Curtis Falls, Mount Tamborine
Curtis Falls, Joalah section is a 1.5km return moderate grade walking track. Joalah is an Aboriginal word meaning "haunt of the lyrebird". The loud calls of the male Albert's lyrebird can be heard during winter. The track starts from the Dapsang Drive carpark. It is also possible to start at the shops on Eagle Heights Road, adding an extra 800m return to the walk.
On this track you will walk through rainforest and descend steep stairs to a large pool at the base of Curtis Falls. There is an impressive view of the falls and surrounding columnar basalt rockface. Swimming is prohibited at the falls. A restricted access area below Curtis Falls protects an important glow-worm colony. The track continues from the falls, along a piccabeen palm-fringed creek to a giant strangler fig. Beyond this strangler fig, the lower Joalah track is closed for your safety due to rockfalls.

Dr. Michael Bröning has presented his book and moderated the discussion, The Politics of Change in Palestine: State-Building and Non-Violent Resistance.
“The Politics of Change in Palestine” discusses these changes. The book contradicts the prevalent myth that incompetent, corrupt, and uncompromising Palestinian decision-makers are responsible for the lasting stalemate in the Middle-East Peace Process. The book highlights recent political developments in Palestine that fundamentally redefine important parameters of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These include the re-invention of Hamas, reforms within the Fatah movement, state-building efforts of the Palestinian Authority and the surge of non-violent resistance.

Plug into Safety: Don’t Be Shocked By What You Will Learn! is the theme for this year’s Safety Awareness Campaign (SAC) at NASA Goddard. The theme served as a reminder that everyone uses electricity and becoming complacent can lead to some serious consequences. This year’s SAC provides an opportunity for employees to learn strategies to incorporate safety principles while performing daily tasks at work and at home.
In addition to “Electrical Safety” there was a wide variety of safety and health activities and training courses offered to enhance knowledge and awareness of workplace and personal safety. The campaign included Directorate Safety Stand-Down sessions where employees will received information about Goddard’s safety programs and information specific to each Directorate’s safety plans and procedures.

Moderate waves today but ....
A place Where I would hang, during my adolescence. Secluded and devoid of summer tourism due to the formidable waves that exist here, and no where else along the coast. Most of the times I was here with a new "beau".
When I was very young, my uncle was the lighthouse keeper. I would ask to go to the roof and watch the waves. They were so unpredictable. You would watch mid size waves, then out from the ocean would come a massive awe inspiring monster that would make such a thunderous crash.
Fast forward to today... videographers, photographers. Surfers and tourists. All due to Garrett MacNamara and his surfing of a monstrous wave here a few years back.

Took a moderate amount of will-power to go out and grab these, fairly dismal shots, due to the absolute deluge we were getting here yesterday (Wednesday, 28th), all day. Seeing any traction at all on the Stocksbridge branch, other than the nightly workings from Aldwarke, 6J57 to Stocksbridge Works and the return, 6J58, warrants effort to see wha6t it is. This one was a bit of an unknown, a class 6, working number unknown as well coming south from York Thrall Europa straight here through Swinton and Rotherham Central and on tot Woodburn Junction on the GC line, thence up the remaining spur of the old (now defunct) electrified Woodhead line to the steel works at Stocksbridge. The return trip went via Sheffield where the set stood for almost 4 hours before making its way back via Barnsley & Church Fenton back to York. HAve to say it didn't actually look as if it was doing anything. Its designated as an MPV, Multi-Purpose Vehicle, with master & slave units, undertaking general maintenance work such as sandite, weedkiller and other cleaning purposes. The ensemble seen here are led by master unit DR98955 and is coming along the last stretch of the Stocksbridge line at Oughtibridge. It is seen passing the old Oughtibridge station in the top picture and as can be seen in all four pictures here, is completely surrounded by burgeoning vegetation making even moderate side-on shots particularly difficult. In addition, it was throwing it down with rain and the 'gloaming' light was such that the ISO speed was up between 2000 and 3200 to permit taking any pictures at all; in all the frames there has been sharpening and Luminance noise reduction applied in order to get anything reasonable at all. The working was, thankfully, ten minutes early here as it came smartly up to rising grade, the grade which caused so much hassle for the electrified lines when this place had 1500 tonne coal and other freight trains going up the grade at the rate of about 6 an hour, 24 hours a day, just about and 365 days a year... and this wasn't the difficult part of the line, that was to come.

A moderate 2.5 mile (one way) hike to the interiors of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park along the Government Peak trail that starts off of M-107 (i.e., 107th Engineers Memorial Highway) is punctuated with several long n' narrow footbridges across swampy areas and some short n' wide bridges across creeks.
At about the 1.4 mile mark, the trail makes its way to the top of a gorge and for the next mile or so, lines alongside the Carp River. Several roaring rapids later, the Govt. Peak Trail leads to an unmarked, yet easily identifiable Trap Falls.
The trail in part was very slippery, washed out, had snow and fallen trees, but for the most part is shaded by hemlocks, pines & hardwoods and lined up with a plethora of wild flowers making it a very scenic and enjoyable hike.
Thanks be to dear friend, Eric Hackney for the directions.

Guadua is a Neotropics genus of thorny clumping bamboo, ranging from moderate to very large species. Physically, Guadua angustifolia is noted for being the largest Neotropics bamboo. The genus is similar to Bambusa and is sometimes included in Bambusa.
The genus is concentrated in the Amazon basin and the Orinoco basin. It usually grows at low altitudes (below 1,500 m), but has been found up to 2,500 m. Its habitats include lowland tropical and lower-montane forest, savannas, Cerrados, gallery forest, and disturbed inter-Andean valley vegetation.
From a utilitarian perspective, Guadua is the most important American bamboo. Due to its quality, the genus has been widely used for house construction along the inter-Andean rivers of Colombia and in coastal Ecuador.
Guadua angustifolia Kunth, endemic to Latin America, is slowly becoming well-known once again as a greatly desirable building material. Highly appreciated by the Liberator Simon Bolivar for its watershed protection and praised by Alexander von Humboldt for its wide variety of uses, it is being utilized in construction today by both the rich and the poor of South America.
Sadly, most of the huge tropical rain forests and their biodiversity has vanished, and millions of hectares have been transformed into pastures and cropland. It is only now, due to technical studies and research, that bamboo's superior mechanical properties have increased the importance of this "vegetable steel." While bamboo culms used for building can be harvested in natural forests, over- exploitation leads rapidly to the depletion of natural resources. For large-scale use of Guadua angustifolia, the management of sustainable bamboo forests and groves, as well as the establishment of new nurseries and plantations, is a priority.
Tropical bamboo can be propagated easily with cuttings or by covering complete culms with soil. The next year, new plants will sprout. Or, Guadua can be propagated more rapidly by the so-called chusquin method. Under this method, culms are cut at ground level when harvesting causing many small delicate shoots and new plants to grow around the original plant. This is a suitable method for large-scale forests or for farm cooperatives. Since bamboo is a grass, harvesting it down to the soil induces more new shoots to emerge, just like turf grass. This is a phenomenon not known in tropical hardwood forests.
