are generated when the interface between layers is disturbed, such as when tidal flow passes over rough ocean floors, ridges, or other obstacles. The Lombok Strait, which is a relatively narrow passageway between Bali (west) and Lombok (east), allows flow of water from the Pacific Ocean into the Indian Ocean. The bottom of the strait is complex and rough, consisting of two main channels, one shallow and one deep. Because of the variation in water movement due to the complexity of the channels and ocean interface, the tides in the strait have a complex rhythm but tend to combine about every 14 days to create an exceptionally strong tidal flow. It is the combination of rough topography, strong tidal currents, and stratified water from the ocean exchange that makes the Lombok Strait famous for generation of intensive internal waves.

After a moderate snowfall, the landscape is completely refreshed. Snow covers most things such as trees and hills, mostly on branches and on the side of the trunk that faced the wind. On these shrubs the snow settles into the crooks, waiting for a thaw, or more snow.

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.

These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.

Some decent structure out in front of this cell, so you know I what I was doing!

Didn't have that much luck that day... though on my way back into southwest Nebraska. I got alongside another developing cell. It was loosing steam but sure was photogenic.

Nice defined outflow boundary, and she did remain severe for about 40 mins then everything just went HP (High Precip) and nothing to chase. Everything started to develop to my northwest and it was out of range. No way was I going to catch up with those new storm cells.

Nothing bad about a bust storm chasing day. There will always be another... In the end.. It was a good chase day.

A beautiful perennial plant, a moderate spreader that does very well in a mostly shady spot in one of our gardens…

While many innocent Ukrainians loose their lives because against the facist russian regime, life seems to continue like normal in Russia. Although, more or less like normal. 6 times a week russian rail operator RZD runs a train between Moscow and their exclave Kaliningrad. Although these trains are seen as a domestic train, normal russians can't take it without a permit. Because the train crosses Lithuania between Belarus and Kaliningrad, and the russians see this country as the enemy. But then again, did they are treat the Lithuanian people as their friend and ally?

During a moderate winter's day, train 030Ч from Kaliningrad to Moscow ran quite a bit late. As the Lituanian railways are responsible for hauling this train within their own borders, one of their modern ER20 loco's was in front of the train. With about 13 hours delay ER20-004, one of their recently repainted loo's, ran the train from Kybertai to Kena.

A moderate snow fall has carpets Bordesley on a cold January day. Huffing up the incline from Birmingham Moor Street is a class 116 dmu, it was working the 13.10 Moor Street to Shirley servics. To the right is Bordesley cattle station with a neat GWR building and a platform on which to unload the unhappy beasts, the traffic was one way for the animals. Occasionally an animal would make a break for freedom, down the slope and out onto Coventry Road, sadly that was the direction of the abattior and they usually soon rejoined the rest of the herd.

Another disappointing day when the storms did fire this day... they were not as predicted. Weak HP cells where just shoot rain at us all afternoon.

We got as close as we could to the only severe storm that afternoon. It didn't last long and wasn't that photographically defined but I'll take what I can get.

Sharky Beach (NSW 359) lies right beside Lawrence Hargraves Drive, Wollongong with a car park at the northern end just off the drive. The beach is 450 m long with substantial rock platforms at each end and a reef off the northern half of the beach. Larger waves break on the reef, reform and surge up the steep beach face with a strong permanent rip running out the centre of the beach. The northern reef at Sharky, called Sharkies, can produce good lefts and rights under low to moderate swell. Swimming is not recommended at this beach. This beach is UNPATROLLED. The closest PATROLLED beach to the north is Coledale beach which is approx 1km. 49748

A view looking to the east while on a moderate level, guided hike in Denali National Park around the North Face Lodge area. What I was wanting to capture with this image was the valley view from this rise between two mountainsides with Moose Creek by in the center. Even though overcast with mostly cloudy skies, there were a multitude of colors present across the tundra. Also because of the overcast skies, I decided to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to capture more of that sweeping view from this rise and then across the valley with the mountains all around. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLabs 3 that I’d recently purchased after moving away from Capture NX2.

Thank you so much for choosing my photo as your cover. Check out this awesome group here: www.flickr.com/groups/medusa_eve_snakes/

is a moderate-sized group of fairly cryptic saturniid moths from South America, famous not for the adults, but for their highly venomous caterpillars, which are responsible for a few deaths each year, especially in southern Brazil, and the subject of hundreds of published medical studies. They are commonly known as Giant Silkworm Moth, a name also used for a wide range of other Saturniid moths.

A typical envenomation incident involves a person unknowingly leaning against, placing their hand on, or rubbing their arm against a group of these caterpillars that are gathered on the trunk of a tree. The effects of a dose from multiple caterpillars can be dramatic and severe, including massive internal hemorrhaging, renal failure, and hemolysis. The resulting medical syndrome is sometimes called Lonomiasis.

On February 4, 2014 the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured a true-color image of sea ice off of western Alaska.

In this true-color image, the snow and ice covered land appears bright white while the floating sea ice appears a duller grayish-white. Snow over the land is drier, and reflects more light back to the instrument, accounting for the very bright color. Ice overlying oceans contains more water, and increasing water decreases reflectivity of ice, resulting in duller colors. Thinner ice is also duller. The ocean waters are tinted with green, likely due to a combination of sediment and phytoplankton.

Alaska lies to the east in this image, and Russia to the west. The Bering Strait, covered with ice, lies between to two. South of the Bering Strait, the waters are known as the Bering Sea. To the north lies the Chukchi Sea. The bright white island south of the Bering Strait is St. Lawrence Island. Home to just over 1200 people, the windswept island belongs to the United States, but sits closer to Russia than to Alaska. To the southeast of the island a dark area, loosely covered with floating sea ice, marks a persistent polynya – an area of open water surrounded by more frozen sea ice. Due to the prevailing winds, which blow the sea ice away from the coast in this location, the area rarely completely freezes.

The ice-covered areas in this image, as well as the Beaufort Sea, to the north, are critical areas for the survival of the ringed seal, a threatened species. The seals use the sea ice, including ice caves, to rear their young, and use the free-floating sea ice for molting, raising the young and breeding. In December 2014, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) proposed that much of this region be set aside as critical, protected habitat for the ringed seal.

When nature reclaims a waterfall...It happens...This moderate sized waterfall is named Crane Falls...It's the last waterfall on Crane Creek at the southeastern end of the Winding Stairs Trail. There are campsites nearby and the creek flows under Tamassee Creek Rd at a picturesque setting into Lake Cherokee. From the road, a short hike on a trail up the creek on river-right brings you to a creek crossing where the trail continues across...The trail continues to the waterfall in about the same condition as you see here...Years ago, this waterfall was beautiful, however the trail and the falls have been forgotten by the forestry department. The 3.5 mile Winding Stairs Trail is still a popular hiking trail and as beautiful as you'll find anywhere, and so are the campsites. Above this waterfall, Crane Creek rises over a thousand feet in elevation through six additional cascading waterways: 2) The Cascades, 3) Secret Falls, 4) Deep Secret Falls (aka Crane Creek Falls); 5) Deep Dark Secret Falls (aka Yellow Jacket Falls), 6) Prospector Falls, 7) Deadfall Falls. Secret Falls drops some 80 plus feet and is situated in the narrow confines of the gorge in a barely visible location. The best time of year to see the full expanse of it is during Winter. The next three waterfalls, 4, 5, & 6 listed above are spectacular....beyond comprehension, ~but to get to these involves a dangerous steep, bushwhack down about 200 plus feet on the sloping ridgelines back and forth across the creek in the gorge. There are no trails. My friend Harmon and I are planning to hike to these early next Spring when the water is high. But back to Crane Falls...I love this creek, the gorge and the Winding Stairs Trail. I've driven the gravel forest road Tamassee Creek Road three times this year. I've hiked the Winding Stairs Trail 3 times and been to Secret Falls and another waterfall Miuka Falls on the other side of the trail. I'm hoping the DNR will clean up this waterfall and the trail leading to it. If not, I may show up with a few of my buddies with our chainsaws, grappling hooks and chains and take a couple of days to clean this up.
